someone probably switched the rods around in the column.  tilt columns work a little differently than a standard column.  The ignition switch is mounted upside down on tilt columns.

I did. I found another one in a wrecking yard, but it seems they were

available elsewhere or also

would work with just a fused jumper... Ed

[Chevelle-list] Need help with gauges

2003-11-24 Thread DHASSEL999

Hi,
I'm restoring a 64 Chevelle Malibu 2 door ht. The car came with idiot lights. Upon installation of the optional gauges and a new wire harness setup for them, I have discovered that I need an item called a shunt (resister). Much to my dismay, they are not available. I was told they only came on the 63 Nova and 64 Chevelle. Has anyone else run into this problem and how did you work around it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Actually, if you drill out the rivets holding the horn together,
you'll find it's actually quite simple. Usually, the problems with old
horns is rust buildup. A good cleaning and re-alignment of the armature (?
the plate that actually does the buzzing) will fix it unless the coil is
open. Brake cleaner and a light wire brush will usually do it. Now would
be the time to paint it. Put the horn back together and put some bolts
through it with ny-lock locking nuts. Test and adjust the screw until it
is nice and loud. The bolts will keep as they are, make them chrome for a
nice look, zinc plated if you want to paint over them, or pop-rivet them
back in.
Hope this helps.

Good idea for a non-show car and it will work if the diaphragm isn't rusted
through (like mine). I will need new diaphragms & I need the factory look
for the car. I'll have to figure out how to crimp the rivets like Delco
did, but I have a plan in mind. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Thanks,
BL

I think that someone here knew of a place that sold horn rebuild kits for
Corvettes that would also work on Chevelles. Could you please let me know
whether I was dreaming or not??

Here is the site I found a while back. I have not ordered the repair kit
myself, however via email they said their kits should work on other Delco
GM horns for years listed. The "should" always makes you wonder. If you
get more details or order - please let us know.

Thanks, I ordered it today (it was the last one on the shelf). When I get
it I'll let you know if it's a good kit.

All GM cars used part# 1892164 (high note) from 1965-75, and part# 1892162
(low note) from 1965-71. The brackets were the only difference from one GM
make/model/year to another.

[Chevelle-list] Steering column question

2003-11-24 Thread Bob Pearson

Group, I bought a tilt steering column and
before I was going to put it in, I inserted my new key lock cylinder into it.The
mechanism (twist to start) works backwards(Twisting the key
forward-clockwise,then releasing it so it springs back to the on position is the
way it should work.Mine works in the opposite direction, twisting the key
counter clockwise to start!) Has anyone had this problem? Can the column be
rebuilt backwards? I've tried a different ignition switch, and a different lock
cylinder, to no avail. The lock cylinder only can go in one way. If you could
email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I haven't
been getting my list lately. Thanks!
