Oh ya, you can even use the stock cross shaft, but will need quite a few shims (like 3/4 of an inch) from everything I've read. The first link has a picture of the offset shafts, though I'm not sure if they'll work with stock a-arms - I think these are specifically for GW tubular a-arms. http://www.globalwest.net/Generation%20II%20a-body%20upper%20control%20arms% 20negative%20roll%20system.htm#Billet%20offset%20shafts This second link is to GW's Christmas sale page, I thought some of you might be interested, the prices look pretty good... http://www.globalwest.net/monthly%20sales%20page.htm cYa- Herb Lumpp 1966 El Camino ACES 3509, MCC 528 http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ - Original Message - From: "Galen and Melissa Love" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 5:54 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap > I haven't seen the offset shafts before, are there any websites were I can > find them? > > Thanks, > Galen > > - Original Message - > From: "Herbert Lumpp" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 3:46 PM > Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap > > > > Jason, > > > > > Is that a faint hint of an offer for my Superman? > > > I still can't shake that nickname for the car. > > > > Yes it was/is a faint hint, just don't tell my wife! :) I love '65s and > > yours looks like a great car for when I retire (in 9 years). Thanks for the info! I'll put it to good use. My whole concern is my custom console. The Hurst Comp Plus pretty much dictated how the Plexiglas was formed for the front portion, i.e., the shifter hole was located and cut specifically for it. RE: [Chevelle-List] Power brakes
Title: Message Disks in Chevelles didn't appear until 67 but the 69-72 are the ones to get. I don't think later model will fit. I understand any 69-72 A-body GM are a bolt-on. The very easiest way to get all new parts and have minimal labor time invested is to get a ~kit~ from one of the many suppliers ...OR... get a Baer kit and bolt them to the stock drum spindles. No messing with changing spindles means no pulling shocks, compressing the spring, busting ball joints loose, removing lower arms and then putting it all back together again. With the Baer system, unbolt the wheel/tire, remove drum brakes and backing plate, install new hub and rotor, supplied lines, splice in an adjustable prop valve, and hook up the supplied master cylinder. A power booster isn't even necessary unless you absolutely have to have the lower pedal pressure. Not much more work than doing a standard disk brake job and packing the front bearings. Yes it was/is a faint hint, just don't tell my wife! :) I love '65s and yours looks like a great car for when I retire (in 9 years). If you don't have or don't want to spend the money for the aftermarket arms, I'd say at least pop for the offset shafts because as far as I know, the b car a-arms won't work. cYa- Herb - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [Chevelle-List] Power brakes
Vernon, Make sure you read all the pages and articles you can. I would think that if you have all the parts you should be able to do this in a weekend. I went to the bone yard and pulled the spindles and disks from a Caddy giving me 12 inch disks. Now I need to have them drilled to the 4.75 inch pattern. As for the MC and power booster. Try to pull from the same car you pull the spindle and disks from. Time wise it could be done in a few hours but its such a collection of parts plan on longer. Re: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap
PS: Also keep in mind that certain rims will not clear the B body rotors if you choose to use those, and the fact that they have the 5 on 5 bolt pattern. You can use the 1LE rotors, but may have to grind a little on the rim to fit the hub and/or replace the wheel studs with SAE ones. You could also make a hub with a G Body rotor and put the 13" corvette rotors on it. The only other things you need off of the B body are the ball joints, the outer tie rods you can use G body ones. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap
The B body upper A arms will not work on an A body. Best thing to do is get the Global West uppers or the offset shaft kit. If and when I get to do this on my 70, I am going for the Global West setup. Tom - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap
Herb, Is that a faint hint of an offer for my Superman? I still can't shake that nickname for the car. One other question I have regarding the swap. I have read and printed nearly all the articles I have found and none mention the possibility of using the b car upper A arm. Everything says use the stock one and an offset shaft. Or "buy" after market upper A-arms. I dont want to be cheap but at the same time I am not remorgageing the house to do the resto. Since I went to the bone yard and pulled the whole spindle assembly why not go back and pull the upper A-arms from the same car. Re: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap
Hi Jason, The info I have regarding the b-body spindles is with stock springs you'll end up with a 1" drop because the "tall" b-body spindle acts like a dropped spindle. I never measured a stocker for comparison, but I think I ended up with a 3" drop or so by combining the b-body spindles, performance small block springs, and the weight of an all iron big block. If you use stock springs on all corners, you should end up with a nice rake. BTW, if you want to save a lot of money in the long run and double the money you've already invested in your 'Velle, let me know. :) cYa- Herb Lumpp 1966 El Camino ACES 3509, MCC 528 http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ - Original Message - From: "Jason Boivin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 5:52 AM Subject: [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap > Hey all, > > I have a question about the ride height of the front after swapping in the > b-body spindles. [Chevelle-List] B-body spindle swap
Hey all, I have a question about the ride height of the front after swapping in the b-body spindles. I am looking at my 65 and I want to raise it up or at least keep it the same. Will stock springs keep the ride height or do I need to change the springs. I am figuring on changing them any way since they are 38 years old. I would like it to end up with a slight rake like Dales Great Pumpkin. Re: [Chevelle-List] Gearvenders under/over verses 700R4
Hey John, I swapped a 700R4 into my 76 Vette about 6 or 7 years ago and I think it was one of the best changes I made to that car - to this day that trans works like a charm and with 3.70 rear gears I get 21 mpg on the highway. One thing to keep in mind, especially if your car has a short wheelbase (like a Vette) the Gearvenders adds length to the trans, and from the pictures I've seen, the extra length looks like quite a bit. cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES 3509, MCC 528http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ - Original Message - From: jlon5 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, December 04, 2002 6:24 AM Subject: [Chevelle-List] Gearvenders under/over verses 700R4 Anyone have any opinions on Gearvenders under/over drive verses a 700R4 tranny swap. I currently have a TH400 driving a 3.73 12 bolt posi and the revs are way to steep for long highway cruisin', 3000 @ 60 mph. Would like to drop them down to around 2000 @ 60 without swapping out rearend. Thanks in advance, John L. 70 SS454 ACES #5597
Re: [Chevelle-List] New GW parts...
I talked with GW the other day, a pair of the new arms are about $600 and a pair of the coil-overs are about $500 (at lease for my car). I think I'll stick with what I have, I can certainly put $1100 to better use. cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES 3509, MCC 528http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ - Original Message - From: Clint Hooper To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, December 01, 2002 5:56 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] New GW parts... Re: [Chevelle-List] Tremec & 66/67 shifters
Hi Mike, Sorry to take so long to reply... Anyway, the Richmond fits the 66 tunnel pretty good with very slight massaging and the linkage side of the trans. There is one catch though, because the 6 speed is longer than a Muncie and Richmond 5 speed, the crossmember needs to be moved back, not a big deal until you see the brackets welded to the frame don't go back far enough to bolt the crossmember to. I ended up adding a couple inches of metal to the bracket so the rearmost bolt holes on the crossmember had something to bolt to. Other than that the Richmond 6 speed fits pretty good (and Richmond's customer service/care is second to none!). cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES 3509, MCC 528http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ - Original Message - From: Michael Pell To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, December 04, 2002 7:25 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Tremec & 66/67 shifters The TREMEC 5sp will fit in the 68+ tunnels without modification, on the 4sp tunnel cars, other than the shifter opening needs widened a bit. For the original automatic cars (tunnel), you have the option of dropping the tailshaft about 3/8" or opening the tunnel up. Herb, while we're swapping info, how did the shifter linkages fit in the tunnel of your '66? I've tales of problems there, but don't know of anyone to confirm for me. thanks, Herbert Lumpp wrote: Dale, be careful with the Tremec. I've never installed one in a Chevelle, but the Tremecs are "tall" bodied transmissions. I don't know for a fact, but there's a chance the trans tunnel would need modifications to clear the Tremec's height. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. As for the Richmond 6 speed, I know for a fact they fit. :) Also, the Richmond has a side mounted shifter which lined up perfectly with the shifter hump I installed when the Muncie was in my Elky. Food for thought... cYa- Herb Lumpp 1966 El Camino ACES 3509, MCC 528 http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ - Original Message - From: Dale McIntosh To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 5:31 PM Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Tremec & 66/67 shifters Been thinking about it a while for the O/D feature. The steep 1st gear won't bother the GR8PMKN as much since it's pretty long legged with 3.07's anyway and with the O/D, it'd bring the RPMs down to the 2100/2200 range at 75 mph. My whole concern is my custom console. The Hurst Comp Plus pretty much dictated how the Plexiglas was formed for the front portion, i.e., the shifter hole was located and cut specifically for it. I could have another one formed, but with the "stock" rear shifter location of the 5-speed (rear and more centered), it'd mean rerouting the power window wires, stereo amp wire, etc. They fit snugly now between the shifter and the custom cup holders.I've also given serious consideration to a 700R4 for convenience but I like the idea of manually shifting and would have complete control over O/D with a 5-speed. Plus the added expense of a trans cooler, hooking the TV cable up to the FI unit, etc. The Tremec would be a no-brainer swap except for the trans mount and maybe driveshaft length.
