Jake - Welcome to the list.  Don't give up on a web search.
There are businesses which will inspect a car for you.  Also there are list
members thru out the country who may be able to look at a car for you.

Finally there are kits ( www.vintageair.com ) to add air to
chevelles which are reasonably priced.  Good luck in your quest.  BTW

2002-05-19 Thread Mark Weber

Mike,

One thing it could be is your secondaries are opening up too soon and
flooding the engine. If you just floor the engine without the brake is
there any hesitation while it spins up?

I once loosened the spring tension on my quadrajet so the secondaries opened
up very early. The car engine stalled when I floored it. Too much gas.

My Chevelle used to act like yours is when I did brake stands to smoke the
tires. It would start off spinning the rear wheels with part throttle and
when I floored it it bogged down but eventually overcame it and the rpm's
increased. I never considered it a problem and never tried to figure it
out. Back then my car ran pretty strong when I floored it without the
brake, probably yours is the same.

It gets to a point where you are working against the brakes, where the drive
shaft cannot turn. If the drive shaft is not turning the trans output is
not turning, yet the engine is spinning. The convert is letting that
happen. When you get to a point where the converter says "no-more slipping
allowed", the engine cannot spin faster anymore as everything is pent up by
the brake being held. As you continue to push the gas perhaps the engine
gets into a flooding situation?

If your goal is to light up the back tires into a cloud, put a line lock in.
If you want this for racing, only push the engine to the stall speed and
don't floor it until you let off the brake. If you need to rev the engine
higher for launch, get a higher stall converter.

This may or may not be the case. Any other ideas?

Car trouble?

the engine is a 350 bored 20 over with a 650 carb, proformer intake, MSD
Ignition and 8.8 wires, and a mild cam

the tranny is a 350 turbo with a shift kit

here is the problem I am having, i have a 2000 high stall convertor. when I
step on to the brake and push the gas it will stall to 2000 but when i push
the gas more it will bog down? Then if I do this and let go of the brake it
will start off slow then pick up speed? what could be the problem. It
doesn't sound like the convertor is slipping it sounds like the engine is?

If bled on the car, the master cylinder instructions said to jack the back
of the car up so the master cylinder is level. Or just do it on the bench
where it is level.

You put the master in a vice, put fluid in the master
keeping it level, put pressure on the piston using a
dowl rod or screwdriver, and crack the bleeder while
keeping pressure on, until you get nothing but fluid,
no air bubbles, this makes sure air does not get
trapped in the master, then install master on car,
than bleed brakes starting at right rear, left rear,
right front, left front, always work from the farthast
distance from master to it, but my point is you still
have to bleed the brake system after bench bleeding
the master.

Is it a stock 454 from a given year? If not, what type of mods have
been done? The usual approach is to start with the factory recommendation
and work colder

Tim,

Have you checked into Glasstek hoods?  I've had mine on my 67
for over two years now and haven't had any problems at all with it.  It
didn't take my bodyman very much time at all to prep and paint it.  Fit
isn't as good as a stock hood but it's better than many I have seen.  A lot
of folks on the Team Chevelle web site use them and, in comparison, are the best
they've seen.  Glasstek doesn't have a web site but their phone number is
630-978-9897 and they're based out of the Chicago area.  They are the only
company that made the 4" rise hood I needed but they will custom make any
size scoop you desire.  Check any of the links in my signature line or go
straight to http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/chevelle/the_body.htm for
a before and after comparison.

According to my MSA-1 guide 186s were used '68-72 and had either 1.94/1.5
or 2.02/1.6 valves with a 63.3cc chamber.  Definitely on the factory
hi-po sheet, but it doesn't help ID the engine as they were used on
302s, 327s, and 350s.  Best I can do is say he has a large-journal
engine with 4" bores.  ;^)  The block casting number (rear of block) and
engine ID code from the small pad just forward of the passenger cylinder
head are needed.
