[Chevelle-list] Introduction

2004-02-12 Thread Gunner

 Hi Folks!

Since things have slowed down a little bit I thought I'd use the "lull" to introduce myself.  I'm Mike Thompson, most folks call me "Gunner", and live in Jacksonville, Florida.  The esteemed and erstwhile Clint Hooper turned me on to this list and I've been lurking for a few days, just hanging around enjoying the banter.

I've got some Corvettes but the latest addition to the garage is a '64 Malibu convertible.  The car has been in my family since new.  It was originally bought by a cousin (he was a year older than I) in the summer of 1964 from Central Chevrolet in Atlanta.  Unfortunately Bill died Christmas of 1965 from a brain tumor.  His mom and dad, my favorite aunt and uncle, kept the car all these years, and my aunt drove it about 150,000 miles - but got so worried about having an accident she parked it in her carport in 1989, covered it up, and just let it sit.  About 2 years ago I finally talked her into selling it to me, then pretty much tore it apart, and rebuilt it.  Not that I'm all that swift as a mech, Aaron Scott of South Georgia Corvette did all the serious work, engine, tranny, rear-end, brakes, gas tank... you know the drill.  When i got it home from there a buddy of mine and I did the paint and what little body work needed doing, and did the interior at the same time.  We did out best to match the original white, and the interior is red.  It's a 283, originally a 1 BBL, now it's been bored out .030 over, little more cam, an Elelbrock 4 BBL, and dressed out with some chrome.  I also added some Torqthrust wheels to help out the image a little.  The manual tranny is "3 on the tree" as we used to say, and the top is the "Econo-lift".  Fun car and always draws some waves when I drive it.

If yer ever coming to, or through, Jacksonville (maybe the next Super Bowl?) please gimme a holler.  I'm always up to talk cars.

1968 and older are exempt.  It's not
the whole state, just the North Star Burough (Fairbanks area), and the entire
Anchorage "bowl".  The only thing my Chevelle would need to pass is the
emissions sniff part.  Newer cars have to pass safety tests, and all other
kinds of crap.  Luckily, my Pontiac Vibe is not required to have it done
until 2006, and the Bronco II I just bought had it completed in Jan of this
year.

My area is much more strict than
California.  If you can actually believe that.  It's just easier for
me to have a seasonal permit for the Chevelle, than trying to get a cat
installed, or going back to exhaust manifolds vice my headers.  Basically
if the car isn't stock, it won't pass.  And since I just dropped a new
motor in it last year, the sniffer is really strict.  I have to be down to
the same level of emmisions as a 2003 model car.  We all know that won't
happen!  ;-)  Besides, like I said, I won't drive it in the snow
anyway, and the seasonal is good from 31 MAR through 31 NOV.  The snow
starts flying here around the middle of October, and break-up is around mid
April, so I'm pretty much covered for the time I'd actually drive it.

      Seasonal Permit? They don't
grandfather the Emissions Regulations for antique vehicles in Alaska? What

Shouldn't be much damage if any. I caught the H2O/oil mix after about 20
minutes of run time. I was just warming it up to adjust the valves. It was
just a tiny bit of water. After the fix action, I'll do an oil change, and
run her for a few minutes, and then do another oil change. That should
clear it out.

I guess
that could be a good thing.  At least no one is arguing about getting
removed from the list.

On a
better (worse) note, I pulled the heads on my motor yesterday.  Turns out
the shop that built it up didn't put any Permatex on the head bolt
threads.  I'm fairly certain that that is where the water in the oil is
coming from.  Not to mention that 2 of the bolts on the passenger side were
not torqued to specs.

Anyway,
I just thought I'd share my most recent Chevelle experience.  I need to get
it all up to par by the end of March, that's when my seasonal permit begins for
Anchorage.  With all the engine mods I've done, it'll never pass the
emission test, so I just have the seasonal.  Works fine for me, since I
wouldn't drive it in the snow and ice, anyway.
