[Chevelle-list] Chains

2003-10-09 Thread Dave Sands
The use of chains when the 1960's flawed motor mounts break has been
mentioned here recently.
Laugh or cry: When I was a kid a mechanic chained the driver's side of
my '66 Chevelle's 283 when that mount broke. Later I hammered the gas
pedal as I turned a hard right at an intersection and a link of that
chain caught in the steering column, at the joint. Held it like it was
welded.
I was suddenly accelerating diagonally across four lanes of traffic.
Nothing worse than severe embarrassment happened, fortunately.
But there's definitely a wrong way to use a chain to assist a motor
mount.

Thanks thats great,
can any of you body gooruus confirm this info below.

For exterior metal (usually the body) any of the automotive grade enamel or lacquer primers and paints can be used. However, a lacquer primer does not inhibit rust. If the part is to remain unpainted for any length if time, the primer will absorb water and the metal will rust under the paint. DuPont as a relatively new primer called "Vera prime". It is supposedly a polyurethane with an etchant that when dry seals the metal from any water. Thus competes a quick course in fighting rust. Is that to say that I dont need to spray a sealer type primer (epoxy primer?) to keep it from rusting?

What about what they call metal prep?

I thought I would be able to work any small imperfections out after the sealer type prime was on? Is that true?

Can you recomend any good readings on this?
Thanks again for all your help!

Get a good self etching primer, like Dupont Vari prime. Spray a very light coat over all metal surfaces. You will still be able to see through the primer for any additional work needed. Self etching will keep the bare metal from rusting and allows for good adhesion when you shoot your primer once you are ready.

Many are the question of the amateur.

I have my 66 down to bare metal with most of the body work done.
Can I have it primered or do it myself to keep it from rusting?(will the primer seal it?)
What kind of primer should one use?
Can you use spoting putty on top of primer?
Thanks guys!

Re: [Chevelle-list] bare metal( will primer seal from rusting?)

2003-10-09 Thread Mike Holleman

Vari Prime or anybody's self etching primer is designed to
chemically etch bare metal to both seal and aid adhesion. There should be no
rust after the etching primer if you have removed it first. The metal prep I am
familiar with is a rust converter, not a sealer. Once etched, you can continue
working on the body. Just reapply afterwards to areas of bare metal. A
PPG company, Specialty Coatings, has the etching primer in an spray
can for about 8 bucks a can. This is real handy for redoing small areas as you
go. Keep in mind that this process does not replace priming for paint. It just
keeps the rust away until you are ready to prime and paint.  Hope this
helps.

Re: Re: [Chevelle-list] starter problem?

2003-10-09 Thread gm2
I checked the battery cable and saw that there was a build up of corrosion in the
battery wire. The terminal connection was fine and clean, but the corrosion in the
cable was the cause of the shutdown.

After cleaning the end of the cable, the car started right up.

It's hard to believe that this would shut the whole system down.

Thanks for the help!
