Here's a 1974 Caprice convertible. I wonder which years the convertible was
offered. Anyway, I don't need to know tonight. The convertible part was more
curiosity than anything else.

Re: [Chevelle-List] tune up

2002-11-15 Thread jlon5
I upgraded to the Petronix Ignitor, not the Ignitor II. The distributor must
be pulled to install the first Ignitor that I tried, to check for end play
in the distributor because of the use of a magnetic ring under the rotor. I
didn't leave it in because I couldn't get it to run with it in, thought it
was the Ignitors fault. Got new one in mail and let sit in box on shelf for
5 months. One day I received new Jegs catalog and saw that a different
Ignitor module is available that the distributor does not have to be pulled
to install, no need to re-time, etc. The new Ignitor has an LS designation
in the part number which stands for Lobe Sensor. No gap to check, simply
screw onto base plate, feed wires through distributor and connect to coil.
Have been using for almost a year with no problems, but sure to follow the
directions included very carefully including all checks as you go along.

Re: [Chevelle-List] power steering pump

2002-11-15 Thread Rodney.
Well, originally the car had A/C, so the compressor was mounted on the
driver's side, but I've since added Vintage Air, which puts the compressor
on the passenger side and the alternator on the driver's side.

Everything was mounted up and working before this engine swap. I just can't
remember where/how this one bracket goes on.

What is more likely to matter is whether or not you have A/C.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Filling a trans from dry

2002-11-15 Thread Richard Milkiewicz
Be sure you fill the torque converter first. Then fill the trans till it
says full on the dip stick. Start it up and run for a minute and recheck.
Remember, the trans has to be hot for an accurate fill. And on a level
surface. Don't worry about air pockets. There are none. At the factory we
fill the converter first, then it goes in a test machine that fills the rest
of the trans. After the trans is started, the valve body and pressure lines
will fill and your level will drop. You don't need to fill the converter
full. About half or better will do. The pump will fill it up the rest of the
way. Don't overfill. It will foam out but it won't hurt anything. Just
messy.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Dash for 71 chevelle

2002-11-15 Thread Craig A. Ellis
Keith is correct. In fact, the dash was very likely painted from the
factory. Even if the black "color" appears molded-in, GM would paint the
dash to color match to other black plastic items. If the dash was any
other color than what the resin is, they would paint to match. The color
of the resin could be widely varied. Also, all molders use a percentage
of "regrind" - bad parts that are ground up and melted down into new
parts. The percentage is small but the color change it causes is
noticeable so paint is routine. Today, all OEMs paint dash components -
it is a huge industry within the car business. That you can not tell is
a tribute to how well the paint works!

If I have read these posting correctly, I am surprised at the
recommendations. We are talking about painting a DASH. People are
recommending Hammer paint and Wrinkle paint on a dash. Dash and other
plastic type panels need a special paint. I do not think Hammer or
Wrinkle
is correct paint. I painted my dash, changing it from a lime green to a
tan.
I used a plastic primer and then paint designed for interior plastic.
Yes,
you can fill holes in plastic when done correctly and lots of time and
care.
I may have just misunderstand the project here or there are allot of
ideas
which do not seem correct to me. When done correctly, you will not be
able
to tell if the dash is original or painted. My dash looks like it came
from
the factory, which it did not. People are says to paint over the wood
grain
panels?? I thought most wooden panel are just a contact type of stencil
which is used to give you a wood grain look??
Well maybe it is just late and I did not follow this posting correctly.
All
I will say is, if you are painting a plastic dash, you need to used
correct
paint designed for this type of material.

IIRC the holes are used anyway for the dashpad and I dont remember how the

If it's removed, do you think the holes would be very noticeable?

[Chevelle-List] Package Tray Question

2002-11-15 Thread Craig & Cerena Robertson

I need to replace the package tray on my 69 SS.  When I attempted to place the inside corner molding clips on the original package tray, a while back, it appears that the prior owner placed the metal molding, at the bottom of the rear window, upside down.  The corner molding clip holes won't line up.  My question is, what holds this metal strip in place on the package tray, on mine it looks like someone dumped a gallon of sealer around the rear window? Is it attached to the metal plate under the tray?  Also where the sail panels meet the package tray, is there suppose to be some type of trim piece there?  Thanks for any help.
