[Chevelle-list] More on the alternator(?) problem

2005-03-06 Thread Dennis Kiernan
Tonight, after driving ten miles with the headlights on, I got a
voltage reading off the new battery of 12.11 with the engine running
and the lights still on. Not too good, I guess. A mechanic friend of
mine says that you shd really get a reading of about 13.5 volts.

And he also says that to know if the alternator is charging right,
you also have to read the amperage.

I would like to sell my 1972 Chevelle Project car for $500. I thought I
'd
put in on this list first before I put in a local ad or Ebay. this car is
in
Roseville MI

I started this car as a project with my 14 year old son but do not have
the
funds or the time to complete.
I would like $500 for this and have it removed from my garage.

This is a completely dis-assembled 1972 Chevelle Malibu. No motor or
trans.
I have all the parts that I took off.

The body is currently on a homemade rotisserie. The frame has been
cleaned
and completely POR15'd

Floorboards and whole underside has some rust holes and has been
sandblasted. Floorboard should be replaced to do it right.

Trunk has been cut out due to rust and I bought new replacement full
trunk
pan, support brackets and gas tank brackets from NPD which I will
include.

Bumpers and all glass are good. Quarters little have rust on lower
portions
but rest of body skin is solid.

Person taking this will need to bring a trailer to put the body and frame
on. Anyone seriously interested can contact me by email.

See below for picture of car prior to disassemble and others.

lol. My old Ford Ranger was equipped with a
"highway divider wall" finder.  On my way to work one morning, the front
and rear finders came on, which must have, by default, activated the drivers
side "Saturn SLY" finder.
It all made for a great morning
indeed.

park the car 10meter (30ft) from

I
have a friend who wants to sell an original set of fin style aluminum valve
covers for 348 and 409 CID engines. These have the offset holes, unlike most of
our 1964 and newer Chevy heads. They are used but in very good and restorable condition.
Can easily be polished up for a show car.

Nice anecdote but I think if you’ll
do a Google search on “rule of thumb”, you’ll find that not
the case.  The phrase first
appears in writing in 1692, and refers to "some method or procedure that
comes from practice or experience, without any formal basis."   ;*)

There used to be a law that prohibited a man from
beating his wife with any stick larger in diameter than his own thumb. That's
where the _expression_ "rule of thumb" comes from. Just FYI.

Not if

Seriously,
that's not a good way to do it. the aim 'em at a wall and measure the height
method is better, and uses less gas.

I’d
guess that any reputable body shop would have the means to do this and probably
any dealership as well.  For an inexpensive way out (Read: I’m cheap), use
a friend or neighbor’s car to get a starting point, i.e., see where their
headlamps show on a garage wall or garage door at both low and high beam.

I’d guess that any reputable body
shop would have the means to do this and probably any dealership as well.
For an inexpensive way out (Read: I’m cheap), use a friend or neighbor’s
car to get a starting point, i.e., see where their headlamps show on a garage
wall or garage door at both low and high beam.  Then put your car in the
same spot(s) and adjust accordingly.

I'm sure it can't hurt to lubricate it, so I will. I have seen graphite used

That the cable & housing are new, may be the problem. Even the new

for the low beams a rule of thumb is:

park the car 10meter (30ft) from a wall
at night (with the lights on :o), measure the height of the lights put a mark
on the wall at 9/10 of that height, then adjust them until the top of
the light beam is right at the mark.

[Chevelle-list] Unusual option

2005-03-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I was looking through my Assembly Instructions book for the 69 Chevelle,
and I ran across an option for "Traction Compound Dispenser". It's a round
tube mounted on the rear outter fender area within the trunk. One of the
items is "Container Asm. - Tire Traction Compound". This compound sits on
top of the tube, and then an "applicator actuator asm" sits on top of the
tube of compound.

I had never heard of such a thing. Has anyone ever seen this option on a
car?

What is the BB AL Edlebrock performer RPM head?
Does it really make a difference between Oval and Rectangle choices for the street?
Does it make a difference between Aluminum  oval or iron cast oval heads for the street?

What is a good choice for my 454?
I'll go into detail of what I've done so far if someone will help me.

Herb,

The way I did it was to set my truck on level
ground and about 2 foot away from the wall. Turning on the lights, I marked
the spots they made with masking tape; x marks the spot. Then, back up about 25
to 30 foot and adjust your lights to center into the x's. I set the lights on my
truck in the center of these marks rather than below and enjoy good illumination
with halogen lights.
