[Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
HI! i have a 71 elcamino that wheel hops very badly, someone suggested i install coilover shocks on the back, has anyone done this? how hard is it? and is this the anwser to my problem? thanks!! Harlan
Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
I would personally try no hop bars or Southside machine lower control arms to move the IC further towards the front of the car. This usually helps aslong as you have a decent pair of shocks out back. Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
I also have a 71 El Camino, w/ coil over shocks and a front and rear sway bars. It's an automatic . The front end was completely rebuilt several years ago and now I have about 135,000 + on the Elky. Not a bit of hop , never did have any. Have driven the Elky from Mass. to Florida to Michigan. from Md. I'm running 255x15 all around ( if I remember correctly). Have jsut a little rear end sway on wet roads when I get into it from the light. But I don't let that happen too often. running 373:1 rear with shift kit. 12 bolt Not a mechanic but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Bob K w/ 71 Elky
Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
I had bad wheel hop when I used to race circle track with a-bodies. What ALWAYS fixed mine was replacing the upper rear control arms bushings. The first time Ireplaced one thing at a time with that being the last. Fixed it right up. After that car was destroyed I built another and had the same problem. Went to that first and that fixed it again. [Chevelle-list] 1968 chevelle
Any idea what the original purchase price of a basic two-door 1968 Chevelle Malibu would have been? I can't seem to find info on that. Just a ballpark would be great. Thanks again. DaveIngersoll,OntarioMy web site: http://members.tripod.com/benj30/

Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
Bob,does your 71 have coilovers or load-leveler shocks? It sure sounds like the latter. Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
Clint it's coil over for sure. What brand ? I'm presently about 300+ miles from home and have been for the past two years. I'm lucky I still remember what it looks like.
Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
Does your car still have the coil springs on the rear? Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
Clint, yes, the coil springs are there, but it's been almost 3 years since I've looked under there and from what I remember the scocks were yellow in color (can't remember brand) I hope this helps, I also think they had a coil on the shock also. This was installed about 8 years ago and as I say I haven't a good memory Bob
Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
Sounds like you have some Monroe load-levellers. True coilovers alleviate the need for the stock coil springs. [Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle
Stanley; and others on the list; I'm a refrigeration specialist. Since 1997 I have been using FR-12 to replace R-12 in the old cars. No oil change, no gasket change, "NO OIL" change. big difference to having some place chop out all your old components telling you they have to to change the oil. R-134A uses a "polyoester" oil. R-12 (and FR-12) use mineral oil. Most freons use mineral oil. I can assure you all that R-134A is junk in retrofitting your old R-12 systems. Why go through the hassle? I pull a deep vacuum and charge the system with the recommended 80 percent of the original R-12 charge.Yeah, I know no one carries FR-12 (the stores) actually you can find it if you look. Check with a refrigeration company, not a heating and cooling company. Its also cheaper than the other freons. If your in the Kansas city area bring your Chevelle by the house. I can convert you to FR-12 in 30 minutes while you watch and learn. Usual charge? $60.I use it in my service van too. This works on all Chevelles pre 90. Ever see what happens to a 134-A system that gets moisture in it? turns everything inside it to a white peanut butter substance that can't be cleaned. Gotta condemn it. (something I see allot with small commercial units that run the liquid line through the water pan to evaporate water from the evaporator). I suppose the new cars already with R-134A are okay because they were built that way. Don't forget to wash your radiator and the condenser in front of it every 6 months. a dirty condenser raises the pressure of the freon, and on a hot day it will raise quite high(250-350 lbs per square inch), thereby finding or making a leak. Is this FR-12 you're referring to more commonly known as Freeze 12? [Chevelle-list] back in the trenches...
Hi gang, Since the passing of the holidays, I have now jumped back out in the garage in high gear. I keep telling myself 90 days to Hooters nite, and I'm determined to get my '66 painted by Spring. I still have quite a bit of bodywork to complete first though- Tonite it was 19 degrees outside, but that didn't stop me one bit. I had the kerosene heater running full blast, and I was in my glory welding up those holes and fixing all those bad spots. Just wanted to share my winter excitement with you all. Hope you are doing equally well with your projects! Regards, Jim '66 Malibu '59 Corvette __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [Chevelle-list] rear coil overs
Ok, I guess i mis understood what they wanted Thanks for the correction. Monroe load levelers , yes that does sound familiar, but with my short term memory loss, anything is possible, Thank you for setting me streight. I'm still learning and this is the place to do it.
RE: [Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle
