Re: [Chevelle-List] Water pump hose size for BBC

2002-10-01 Thread Kent Lewis

Dale,

Just checked my engine. It measures 2 at the waterpump outlet. This is
an aluminum GM short pump that is included with the ZZ502/502 kit. Also,
the reproduction radiator hoses that I plan to install have the 2 id at the
waterpump and 1 3/4 at the lower radiator. Do not have any other
waterpumps to check the measurement.

Just as a suggestion - ...Have you changed the batteries in your tape
measure lately ?... :)

This may sound like a silly question, but what is the standard hose size
(I.D.) for a BBC water pump? A rep from Cool Flex said that every big block
(not just Chevy) the he's seen has a 2 I.D. hose outlet. On their site,
when ordering a lower hose kit and checking the Big Block box, they come
back with a 1 3/4 on one end and a 2 reducer on the other. I just
replaced the radiator in my 67 big block car and double checked the lower
hose and it's 1 3/4 on both ends. I'm using a Summit (long) water pump
that I've had for close to 15 years now...have they changed or do I have an
odd pump?

[Chevelle-List] Tail shaft numbers

2002-10-01 Thread Craig A. Ellis

Has anybody got their number books handy? There is a tailshaft for a Muncie
on Ebay at the moment and the seller is in my neighborhood. He says it is a
1970 vintage. I've got a 70 but the tailshaft accidentally got swapped out
with one from a '65 Vette many years ago when it was in for a rebuild. The
tailshaft that came with the car is long gone (no one cared about such
things back then) but this one might be a nice number matching part for me.
The number is 3857584. Can anyone look it up and tell me if it's a 1970?
Also, how much should these cost?

Thanks

[Chevelle-List] Car Console's

Hello,

In school I am doing a project on custom consoles, aftermarket, and stock consoles. I
need to research the three, find out which is the most useable to the driver, and how
much each cost. I need to ask a huge favor to anybody that has these. If you could
fill out a little survey for me, it would be greatly appreciated.
For Custom Consoles:
Did you make it?
How long did it take?
How much money did it cost?
What features does it have(cup holders, etc)?
Why did you pick this over Aftermarket and Stock consoles?

For Aftermarket Consoles:
Who made the console?
How much was it?
What features does it have?
Why did you pick this over Stock and Custom consoles?

Stock Consoles:
What features does it have?
Did you install it, or was it actually stock in your car?
Are you happy with it?
Why did you pick this over Aftermarket and Stock consoles?

Thank you very much!

Tim,
I have a stock 4 speed console in my 68 that came with the car. The only
feature is the storage compartment. It is in good shape I like the way it
looks. Since the interior is completely stock I prefer a stock console. If I
had a radical custom interior then I'd go with a custom console.
Money is irrelevant when working on these cars. It just means you have to
save longer crimp more.

Tim,

For many years I used a custom console in my 67.

Did you make it? Yes I made it

How long did it take? Took about 3 days

How much money did it cost? Cost about $25 (1979 money)

What features does it have(cup holders, etc)? Had a place for the 2 speed
powerglide floor shifter, 2 cup holders and a small compartment for storage.

Why did you pick this over Aftermarket and Stock consoles? Didnt have the
money to purchase one... so I built one. ... Heck I was only 16... :)

If you are doing it Pro Street, then I would recommend an upgrade
while you do this. There are kits and plans to swap in F-Body 11 and
12 brakes that will give you a big disk and improve handling.

Check out http://chevelles.com/techref/ftecref2.html and the links to
Hotchkis and Global West. In fact, if you are going Pro Street, get
very familiar with these two companies because you will be buying stuff
from them. I would recommend that you decide which of the two you like
better and stick with one.

As a generalization, Hotchkis likes bigger sway bars and softer springs,
and Global West likes stiffer springs and smaller bars. Global West is
also older. Talk to the tech guys at each about what you want to do and
see what your gut feeling is about them. I am sure that it is easier to
tune the handling if you have parts from one of them. Imagine asking
Hotchkis what shocks will go best with the Global West springs...

Just checked it out and found that one of the wires to the relay had fallen
off which, when I plugged it in, the high fan came back on. Also, when I was
poking around those wires, it looked like that fesed wire had a nick in it
and was showing bare wire. I think it was grounding out and stopping the
fan. I will replace the section of wire when I get home. Thanks for helping

To the best of my understanding, the size of the tube is driven by the cam
profile and head design. What does the motor builder recommend?

I picked up some Hooker Super Comps from Frank on this list a couple years
ago... at the time I didn't realize there were large tube and small tube
headers. Anyways, I'm getting ready to do an engine swap and I now realize
I have large tube headers. Everything I've read says that small tube
headers are the way to go. What are the effects of having too big of
headers? I'm just wondering becuase I got such a good deal on these
headers, I'd hate to not be able to use them, but at the same time if
they're going to cause a lot of problems I don't want that either.

I'm looking at putting in a 375 horse crate engine with 400 something ft.
lb. of torque. Is this enough power to use the large tube headers without
problem? This will be a daily driver. The heads are L-98 corvette heads if
that makes a difference.

Thanks for any info, input, opinions, etc.

Hey Rodney. I put on a set of HSC 1 7/8 headers on my 408sbc. I spent a lot
of time trying to figure out why my timeslips when south. I recently swapped in
a set of 1 5/8 Dynomax headers, and picked up 0.2 (yes 2 tenths) in the 1/8th
mile!!! No other change, just the header swap made a big difference.

Get the smaller tube headers, and sell the ones you have. Don't make the same
mistake. :-)

good luck,

Re: [Chevelle-List] Car Console's

2002-10-01 Thread Kent Lewis

Tim,

For Aftermarket Consoles:

Who made the console?
-It is a Hurst DualGate shifter, made by Hurst in the late '60's.

How much was it?
-Whew! $225 for the shifter, $125 for reproduction console, $200 rechrome
the top plate, $20 neutral safety switch (NOS !), homemade mounting brackets
(MANY HOURS !), homemade wiring harness.

What features does it have?
-The Dual/Gate feature allows the shifter to switch from traditional
shifting (pull lever into D and leave it there), or slide the chrome cover
up to expose the ratchet shift features (bang 2nd, release, bang 3rd).

Why did you pick this over Stock and Custom consoles?
-It was the shifter/console that was used in the 1969 Yenko Camaro's and
Chevelle's and probably other high performance tuners (Nickey,
Baldwin-Motion, Dana), and the fact that it is rather rare to see one
installed, and it looks absolutely BITC#EN in the car ! :)

Hope this helps.

Hello,

In school I am doing a project on custom consoles, aftermarket, and stock
consoles. I need to research the three, find out which is the most useable
to the driver, and how much each cost. I need to ask a huge favor to anybody
that has these. If you could fill out a little survey for me, it would be
greatly appreciated.
For Custom Consoles:
Did you make it?
How long did it take?
How much money did it cost?
What features does it have(cup holders, etc)?
Why did you pick this over Aftermarket and Stock consoles?

 What features does it have?
-I used stock 2spd console in the 1966 chevelle Malibu SS Canadian Car

Did you install it, or was it actually stock in your car?
- It was stock in the car.

 Are you happy with it?
-Had no problems but I will never use a 2spd again.

Why did you pick this over Aftermarket and Stock consoles?
- I was putting the car back to original.

I am also going to put in a 3 auto console into the 1969 chevelle

[Chevelle-List] Disc Brake Help

2002-10-01 Thread Kyle Bennett

I have a brake question that's probably been answered many times before,
but since i'm relatively new to this list i hope you won't mind me
asking this.

I have a 71 chevelle which i hope to start a body off restoration in the
spring. It's not an original type of restoration, but more so a Pro
Street restoration/modification.

Question: What other cars come with disc brakes which can be swapped
over to a 71 Chevelle? I've was told a monte carlo would work, but i
would think that there are plenty of others.

Are there?

Help guys.
