[Chevelle-list] 1968 side marker bezel info

2006-04-03 Thread Bill Lessenberry
To all of ya'll with 1968 SS cars, I'm doing some research into the
marker bezels, the ones that read SS396 or just 396 on your
fenders. If you wouldn't mind, send me the build date, plant ID &
sequence # (the # after the plant ID) for your car and whether it has
the SS396 or just the 396 bezels on it. I also need to know if the
bezels are original to the car or if they've been replaced. Email me
off list, I'll post the results when I know them.

Thanks a bunch!!

I would imagine not.  If a set of radiator hoses go for $1225, who
knows what you'll get for the heads.  8-)  Best of luck to

sorry to disagree with mike, but I'm of the opinion "get it safe and
drivable, then finish the paint and body" that way you can still enjoy the
car while you work on it.

It rough but looks like a great project. I suggest,
you get a plan together. Identify everything you want
and can afford to do. Write it down on paper or a
spreadsheet. It will change but at least you have a
basic plan. Here are a couple of things that
disappointed me.
My freshly powder coated frame was trashed at the body
shop.
Get any vendor to set time frames. That way the car is
not sitting for years at someones place of business.
Get the body work done first.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Horn

2006-04-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
JB
There is a single wire that runs up the steering column.  I'm not sure where exactly it enters the column.  But it ends at the directional cancelling switch, white part in this picture.
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/detail?.dir=db20&.dnm=e184.jpg&.src="">

It is connected on the back side of the brass button which you see on the left side of the picture.  The horn lock ring sits on top of that with the brass button going thruogh a hole in the lock ring assembly.  The button then rests against the brass ring on the back side of the steering wheel.

This wire and the steering wheel center provide a ground to the horn relay.    Here is a diagram for 69.   http://elcaminocentral.com/articles/wiring/712.gif
It shows the wire through the column to be black.  Which makes some sense cause its providing a ground for the relay.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Questions - Radiator Alternator

2006-04-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
 Jim
The internal regulated alternator that looks like the standard external reg alternator  is the SI model.    Easiest thing to do would go to parts store and ask to look at several of the SIs from 73-80 ish Camaro or chevelle. You want one which is "clocked" the same as your original. That means when the mount tabs are aligned similar to your stock unit, the plug in connector on the back is in the same relative position.

If you can't find one that is clocked the same, you can buy one thats close and loosen the 3 or 4 small case screws and rotate  to get the correct clocking.   Ideally if you have an alternator/starter rebuild place nearby the counter person should be able to fix you up.    And I believe stock output was 63 Amps.    So get at least that much - but as many things in life, bigger is better .

You can also consider the CS style alternator with info here:  http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html

I have the aluminum van radiator in a box in the garage, if you want pictures I can send you a link.   I bought it when they were first mentioned at Chevelle Tech, got a good deal on a used (never installed) unit. Thats been several years and it seems that since then, there are several other aluminum rads available for similar pricing.

I am closer to installing the engine in my 72.  Got a couple of questions, I have a new wiring harness for the engine.  I got a three wire internal reg connector.  I will not be running any big loads and wondered what alternator to get and what brackets will be needed if different for the standard small block ones.

Also, will need a new radiator.  Hints or suggestions??  I remember a while back of talk of an alum one that was used in a step van.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Project '68

2006-04-03 Thread Rick Schaefer
The tool john is refering to is priceless.  Its just a thin piece of strong wire.   Push the wire thru the seal from outside to inside.   Wrap each end of the wire around a short stick or even OE wrench.   One person on inside & 1 outside,  with a sawing motion, pull the wire thru the seal all the way around the glass.   You may have to go around twice to make it easier to seperate when you lift the glass out.    Try to be careful and NOT hang the wire up on the edge of the glass.  It will chip.

When its time to reinstall, use  butyl rubber ribbon sealer NOT the sealer in a tube.    The ribbon sealer may be harder to find, but it allows the window to flex independently of the  body.   The tube sealer gets hard and forces  the glass to flex with the body.  Leading to cracks.

IF you need one, the windshields are available from the aftermarket.    I've seen them at swap meets for as little as $109.    If yours is chipped/crazed from 40 years of use, the replacements are not bad.   Some say slightly thinner than OEM, but the trim on my elky fit back on fine.

Good luck

I agree about doing the body first. My "ideal" engine/transmission hasalready changed about 10 times, if I were to put the drivetrain togetherfirst I know I wouldn't be happy with it by the time I finished. (plus I
would probably never completely finish the body because I would be drivingit around!)Keith- Original Message -From: "mike f" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Chevelle-list] Questions - Radiator Alternator

2006-04-03 Thread Jim Buckingham

I am closer to
installing the engine in my 72.  Got a couple of questions, I have a new
wiring harness for the engine.  I got a three wire internal reg
connector.  I will not be running any big loads and wondered what
alternator to get and what brackets will be needed if different for the standard
small block ones.

Also, will need a
new radiator.  Hints or suggestions??  I remember a while back of talk
of an alum one that was used in a step van.

Thanks in
advance,

Jim

It rough but looks like a great project. I suggest,
you get a plan together. Identify everything you want
and can afford to do. Write it down on paper or a
spreadsheet. It will change but at least you have a
basic plan. Here are a couple of things that
disappointed me.
My freshly powder coated frame was trashed at the body
shop.
Get any vendor to set time frames. That way the car is
not sitting for years at someones place of business.
Get the body work done first.

All the trim is already off.

Anyway, here it is
