Re: [Chevelle-List] Roller Rocker Suggestions?

2003-02-01 Thread Herbert Lumpp
Jim,

If you're not getting crazy with the engine mods, I would highly recommend
the Comp Cams Magnum Roller Tip rockers. I had a set on one of my previous
cars and when I sold it I swapped the Magnums to the next car. I used that
set on four consecutive cars until I finally let them go when a friend of
mine bought the Blazer they were on.

I now have a set on the 454 in my Elky and they work great (and are much
less $$ than full roller rockers).

Re: [Chevelle-List] Carb Float Question

2003-02-01 Thread Herbert Lumpp
Both floats should be able to move freely. If the front does and the rear
doesn't, it sounds to me like something in the rear is binding. You may
want to remove the needle assemble and make sure it's not full of crud or
something and then reinstall it and try adjusting it. It could be that it's
adjusted down too far. If the needle assembly needs to be replaced, they
aren't very expensive.

Well gang,

Again I come looking to extract some of your expertise

It has been recommended to me by the shop guy who just
redid my heads (WAHOOO!) to pick up a set of
roller rockers for them. I was looking at the Crane
Aluminum ones that are sold at Jegs, but didn't know
if anyone had any feedback they could provide about
the do's and don'ts of roller rockers.

Vernon,

Do you need a metering block, or the thin
flat plate that screws into the body ?  I may just have the thin flat
plate in my box of Holley carb parts.  You are welcome to it if that is
what you need.

I hope some one can help me out. I need a
secondary metering block plate for a 4160 holley. I tried holley and they say
they don't sell to the public so I tried Jegs and they have the part number is
in their computer but it says not avaible from holley anymore. The part number
is 34r1993.  With out this part the gas in the back bowl drains into the
intake when I shut off the car. I'm afraid if this keeps up very long it will
wipe out my engine. I bought this used and the plate wasn't in it. Couldn't
figure out why gas kept running  in the intake. Looked at an exploded
view and there it was. Any ideas?

2003-02-01 Thread J. Brady
Thanks all for your feedback on my issue with the
heads- I took all of your advice and had the existing
ones re-worked. The guy who did it was very
knowledgeable and told me that these heads were in
great shape, and it was a good move to rework them-
He even admitted as many of you have this week that he
has 5 pairs just like them in his garage!

Thanks to all who contributed their input on this
topic for me this week.. You guys are really helping
me meet my goal of having the car see the road this
Spring!

Best regards,

RE: [Chevelle-List] Finally got some track time

2003-02-01 Thread Bill Vander Werf

I bought a Moser setup. They call it a
bolt-in but it comes to you in bare steel. I cleaned the housing up (some weld
spatter and surface rust) and sprayed it with PPG DP90LF. I like the look of
the DP. In reality, if you didn’t worry about how pretty it is, you could
actually clean everything up and bolt it in.

I was able to use my Chevy brakes by
opening the axle hole in the brake backing plate up big enough to pass the Ford
axle bearing through it. Then the axle retainer bolts the whole package
together. I used a die grinder with a carbide bit and cut a little at a time
until everything just fit. The GM flanges are already welded to the housing.
After that I drilled the bolt holes in my brake drums out to accommodate the 1/2”
lug bolts.

I bought it with 31 spline axles, 3.89
gears (9 -35) and a US Gear posi unit. I used Southside Machine lower bars and
Jegs adjustable uppers (very good quality) so I could adjust my pinion angle. The
Southside Machine lowers were the only thing that kept it from being bolt-in
because I welded their brackets on instead of bolting them. So far I think I’m
on the right track, although I didn’t think the car would be strong enough
to overpower the slicks.

My friend says, “There’s no
such thing as too much power, too little traction is the problem.”

What ever you do not use E & J. TRANSPORTATION from Sacramento I would personally haul your car for free before I would recommend them. They messed my car up pretty good ($2000.00 from their insurance company) and tried everything they could to get out of paying. I wouldn't let them haul a car to the scrap yard for me.

Brian,

Check out Stewart Components... http://www.stewartcomponents.com/html/products/waterpumps.asp

I have a Stewart hi-flow pump on the Elky and Vette and they work
great.

  Subject: [Chevelle-List] Another
  fan/water pump question

  Is
the correct way for the clutch-type fan to shroud aspect to be 1/3 into shroud
or 1/3 out? My memory is getting me confused. Also, I would like my car to run
a little cooler in the heat of the summer when the A/C is on. I have a stock
water pump. Would you guys recommend a higher flow WP or maybe just the
auxillary elec. fan mounted in the shroud? Sitting in traffic with the A/C on
in 95 degrees and above temps, (with a new stock replacement 3-core radiator)
It will run up to about 225 degrees and that is starting to make me a little
nervous. Then I gotta turn off the a/c. Guess I should have saved up for a
better radiator. Are the higher flow water pumps worth the
  money?

[Chevelle-List] Dale - upper rad hose

2003-02-01 Thread Herbert Lumpp
Title: Message

Dale,

I was looking at the pic below and was wondering if you have a part number
for the upper rad hose.  The one I have is the correct hose for a big block
Elky but I don't like the way it goes straight to the rad.  I'd prefer a
little bit of curve like yours has.  Thanks.

What I would guess they might do is duplicate the flanges that
bolt the radiator to the support on the engine side of the radiator as
well.  As long as you don't have the filler cap to one extreme side
  (like I did - http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/p001472.jpg),
it would give you space to mount the fans assuming the height fit between the
upper and lower hose bungs.  My question would be where are they
going to route the transmission cooling lines.  They'd almost have to be
out the side of the tank instead of the engine side as normal since the fan
assembly would block the trans cooler.

  It gets curiouser and curiouser

Bill:
You wrote this regarding mounting of two Spal 11 inch fans on PRC
aluminum radiator.

I have a direct contact with
a guy at PRC who has asked me to send the diagram sketches. He told me they
would mount the Spal fans not on the core but on the tanks or "rails".
Therefore, it may fit. He does not recommend mounting on the radiator core.
But, I will write back when I receive the response. I could be off the
mark.
Peace,
Big Ken

Re: [Chevelle-List] Finally got some track time

2003-02-01 Thread Capt Crunch
GReat job Bill... I honestly can't remember your combo you are running (eng, trans, gears, tires) you are running but I'd say you must be going pretty good to pull low 12's w/ 110. But really nice times for the first time out... keep picking away and get in the 11's. What are your 60 ft's looking like? Good Luck.   Mikey - Original Message - From: Bill Vander Werf Sent: Saturday, February 01, 2003 12:56 AM To: Chevelle list Subject: [Chevelle-List] Finally got some track time   Well, I finally got the beast to the track. I was expecting mid to high 12s. What I got was a 12.14 out of the box followed by a tire spinning, 12.25, a 12.07 and a 12.16. My MPHs were 110.61, 111.19, 111.35 and 110.89. The humidity got real high by my last run and pretty much squashed any hopes of 11.90s for tonight, although I know the car has 11s in it. The driver just needs to find them. The car runs goood.   I am a very happy gearhead right now. All the problems I went through to get the car to this point almost seem worthwhile…..well, almost.   Bill Vander Werf
