[Chevelle-list] rear gears
hi gang I've got a question or two regarding the gearing of my differential.I've got a 67 Malibu that had a 283 and a powerglide, I've pulled them and installed a 305 and a TH350. My question is this "what would you recommend for the gears in my rear end"? I'm looking to decrease my rpms on the long haul and increase my mileage.to the best of my knowledge my gears are stock. any help would be greatly appreciated it looks like the casting on the rear end is "3894938N" ? its a non posi 10 bolt stamped on the tube it looks like "CR1109B" or could be "cr11098" ? hope this helps Bill Bradley67 MalibuEdmond Oklahomahttp://groups.msn.com/SpidrManspics/mycar.msnwhttp://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/chevellerestoration/

yes, disconnect the hot cable from the battery, torque the bolts, dont over torque, and you may need a heat shield depending on your exhaust enjoy Bill Bradley 67 Malibu Edmond Oklahoma http://groups.msn.com/SpidrManspics/mycar.msnw http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/chevellerestoration/ - Original Message - From: Pelle Andersson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Chevelle Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 29, 2003 11:17 AM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Starter!? Title: Message Bill, The "CR" code is for a 3.70 posi, 1109 is Nov 9, and B is Buffalo assembly. I'd suggest you look at http://www.chevellestuff.com/generic/rpm_calculator.htmand play with gear ratios to find what'll work in your highway speed ranges. If you know your tire size, you can play with ratios available and see what RPM's you'd be running at a given speed. Transmission type selection is moot since you're looking at a 1-to-1 ratio in high gear unless you want to toss in the variable of an O/D transmission. Being an automatic, you might want to allow 200-300 RPM for converter slippage as well. For example withall things being equal (assuming a regular 205x70x14 tire), 3.70's at 75 give you about 3700 RPMs while a 3.31 drops that to 3300. Swapping to an O/D (such as a 700-R4) and keeping your 3.70s drops your RPMs to 2600 in O/D at 75. I used this page quite a bit when I was deciding what rear tire sizes would work for me. Re: [Chevelle-list] rear gears
Bill, I may not be much help but here is what I see. Highway performance between the 283/PG and 305/350 would be basically the same. Both are 1 to 1 in high gear. The code that counts is the one stamped on the axle tube. In 67 the CR is supposed to be 3.70 posi. That would be highly unlikely in a 283/PG car. Go back and look again real close. The first letter is gonna be a C, the second is critical in determining what you have. As far as a recommendation for a good highway gear, go 3.08. My 65 283/PG has that combo and does well at highway speeds. I'm taching around 2600 at 60 MPH. RE: [Chevelle-list] My combo on desktop dyno.
Brad. Just came home from the Christmas holidays so I'm here enjoying reading the list. Thanks a lot for all the info, the engine is not yet started and was just supposed to be a cheap one, that is arp studs, forged rods a milodon pan scrapers etc etc etc. I think I could get it a roller cam and keep the heads call it quit and start a new project or maybe the cam and some heads :) After that I'll start a new life with a new and bigger engine, maybe with two turbos. I already have a 10,7 compression all forged 355 with a solid roller (no specs on the cam :-( ), roller rockers, arp studs, performer rpm heads, intake and a holley 650 double pumper in my van (as for now to no use, I could easily explain that with just one picture haahah) so I wouldnt mind using a solid roller on the street... and then it looks just so manly to adjust valves haha :o) Well Brad, just wanted to thank you for all the info :) Med Vennlig Hilsen/Kind Regards/Cordiali Saluti André Broe Jensen -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brad Waller Sent: 23. desember 2003 23:42 To: 'The Chevelle Mailing List' Subject: RE: [Chevelle-list] My combo on desktop dyno. Andre, Nothing wakes up a motor like a roller cam, except maybe a solid lifter cam. If you don't plan to drive all that much, you can get away with a solid lifter cam and annual (or longer) valve adjustments. If you want the drivability and not have to worry about adjusting valves every so often, you could go for a roller. Roller cams are a lot more expensive when you add in the retrofit lifters. Even a conservative roller cam like the XR264HR bumps up the torque. Want 450 lb-ft from 2000 to 4000 RPM? Plus you get another 20 HP. Want to get more aggressive? The XR288HR drops a bunch of torque (but still over 400 from 3000 to 5000 RPM), but knocks HP up to 417 @ 5,500 RPM. All of this with the same heads you have. Upgrade to a more modern head like the World S/R Torquer and you can buy more performance. The head manufacturers can recommend cams to match, and the cam manufacturers can recommends cams for various heads and your setup and needs. For a great street setup, your intake is just fine. At some point you might need some more carburetor, but you could still use the 600 up to maybe 450 HP, maybe before. If you stay in the lower RPM band, then you don't need the bigger carburetor. But heads and cam can really make a difference. I'm looking for my roller cam, all forged small block to be over 450 HP and 475 TQ. This is with upgraded everything. My real goal is more than 350 HP at the rear wheels. If you want a goal for next year, research the heads out there and decide on one, then choose the right cam for (your wallet) the head, your car, and your style of driving and do that swap next. Buy new head bolts of you do this. It should only take you a weekend. Title: Message OK, here's your results. The biggest variable here is that I used a stock 441 casting flow file as I have no idea how different your flow is with the port and polish job. This could be a big difference, but you can look at this as a baseline, where your numbers should be better. Since you have the 1.6 rockers, I added the extra lift (0.501) and a two degrees more duration to guesstimate the effects of the rocker arms. The torque curve is flat as a table, which means this should be great on the street. You have basically 430 lb-ft of torque across the entire street driving band. HP: 366 @ 5000 RPM TQ: 437 @ 2500 RPM Graph: http://ep.com/brad/ForumPix/LenGraph.gif Table: http://ep.com/brad/ForumPix/LenTable.gif Your engine is not too far from a sim I did a while back for my Chevelle as a possible replacement if I ever need one. I ran a 400 block, and the biggest difference was I used the AFR190 head and a slightly more aggressive cam. My peak torque was the same, but it peaked at 4000 RPM, which gave me a higher HP peak (389 HP) at the expense of less bottom end torque (25 lb-ft less at 2000 RPM). I've also done some more wild combos with the 400 block, but they use roller cams and rev higher, meaning more expensive parts. But if you want 500HP/500TQ, you could do it with a single plane manifold, better heads, and a radical roller cam.
