[Chevelle-list] Problems mounting mini starter??
I just left my car to a local shop to mount the new mini starter (I've got no lift) it proved to be even closer to the headers than the original one!!?? So they simply put the old one back until I talked to the retailer they said that the combination Chevy 402'' Hooker Competition Headers made a modification to the collector unavoidable that i have to put heat bandages around the starter the headers. I've rotated the starter to the maximum inner position then its approx 1mm from the headers! My impression was that a mini starter would give me more clearance from the headers!? Anyone recognize this? Best Regards Pelle * Chevelle Gearheads http://hem.bredband.net/gearheads/
RE: [Chevelle-list] Problems mounting mini starter??
Pelle, be careful with heat wrap on the headers. It will void most if not all mfg. warranties because it will cause rust very fast and very bad. Re: [Chevelle-list] Q: Rear coils?
The travel of the shock would prevent the boing boing effect, and although I have broken a shock or shock mount, I've never launched a spring (in my '67's). In my '64 wagon, the springs were bolted on the original 10 bolt, not on the 12 bolt I put in out of a '67. Re: [Chevelle-list] Q: Rear coils?
Pelle, The springs are limited in movement by the arc of the control arms and the length of the shocks. Put your car on a lift that will let the axle fully drop and then try to pull the coils out. I think you will find they are still under a great deal of tension and not likely to come off their perch. [Chevelle-list] Air Conditioning that ain't puffin
You'all were extremely helpful with the question about headlights that I thought that I would pose another question to the learned group of Chevelains. Hope you don't mind another so soon. Got part of the answer earlier but now looking for more tricks and fixes. In my 68 Chevelle - Air flow with the air conditioning. It don't blow...it sucks. It has good cold air but air flow is not like I am now use too with these modern systems. Just had a relay put in the line to the fan motor - that helped the fan speed at lot at lower engine speed - changed out the squirrel cage to a light weight plastic with a 325 ( I think ) CFM unit. Helped as well but more puff is needed. Got any ideas. A 600 or up CFM would be good but it is a small box and I am not really into major dollar a/c redos. But I am open to anything. It is factory with an upgraded compressor. Seems mainly just poor air speed. As it is going, since it will be a little on the miserable side in July and August her in Texas, my wrench is going to throw in a new cam, roller rockers, chrome Edlebrock intake to replace the one that is not chrome( figures), moon finned valve covers ( boy have those climbed in price since I got a set in the 60's) and I am sure a few other things that will appear on the bill that he has not told me about. He keeps looking at one of his blown 502s and bigger sitting on engine stands in the back room and saying, it could fit, cept fot a leetle hole in the hood and a big hole in my wallet. Other than the fun of trying to make something old behave like something young ( yeah, that logic probably had something to do with my recent divorce ) I'm starting to wonder if I should mount the Chevelle body on an entire Corvette running system. Especially going into summer in Texas, any help will be greatly appreciated. You'all really helped on the lights. Running with crappy lights was a serious inconvience, running without good air flow is bordering on human abuse and should not be tolerated. Thanks in advance. I hope to help with answers some day instead of just questions. Scott

It is factory with an upgraded compressor. Seems mainly just poor air speed. First check that all of the ductwork is intact and sealed tight. All of the foam seals where the ducts fit together and where they fit into the heater box probably need to be replaced--you can use hardware store weatherstrip to do this. Turn the fan on full speed and feel around the ducts box for air leaks. Also make sure that the doors are opening fully and that the vacuum pods aren't bad. You might also check to be sure the fan is spinning the right direction--if it's not wired right or if you have the wrong squirrel cage on it, the air flow will be diminished. BL

Scott, I had a similar problem with my 70. The air was cold but no blow. So this past winter I removed the air box on the inside fire wall with the heater core and found that all the seals had turned to crumbs when you touched them and that a diverter door had come disconnected from the vacuum pod. I repaired all the seals and doors and adjusted the doors and now it will all most blow your hair off your head!!! Check it out you may have a similar problem.
