[Chevelle-list] '66 rear shoulder belt install completed

2004-04-21 Thread Krister Meister

This has been a previous topic, especially for us with small kids. The
dilemma was that after a certain weight, the 5 point harness built into the
kids car seats would no longer work and the seat would have to used with a
shoulder belt for restraint. I have successfully installed (and it looks
professional) 2 rear shoulder belts in the back of my '66 Chevelle hardtop
in addition to the existing factory lap belts. I used for each side a 90
lap belt from Andover Restraints and followed the same routing through the
rear deck and basic installation as would be found on a convertible. It
works perfect. My soon to be six year old twins are excited as they are
looking forward to another summer of cruising around in the back of the
Chevelle.

RE: [Chevelle-list] '66 rear shoulder belt install completed

2004-04-21 Thread Brad Waller
I'd love to see pictures as well. Somewhere I have pictures of my
setup. I only needed to accommodate one child, so I put the belt in the
center. I used a four point Dune Buggy harness from Crow
(http://www.crowenterprizes.com/Crow%20Enterprizes/html/products_dune_bu
ggy.html scroll to the bottom of the page). The lap belt was easy,
using the existing seat belt mounts. The shoulder portion is mounted in
the trunk (big washer, eye bolt through the trunk floor), coming up over
the back of the seat, and then threaded through the slots on the child
seat.

We usually set my daughter up in a three point version of this, crossing
the belt so that it actually works better. Instead of the right side
belt coming down her right side, it crosses to the left, on the other
side of the buckle. This is easy to do with these belts, as the
shoulder harnesses have loops that allow them to slide along the lap
belt. Because kids are so small, a four point setup really needs to be
held closer to the center line or it can slide off or to the side. I
sometimes can convince my daughter to use all four belts, and then I set
it up in an X pattern.

The automotive buckle makes it possibly more secure as I think that is
harder than a race style latch, but the 2x2 four point harness with the
shoulder straps sewn in and only one latch might be simpler and easier
to use. But for $42.50 the harness I have is a great deal and it does
work.

Flowmaster makes a nice kit for A bodies with 2.5 inch pipes and
Flowmaster
30s. The sound is not quiet if that is what you are looking for. It has a
throaty idle and gets loud above 4000 RPM. Got mine on Summit Racing for
 about $400 total.

Best practice is to match the pipe size with the volumetric efficiency
of
the engine. But I think a 2.5 inch size with crossover would work great
with
a chief 400 with street headers.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Favorite Muffler System?

He is definitly not looking for loud! He wants a nice rumble to it to
identify that its a muscle car at best and it needs to be quiet enough that
if you're on the highway, you can listen to the radio comfortly. Its
somewhat like - a nice idle, but when you jump on it, its gonna rumble.
BTW - Performace never hurts. Got anything in mind for that?

Are you after sound or performance? Loud doesn't always equal good...

A very popular setup is a 2.5 system with the x-style crossover and
Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. Muffler testing by Jim and Tom Hand has shown
that Pontiacs perform extremely well with the Super Turbos. I can't answer
your question about headers but I can forward it to some people who can...

professional) 2 rear shoulder belts in the back of my '66 Chevelle hardtop
in addition to the existing factory lap belts. I used for each side a 90
lap belt from Andover Restraints and followed the same routing through the
rear deck and basic installation as would be found on a convertible. It
works perfect. My soon to be six year old twins are excited as they are
looking forward to another summer of cruising around in the back of the
Chevelle.

I have a Flowmaster American Thunder kit on my '66 and I've been very happy
with it. It can be a bit loud for some taste, though.

The one thing I was not considering is flowmasters. I thought they were
more of a strictly mustang type thing. The mustangs running around with the
flowmasters sound real good though. Like Adam W. said - dynomax, I was
really considering them, heard they are a good company. Whatcha think?

Flowmaster makes a nice kit for A bodies with 2.5 inch pipes and
Flowmaster
30s. The sound is not quiet if that is what you are looking for. It has a
throaty idle and gets loud above 4000 RPM. Got mine on Summit Racing for
 about $400 total.

Best practice is to match the pipe size with the volumetric efficiency
of
the engine. But I think a 2.5 inch size with crossover would work great
with
a chief 400 with street headers.

My dad has a 1969 GTO with a 400 that has a mild cam in it. Him and I
were
wondering which kinds of headers and mufflers sound real good on that car?

I have a Flowmaster 17120 system on my El Camino, and like it. I haven't had
a chance to do any side-by-side comparisons though because the car is not on
the road yet. I have the original 50 series mufflers (not the Delta Flows),
which are not as loud as the 30s.

I have Dynomax on my ElCamino and they get better sounding the longer I have them. It's a deep throaty sound. People seem to like it, I get compliaments on it. They have been on her for 8 yrs now. No problems. 2 1/2 in. aluminum pipe. Bob 71 ElCamino

Whoa Up Thar Podner! :-) I have Flowmasters on my ZR-1 and couldn't be
happier with the sound, or performance. They make systems for a wide
