[Chevelle-List] engine overhaul info

2003-02-07 Thread HarKemAsso
HI wondering if anyone has a favorite book on how to overhaul engines?
or has one to sell-
or know of one that deals with all kinds of engines (mostly v-8s from
1955-1975 or so) like chevys, buicks pontiacs mopars and f&rds even (seems
like i get into just about everything)
need a book that would go into detail right down to the crank.
or something on-line that i could access, i tried a search and only came up
with books for sale, but i would hate to buy one without looking through it.

i am rebuilding a 402 right now, and my library is closed for remodeling- and
the largest branch of it as well- last time i did a 400 Pontiac and had a
book. there was something to do with the thrust bearing- and putting
backwards or forward force on the crank with a screwdriver as you tightened
it or something??? i don't want to miss any of those little details!!
Thanks a bunch for reading my ramblings!

Re: [Chevelle-List] cowl tags

2003-02-07 Thread yenkochevelle

Do you have the complete trim tag info on the car
with the dash for paint code? I have seen this on a few 68 and 69 Chevelles.
There have been some Carolina Blue Chevelles found with the dash trim tag no
paint code. Also seen a special interior code for the 68's with Buick style
interior.

  James,

Hello.  Did you know that the cowl
tag that has the paint code listed as "--" is a special order paint ?  It
is my understanding that you could order just about any color from the GM
lineup for an additional cost.  If memory serves me correctly, it was
something like $28.00 extra.  But the belief is that you received a
better quality paint job.  The reason for the dashes is simple - there
was no paint code listed in the Chevelle lineup for the color that was
selected.  Having the dashes "--" in the cowl tag is really something
kind of special, at least to me.

Title: Message

All Chevelle rear ends will 'bolt in',
but:

Rear spring
mounting pads differed in that 1964-66 rear ends used a flat pad with a hole
drilled in the center. 1968-72 rear ends have circular spring mounting pads,
which are 3/4" higher that the early flat pad.  The 68-72 rear ends are
wider but will bolt into a 67 without a spring change.  I had a 68-72
rear in my 67 for quite a number of years.  It does limit wheel/tire sizes
due to its being wider.  I'm not even sure it was out of a Chevelle since
it had 2.79 gears and Chevrolet didn't have a 2.79 gear set - and yes, I did
pull the cover off and not only counted the teeth but the count was stamped on
the ring gear as well.

I've been told
that 67 was a transition year in that A-cars might have a 1964-66 style rear
end, a 1968-72 rear end (which is wider, and commonly available), or a "hybrid"
rear end, which will have the 58.5" width, but with the early spring mounting
pad and trailing arm brackets but I've never seen a 67 with the flat spring pad
so I can't confirm that.

The Decatur swap meet is the weekend of Feb.21-23. The first Chickasha,OK swap meet is the weekend of Mar.21-23 and the first Arlington swap meet is the weekend of April 11-13. I think I was wrong about Super Chevy weekend at the Texas Motorplex. I'm not 100% sure but think the dates are April 25-27 (same weekend as the big Pate swap meet).

The years taht will bolt in and be the same width

2003-02-07 Thread Leo Baker
Sound like a good combination, remember one of the factors in
mufflers and noise is the number of cylinders per muffler, duals on a
V8 will be noisier than the same muffler with all 8 flowing thought
it.

Hey all,

I am building an exhaust system for my 67 with a 250-I6. I have
headers, with 1 1/2 x 36 main tubes, into 2 1/2 x 5 collectors.
What do I do to determine the best pipe size? cn I run 2 1/2 all
the way back, or would that cause nasty side effects?

I'm considering a Flowmaster 70-series muffler (#52573,
offset/offset 2 1/2 in and out.) Erring on the side of quieter
rather than louder would be preferable.

If I can, running the headers into a y-pipe, then to the muffler
would be the easiest, seeing as the collectors and the muffler both
accept 2 1/2" pipe.

Any thoughts?
Dave.

Re: [Chevelle-List] EFI on old motors

2003-02-07 Thread Dwight Fulton

EFI in no way will put "undue stress" on the engine or make it run hotter but, it will make it run smoother & more efficently which tranlates into lower emissions and in most cases better MPG. The setup is costly and can be a hassle getting tuned in correctly but, you are rewarded with a very dependable, driveable and low maintence engine.

John

I installed them in 1973I dont remember what kind they were. When I get
home tonite, I'll try to see if there is a name on them.

PS..
the LS6 has been off road for several years now...I used to fix up cars and
then sell them. One year the motor vehical department stopped me from selling
any more cars until I got a "dealer" liscenseI was on my 6 car that year.

I been holding on to the LS6 'cause I knew I didn't want to sell it. Now I'm
finally getting around to getting the 'old girl running and maybe bring it to
the Chevellabration in a year or two.

Jusy MY opinionI's your car, you do as you please !!! I prefer stock
looking cars, but a nice modified one is just as nice. I have a 70 LS6 and
i't virtually original.but I have an itch to pull and save the LS6 and
put in a monster BB.some now advertise upwards of 700 ci..I also have
a 69 and 02 vett and yes you will run into people who will "complain" if it
ain't original.

Do what you like, you gotta drive and live with YOUR car, and don't worry
about the FEW critics.save all original stuff and HAVE FUN !!!

Re: [Chevelle-List] (NC) Let's trade!

2003-02-07 Thread Herbert Lumpp
Your right about that Brad! The only problem is the 78 in Arizona and I'm
in Virginia and "technically speaking" I already sold the 78 last August,
but since I still haven't received payment, I consider it still mine.
You're probably wondering what the hell?! A longtime friend of mine had his
car stolen and couldn't afford to buy another car at the time. I
loaned/sold him the 78. The way I see it, if he never pays me, I'll always
have a Blazer! :)

Now the 87 on the other hand, it really is a nice truck...

2003-02-07 Thread Dave Corgill
Does anyone have a Q-Jet with the AC idle compensator
solenoid ? The one that kicks up the idle when AC is on.
Could you send me a pic. I can only find brackets for
ED & holly.
Also has anyone had a Q-Jet built by Jet performance?

Thanks

2003-02-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
James,

welcome to the list.

André

Hello, everyone my names is James.
I'm from North Texas, I've been restoring chevy's for the better part of my
years, my last three cars have been 69 chevelles you might say im stuck on
year's, anyway my present project is a 69 chevelle two door post, i found in
a savage yard in the middle of Dallas, 400 dollars later it rest was in my
hands capable hands, about 7000 dollars and a  thousand man hours, bring me
near the end of my restoration, first of the car was strip down to the bare
so i needed to find just about everything you might think, , 12 bolt posi 400
turbo tranny, 396 engine, f40 and f41 front and rear suspension, i didn't
have the build sheet, so i put it back the way i would have bought it, had i
been 10 years older.   everything on the car has been gone though, the only
thing i wish i done myself was the paint work, which turn out less then
perfect, so to anyone that read this if you like to restore cars learn to do
your own paint and body, anyway im waiting for warm weather to finish this
bone stock big block beast, here is a picture a few months ago, thanks and
look forward to reading your mail, James p/s i will post a pic just as son
has i figure out how
