I've had good luck with the Irwin sockets that are
intended for removing nuts and blots with rounded heads. Comes in a little
carrying case that is blue and a GREAT tool to keep in your toolbox. It looks
like a socket, but the inside of it is kinda like a spiral which bites on the
head of the nut/bolt. They work great. It's kinda like an eazy-out, but for a
socket. No drilling is required, just slip it on like a socket and start
turning.

I have a question for the list that is not specifically
Chevelle related, but is chevy related nonetheless. I'm removing the
exhaust manifolds from a 1995 Chevy 454 engine to install headers. The
passenger side manifold bolts came out with the help of an impact
wrench. On the driver side, I've got all but three bolts loose. I
stopped when one of the tough bolts started to round out. Now I need to
remove the bolt, but cannot get a grip with a socket. I think Craftsman
makes something that will grip even a rounded bolt head, so I'll give that a
try, but thought I'd ask whether anyone has any advice on removing these last
three bolts. Any tips to remove the bolt that has started to
round? How about just removing the stubborn bolts? Should I heat
them first? Any tips that have worked for you in the past will be

Rob,

I bought a set of those "sockets" from Sears that
are made to bite into the head as you try to loosen the bolt. It worked great.
It works better if you can use some sort of penetration oil like PB Blaster, and
let it soak for a while, or if you can heat the area first with a torch. Careful
- and good luck.

Rob,A trick I use for tough rounded bolts is
I set a larger nut on top of the bolt and weld it to it. The larger the better
as long as you have clearance. I would use a 1/2" nut on the 3/8" exhaust bolts.
Then carefully impact it out while it is still hot from the weld.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'll try the socket and if that doesn't do the trick, then use Mike's advice and weld a nut on top of the bolt. I did have them soaking with PB Blaster before I tried to remove them. However, based on the bolts that I did remove, it does not look like any of the penetrating oil actually migrated up the thread bolts. I might try heating the areas with a torch. When heating, shold the bolt be heated or the surrounding manifold area? Thanks.

Quick update. The other insurance company (Allstate) called my dad and
asked to have medical bill sent to them, and offered him $15 a day for
loss
of use of his car. Initial estimate is $12-$14K to fix the car and TWO
MONTHS! I'm guessing the parts are not readily available...

Your parents really need to consult with a lawyer and their own insurance
company.
This is especially important if there are any medical bills. Don't get me
wrong, I'm 100% against frivolous legal action and am a staunch support of
tort reform, but they need to be extremely careful.

Firstly, anyone who buys a brand new car off the
   lot is throwing away
thousands of dollars right off the bat. That is
   money that you'll never
   get
back. And hybrids are typically much more
   expensive than
regular cars of the same size.

I will know if this is true pretty soon. My parents just had an
accident in their Prius over the weekend and I bet it will be
totaled out. When they get their settlement, we will
 know how much
value they really lose. When they bought, used Prius'
 were going
for very close to the price of new ones because demand was high.

MSRP is around $21-22K, and used prices are around $20-$21K. If
they got to drive for a year and only lost a thousand bucks, I
think that is a great deal as far as any car is concerned.

They got T-boned by a lady in a late '90s Jimmy.
   She drove away with bumper
and minor front end damage. Both doors and the center support
pillar were damaged, and the side air-bags went off.
 Neither of my
parents were injured other than sore muscles. I'm sure
 the air bag
saved my mom from major injury, as the door hit her in
 the hip, but
the airbags kept her head and shoulders from hitting the side of
the car and/or window. Their car would not work, because the
designers must have set something up to keep it from turning on
after an accident. Sort of like the fuel shut off
 switches on cars
with electric fuel pumps, this is the same thing, but for the
   electric drive.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust Manifold Bolt Removal

2006-02-07 Thread John

Try a "Star" socket. Get one just slightly
smaller and hammer on bolt head. then use impact or breaker bar. If
that doesn't work try heating them a little first and while hot apply wax to run
threads. Hope it works for you. John

  Subject: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust Manifold
  Bolt Removal
Should I heat
them first? Any tips that have worked for you in the past will be
appreiated. Thanks. Rob S.1966 ChevelleSS 396
