You
may not have screwed up.  It could actually be a cracked head.  That
would suck, but it's not worth selling your car over.  I understand your
frustration, I cracked a head before, it sucks.  Luckily, I was able to see
the crack before I reassembled.  You can try retorquing the bolts holding
everything together first, and see if that will fix it.  If you are
EXTREMELY lucky, the bolts may have just loosened up enough to let the water
pass through.  Most likely, you'll need to tear her back down, and check
your gaskets again for possible leaks.  If there are no visible leaks, I'd
take the heads to a machine shop, and have them check for cracks.  A head
can be cracked, and not be visible.  Good luck with it.  If you want
to add some competition to it, since neither of us can go out and race other
cars right now, we can race to see who fixes their car first!
;-)

Okay guys... I apparently screwed up somewhere.
I've been changing the oil the last couple of days to get all the brownish
looking oil out after I changed the head gaskets and put everything back
together.  Yesterday everything was looking better.  I drove across
town and checked the oil.  It looked clean and there was no fluid loss
from the radiator.  I came home last night and took it for a drive again
and then parked it for the night.  When I went out to change the oil this
morning I had a rush of water come out, and then the oil soon after.  I
  knew that wasn't good.

So, I guess I screwed up somewhere.  My question is
this is there any way to tell if I screwed up on the head gaskets or just
  the intake manifold?

P.S.: If anyone wants a deal on a 71 Chevelle let me
know.  I'm so frustrated with all of this right now, I'm ready to sell it
and buy a new car.   This would be one of those deals someone was
talking about the other day where you make out like a bandit on all the
aftermarket stuff at my expense.  It's got a new 4 core radiator, dual
12" electric fans, new crate engine (11/02) 350/375 horse, Edelbrock
Q-Jet, MSD HEI, CS130 alternator, Edelbrock alum. water pump, custom interior,
cragar keystone klassics, Vintage air, Global West 12" 1LE front disks, sound
  system...

You can use a deal called a Combustion Block Tester that you can buy at
NAPA, or PBoys or other parts stores.  It consists of a vial that
you put the tester fluid in that has a little pump at the top.  Open
the radiator cap, warm up the car until the thermostat opens, then
install the block tester & pump.  If the fluid turns yellow,
then you've blown a head gasket, or the head is cracked.
Instructions come with the kit that are more clear.  You can also
buy a pressure tester, pressurize the cooling system, pull the plugs, and
see if water squirts out the cylinders.  Pressure testing will also
check for a cracked cylinder if you drain the oil & leave the drain
plug out, pressurize the system, and see if water comes out of the drain
hole.
If you want a pro to look at it, check out
www.i-atn.net
and look under their shop finder.  Most of the iatn guys are
top-notch.
Hope this helps.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle Malibus vs. Chevelle SS'= return values ???? Legitimate question and concern...

2003-08-05 Thread Michael Pell
That's a real nice way to treat those who took a moment to answer your
question (other than the 10 year old who needs a good old fashioned
whipping)

Those of us who've been down the road of restoring an old car understand
that it's not an "investment" in terms of making money, but in terms of
getting pleasure from doing the work, having a classic, and enjoying the
ride. I've spent several years restoring a Malibu back to original,
plus a few touches that I've always wanted. I could never get the total
investment out of it by selling it, but then, I'll never sell it either
so I really don't care from that standpoint.

The point is to build the car you want, otherwise if you build a car you
don't want you will very likely take a loss when you sell it (not to
mention the lost hours of labor). Of course that's not necessarily
including the value you got while building it and/or driving it.

Funny how you were concerned about offending others in your original
email, but still made the following comments. This sure seems far more
offensive than your first questions (yes I would agree legit questions,
BTW).

Now that just might work. You should get front row seats in the
Great Chevelle drag strip in the Sky. "If" it's a F**D you buy.
I used to tell my kids be good or when you die you will go to
the F**D drag strip & have to pick up the broken parts that
fall off FOREVER, hey it worked ;)

[Chevelle-list] Blown Head Gasket PART 2

2003-08-05 Thread Diane Peppin

Rodney;
Good luck figuring it out, maybe this is a good time
to get dart heads? Look on the bright side, and whatever you do don't get rid of
your ride. You take good care of it, and it will take care of you...shy of not
fishtailing, these light assed bit"*hes love to slide. I remember in 85 when I
was turning left onto a hill on ramp in the rain. I started sliding right away..
to the right, I stepped on the pedal and tried to straighten it up...then it
went the other way and finally the third fish tail spun me around
completely, and I sat facing the way I came, sitting perfect on the shoulder of
the road. It was dark and visibility was 50ft. In the dark as I sat looking
ahead..down the ramp on the other side of the road...I saw the cherries on the
town cruiser light up, and spin to let me know he was coming. When he
gave me the ticket he told me..I saw you start fishtailing and saw you try to
punch it and bring it her around, and I said to myself "if she gets out of this
third one I'll let her go...

[Chevelle-list] help needed from fellow Chevy lovers

2003-08-05 Thread J. Brady
Gang,

I'm trying to track down a picture of the emblem on
the front of a 1940 Chevrolet. I am contemplating the
design for a tattoo, and need a pic of the shield for
a template. If any of you can help with this it would
be greatly appreciated. Just be sure if you can get
the pic, that it includes the silver "wings" on both
sides of the shield.

Thanks!

Re: [Chevelle-list] HEI tune-up kits

2003-08-05 Thread Don
Title: HEI tune-up kits

I put an Accel "Billetproof" electronic distributor in my chevelle small
block over a year ago & haven't had any problems with it.  ($192 plus
coil at Jeg's )
I just installed a Mallory HEI distributor in a friend's small block
chevelle ($159 at Summit with coil, cap, etc) I haven't started the engine yet
so I can't advise on performance but it is a bolt in replacement & on
initial inspection seems to be high quality.
Don

  Looking to upgrade my
HEI distributor and was looking at summit and jegs. All of the
  kits I was looking at
have the cap, rotor, module, coil,
adjustable vacuum advance, advance weights & springs,
and  bushings. There seems to be a bit of difference in prices.

  Proform-79.99
  MSD-137.99
  Pertronix-119.99
Have any of you had any
experience with any of these? Proform good or bad? I was thinking on staying
away from Accel being that my
  current Accel
cap and rotor (stock module and
coil) which have only been on there 1 year, are all worn out and carboned up
  and carbon tracking. I
don’t know if it is just because of the rest of
the ignition needs better quality parts added or not.
