Re: [Chevelle-list] '67 Tail Lights

2005-10-24 Thread Brad Waller
I'm not sure if you could put other year tail lights on, but you might
be able to sand and paint the housing, or maybe break off the chrome
strips? You could skip the chrome strip on the end of the trunk, and
shave off the tabs, but then I think you might end up with this not
matching the tail light housing.

You could go to the extreme and make the tail end look like a '66 by
using the '66 tail light housing...

This is an honest understanding question.  How could coated
headers affect the break in of an engine?  The only thing the engine
cares about is exhaust back pressure.  IE, number of bends
and length of pipe run.  I am trying to understand this.  The
only thing the exhaust valves know is back pressure.  Outlet
temperature is irrelevant.

I installed a pair of the QP1000 headers on my 40 Ford coupe
streetrod back in 1992 and had a lot of problems getting them to seal at
the cylinder head. Those headers are an iron casting similar to
stock exhaust manifolds, not tube headers. I never even talked to
Sanderson but finally found a gasket set-up that cured the problem.
However,I installed a pair of their intermediate 1 7/8" BB tube headers
on my 68 El Camino w/468" and loved them. My 69 El Camino is really low
so the header clearance really needs to be taken into consideration.
Like I mentioned before,I'd try the Patriot or Hedman intermediates but
they won't clear the Z-bar. Hooker and most other full-length headers
hang down way too much so they're not an option, either.
Good luck in your search,Larry. Let us know what you decide

I never buy headers coated, only bare. That way I can correct or rework any
flaws, first. All my coating work is done by Performance Coatings of Oklahoma

is first class. Customer service is outstanding, too. Phone number is (405)

intermediates but they won't clear the Z-bar. Hooker and most other full-length
headers hang down way too much so they're not an option, either.
Good luck in your search,Larry. Let us know what you decide on.

Just curious but where did you read the complaints,Larry? Not
discounting your concerns at all but is there any header manufacturer that
satifies everyone? If so,please let me know because I'll be changing headers
in the near future. So far,the only ones I've seen that will give me the
best ground clearance and allow a manual transmission are the Sandersons.
Hedman and Patriot make intermediate headers that have good ground clearance
but won't allow a manual trans. Some people swear by Hooker or Hedman but
from my experiences,I'm not impressed at all. It seems that you really do
get what you pay for, especially when it comes to headers. Having said that,I
may end up buying a pair of Stainless Works full length units. They cost
around $600-700 but supposedly tuck up under the undercarriage very
well.

I've been doing some web research on Sanderson headers. I've found
several complaints about their headers cracking where the primaries come
out of the flange, and the alarming part is cases after case, these people
are saying they got the cold shoulder from Sanderson. Not one received

Of course I found many recommendations, including yours, but I read

Wear good

Brad, Thanks for noticing the photo and little blurb in the current HPP. I
doubt my car would do too well in a POCI national. Way too modified, driven
almost daily, and not really national material. My car will be featured in
the March 06 HPP. According to Editor Tom DeMaura that issue hits the news
stands in Mid Dec.
Like most of the folks on this list, I do shows to meet people with the same
affliction and to see what they have built. When you luck into a little
recognition it's icing on the cake. Herb and I are heading over to the
Goodguys in Charlotte this coming weekend. If any of you guys are going
please look us up.

The subject came up on the Nova list that Pontiac Tempest had a 1 year
only
front engine rear transmission linked together with a torque tube in 1963
but

dropped the design in 64. Anyone know why? I think they made the right
decision to go with a conventional rear suspension shared with other
BOP&C

products but no one knows the details.

The '61-63 Tempest was a unibody and used the rear transaxle. There
were a few minor problems with it (body flex, driveshaft noise) but
because the Tempest shared the Corvair's swing axle suspension there
were problems with marketing and the public's perception of the car, too.
Converting to a more conventional design also meant that stronger
transmissions could be used as well.

Speaking of Tempests, list member Mike Holleman and his trophy-winning
'64 are featured in one of the current Pontiac magazines...Mike, did
you win at the POCI national convention in Greenville SC this year?
Congratulations!

Brad
