Thanks Jason,

I finally got to an agreement with him. He is going to paint the car and he
promises to have it ready within 2 weeks. I am then going to pick it up and
put all of the trim weatherstrips back on myself. This has been taking way
too long and I need to get it wrapped up, but if I had to take it home with
no paint on it, I would have to hear the next guy's story about how he has
to take it all down because he doesn't know what's under it, yada yada yada,
and I would be out much more money.

So, it looks like it will be home in 2 weeks painted, and that's enough to
make me happy. Now I'm going to have to put it back together in my spare
time which I wasn't counting on, but it's not the worst that could happen.

I noticed Clint mentioned how paint was such a priority. I have to confess,
I accepted some flaws in my car to get one with stellar body work and
excellent paint. There are SO many guys in the paint body business that
have been sniffing fumes too long or, as Clint pointed out, on the insurance
gravy train. A couple years ago, I asked a local shop to put a trunk pan in
a '72 Chevelle I had at the time and he laughed. He would not even LOOK at

the car!

Boy, I'm in the wrong business...

Even though it took two years and too much money to get body work and paint
done on my Elky, I guess I got lucky when I found the Cobbler's Shop.
Honestly, the only reason it took two years was because my finances didn't
allow it to go any faster! And not once in the two years he had it was I
concerned about the quality of work being done.

It must have had something to do with the fact that the shop didn't do any
insurance work and each employee was an enthusiast in his area of expertise.

[Chevelle-List] Rear End Skewed

2003-03-28 Thread Larry Butler

The 72 El Camino I bought a few weeks ago has a rear axle code of KDC 320 1.
This is a 12-bolt. According to my research, I have a '71 2.73 ratio,
non-posi track, built in Buffalo, on November 16th, 1970 1st shift. Can
anyone validate this?

Assuming the above axle code interpretation is correct, I have to assume
that the rear end has been replaced. (The Body Number Plate has the car
built on the 4th week of September, 1971, almost a year later). Now for the
problem. The left tire extends outside the wheel well by about 1. The right
tire is inside the wheel well about 2. It is skewed about an inch to the
left (driver's side). I have examined the upper and lower control arms in
place and they look straight. The bushings are very worn and need to be
replaced. There are gas shocks and the passenger side leaks making the car
lean to the right. I have thought that the bad shock might be causing some
of this skew and am thinking of jacking the rear up and putting it on jack
stands. Anyone have any suggestions on how to further examine this? Where to
take measurements from?

Thanks,

Larry

tire is inside the wheel well about 2".

Thanks,

Larry

It was actually built Nov 16th, 1971. KDC is a 71 code, not a 70. So the rear was built 2 months later than the body of the car. The general rule I heard is between 4-8 weeks to be correct for the car, someone correct me if I am wrong.
As for the wheel problem. Have you checked the backspacing on the rims? Another thing that can cause this is the body not being set square on the frame due to worn out body mounts. The trailing arm bushings and shocks could also be a factor. Hope this helps.

Clint,
Here's the original post I sent about the tires. I was replying to someone
that wanted a set but don't remember who it was.

They have been discontinued. They are not being produced anymore. There is
one set in Ohio that I know of (my son works at Goodyear he checked
provided this info), the tires are second generation (evidently they made
two different sets of them) 225-70-14's, (4 of them) at the Lima, Ohio
Goodyear store. There phone # is 419-227-2142.
Hope this helps.

James Stansbury's hard drive crashed so he can't find the phone number he
had to buy a set of these gold letter 14 tires. Someone in Ohio had a set
for sale. If you know this information, please post it or email me offline.
I'll make sure the info gets to James.

got some
pretty sketchy news, which I'm not thrilled about. I'm waiting to hear
from
Ron what his intentions are.
