[Chevelle-list] RE: rear-end swap: the time has come

2005-12-10 Thread Keith Anderson

Jim,

I believe in making things as easy on myself as possible. So, I built a
very simple rear axle dolly out of 2 x 4's and four swiveling casters. The
idea is to lower the rearend onto the dolly and then roll it out from under
the car. I used it when I rebuilt the rearend, when I sandblasted it and
painted it. I'm telling you, it's a wonderful tool. It makes removing and
reinstalling the rearend a one man job.

OK friends,

This mid-30s old man is doing his first rear-end
removal and replacement.. Any do's don'ts that anyone
would like to share BEFORE I get this thing out?

Nothing like being excited and scared $hitless at the
same time.

Good luck Jim! I know what you mean, I felt just like that building my 396.
I was real nervous until it came to life on the dyno. You're going to do a
great job.

Jim,

I like to put new bushings in the new rearend (if they are not there
already) as I have never been able to take bushings out of a rearend
without

hurting them.

Removal is quite easy,I use to remove the items like this:
parking brake cables,
Brake hose
Lower shock mounts
Drivveshaft off (put a plug or a spare yoke in the trans so it wont leak)
I like to loosen the a-arm bolts before rising the car
Raise the car under the pumpkin and put it on jackstands (at the frame)
Lower the jack a bit and take the a-arm bolts out and watch the rearend
fall

to the floor (I did it laying underneath and that’s NOT reccomended :O)
Take the a-arm and springs off and move them over to the new rearend.
And start reading backwards from here

Take it easy because its heavy

Have Fun
André

Re: [Chevelle-list] Quarter Mile Times at Sacramento Raceway

2005-12-10 Thread Clint Hooper
Ouch, 2.13's with drag radials? Drop the pressure down to around 20psi and
try some different burnout times. With some more practice, you should be able
to get those short times down in the high 1.80's-low 1.90's. That will put
you solidly in the 12's.

[Chevelle-list] LS1 and T56

2005-12-10 Thread Ringlein Thomas J Capt 40 ELRF/CC
I am planning on a huge project around July or so, and was wondering if
anyone has done an LS1 AND T56 swap in their Chevelle? I have seen
arguments that a T56 will not fit without MAJOR tunnel surgery, and then SP
ran a story where they did one with ZERO tunnel surgery. I don't want to
cut the car up, so I would rather switch transmission options then resort to
chopping up my car. I know SP makes the adapter for the reverse lock-out
to make it more low profile, and some companies make a custom tail shaft.
Questions is - is the custom tail shaft necessary, or can I just chuck in a
stock T56 with minor mods? Anyone know?

Speaking from experience, you will have to do some tunnel surgery to install
a T56. Fabricating a new tunnel top isn't that difficult,IMO.
Talk to ATS about their LSx-T56 installation kit.
http://www.t56kit.com/site.html ATS is located in Las Vegas.
