Re: [Chevelle-list] 402 BB & TH350

2005-08-03 Thread Pelle Andersson

This might explain the combo?
I think I've read somewhere that some people prefer a prepped TH350 for
racing applications
rather than a TH 400 due to the 400's power drainage.
The car was once a street/strip project in the 80's which never got to be
finished
and the guy who I bought it from just put it back together from pieces, had
it for
a while and then sold it to me...

I'm planning to go the same way but I'm leaning more towards street rather
than strip and
with some serious power under the hood I better check that 350 up!?

Thank's

A stock TH350 needs some beefing up to live a long life behind a

power drain) and shorter low gear; 2.54 vs 2.48.

Big blocks only got 4 speeds or a TH400 trans from 68-up and a 4 speed
or powerglide from 67 and down.  A TH350 may hold up for a while on a
stock big block, but if you put any kind of real torque behind it, it won't
last long.

Yes to the blade width. 3/4" would be great for your app. 1/2" would be
good. The thickness would vary with blade style. (teeth/inch, alloy of
blade, etc.)

and by blade width, I asssume you don't mean thickness but distance from
teeth to the top flat edge, yes ?

Jim, I've owned and used several larger saws in my shop, and for the money
Jet Equipment is a very good brand. Not sure how small they go, the
smallest I had was a 7"x12", now I have a 10"x18". They both were about
2/3 the price of some of the more familiar brands. The main thing to
consider is the blade width. The wider the blade, the better quality cut
and longer blade life.

do any of you have a horizontal band saw now, that you would recommend as
good enough for some one else to buy it ?

I want to build a few body rotissories and the thought of sawing all that

I'd appreciate any insight.

Hi,
The main weakness in a TH350 is the
intermediate roller clutch, I used the TH400 based replacement drum w/36 element
sprag from http://www.400raptor.com/ a little
pricey but a needed improvment. Even though I am running a small block I broke
the stock parts on the first test drive!

[Chevelle-list] GET THE FAT MAT

2005-08-03 Thread Chevellebuddy

Couple years ago I realized I had to do something about
the
noise level in my Chevelle.  While I do run quiet
mufflers, &
afterall it is a convertible we're talking about, the
headaches
I was having even with the top up were getting to
me.  I was
in the midst of totally redoing the interior when it came to
my
attention that might as well update insulation, having
replaced
everything else with new, better, more reliable or
safer.

If I'm less fatigued after a long trip, then I will also have
had
a much safer trip.  Every little bit less the car can
beat me
senseless on a long trip is good to me, you
understand?

Think about it.

The stock insulation is heavy, deteriorates quickly, &
doesn't
perform to the levels of anything by today's standards.
It is
also not visible so why not replace it with better than
origional?

I used Fat Mat.  I doubled &
even tripled in some areas where
drivetrain nose would be a problem.  Only used this
material in
places it wouldn't be seen/detected easily, ie., not under
hood,
or trunk areas.  The product is really thin and appears to
be tar
asphalt like substance on aluminum backing.  Stuff is
sticky &
seems to adhere better than some applications of Dynamat
I've
heard about.  I bought off e-Bay!  It comes in a
kit, and one box
did everything I wanted and more:   Hence the
2-3 layers I spoke
of & the results were excellent.  Drastically
reduced road noises
that seemed to invade interior before to now reasonable
levels.

It was less expensive than Dynamat.  Roller included was
okay.
I never had to acetone wash the old surface, but I did scrap it
well
and clean it with
detergent.  Backing is very sticky tar, conformed
well to different contours of the pans.  Sometimes I
worked small
peices into curves overlapping sometimes for better
coverage.

Helped to amplify the clarity of the stereo immensely,
& it made
the overal feeling in the car more secure by isolating
occupants
from a lot of vibration and heat previously coming from
drivetrain
floor & firewall,

The rest is history now thanks to Fat
Mat!

Too bad I couldn't get paid to sponsor them,
LOL.
