Guys,

Just wanted to thank all of you who responded to my questions. After about 8
hours of swearing and sweating today, I finally got my sister's Monte Carlo to run. I
had to replace the solenoid again. Turns out they gave me the wrong kind the first
time around. I also replaced the aging neutral safety switch and updated the horn
relay which was falling apart. Turns out the initial problem was caused by the wire
going from the positive cable to the junction block on the front radiator support. It
got pinched between the new radiator and battery, causing a short. I also pulled out
the engine harness and rehabbed the entire harness. Now that her car is running again,
it is time for me to start welding the new floor pans into my 70 chevelle, then my new
trunk floor. I guess you never really get done with your projects!

And the reason you're asking a Chevelle list is...? ;^)

Look about 1/2" from the front cover on the passenger side of the block
face, below the radiator hose. You'll most likely need a solvent-soaked
rag and maybe even a brass-bristled brush to clean the block enough to
see the number, but it's there. It should be 9 characters long. The VIN
will not be on the cowl tag but it should be on either the door jamb tag
or the tag that's seen at the edge of the dashboard when you look through
the windshield from the outside (although I'm not 100% sure they were
doing this in 1970).

Also, get the 2-character engine ID code that's stamped into the block
face just below the deck (the place where the head meets the block).
If you have any further questions you can email me off-list.

Mine does...320 ponies beats the 170 hp stocker any day (and it's the original motor)on the looks issue, that's purely a matter of taste. I can think of several cars that looked great after '72. Fact is that the smog crap started before then (68 in some cars) and the only real bellwether besides the body styles is the fact that the HP ratings were net instead of gross after '71. Performance didn't really die in 72...more like '70that was the last year of the real performance motors.

I can shrink these files from 899KB to 390KB if any
one needs it and you can still read them fine.

John, you can get Richard's files from my website if you like.
Get a single 1.4mb zip file here: http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle.zip

Get each individual file here: http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle1.bmp
  http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle2.bmp
  http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle3.bmp
  http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle4.bmp
  http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle5.bmp
  http://www.5speedTransmissions.com/AlternatorArticle6.bmp

Right now I left them as .bmp files, so they're a little fat.
If there is still interest next week, I'll work on reformatting them as .jpg
files.  My quick attempt this morning left them fuzzy looking, so
I'll stick with the .bmp format.

I've heard a little about those changesI remember the 8/6/4 Caddy engine that failed miserably trying to shut down cylinders. I'm sure they could do it now, but I wouldn't wanna be the first to try one. As for shutting the car off at stop lights, that's a mistake to try. I would think the restart would create undue wear and tear and create safety issues.

I pay $48 an hour at the most at my independently owned auto repair shop...sometimes he charges even less if it's really easy for him to do...guess I'm lucky.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Ford Mustang Mach I versus new Chevy Products ?

2002-07-13 Thread ChevelleYenko

I like both the new and the old cars. Some of the new cars are wild. The new
2003 Viper will have 500 hp. The new Ford GT40 will have 500hp. The 2002
Corvette Z06 has an LS6 (based on the LS1) 405hp. I was looking at a cut away
LS1 display motor in the GM tent at Carlisle. The LS1 is an impressive design
and the bottom end looks really strong. The LS1 has some nice features such
as; aluminum block with iron liners, 6 bolt main caps in a crossbolt design,
aluminum heads with a nice looking rocker design, cast alu. oil pan used as a
stressed member, no distributor - has direct fire ignition with a separate
coil for each cylinder, intake manifold is composite design. This LS1 motor
is used in the very successful C5-R Corvette racing program where it is 427
cu in and makes about 700 hp. There are street driven Z06 Corvettes that run
11s with a few modifications.
