behind the back seat?

It's part of the emission control system.
The gas tank and carburetor ventingwere all connected together through a
system of vent hoses and a charcoal canister up by the driver side fender well
and the mystery canister behind the back seat. These cars were some of the
first to have closed fuel system venting. I believe 1971 was the first year.
Before that all tanks and carburetors were simply vented to the atmosphere.

All the vent hoses from the gas tank and
a hose from the charcoal canister up front converge at the mystery canister. My
guess is that since it is mounted higher than the gas tank the vapors,
theoretically, would collect in the canister and then be drawn back to the
carburetor by a vacuum hose connected to the charcoal canister up
frontwhen the engine was running. How well it really worked I don't know.

But if the tube is oval? Isn't it a tube
anymore then?

(Maybe it's a language problem here? I'm
Swedish)

Hi Mark,

Mine is an original 70 350 with a few modifications, with no internal
changes but it has a really nice sound. I have Sanderson headers leading to
2 1/2 pipes with 40 series Flowmasters and SS oval tips. I live in the
Chicago area if you are within the same area fell free to contact me and
come on over and listen or meet. I have gotten quite a few complements at
shows on how it sounds.

I have a 71 SS Convertible with a 90's 350 motor. I want to upgrade
the exhaust from the motor to the tips. I'd like it to sound more
old school and I don't want it to sound like a new Mustang if you
know what I mean. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for all the replies! I don't think I want glass packs on my
Chevelle, but, it's a thought. I'm just afraid that the Flowmasters
have become the standard sound and I would like something different.
How much does header choice affect the sound vs. muffler choice?

Thanks again,
Mark

And Chuck, I would love to take you up on your offer, if I ever make
it to Chicagoland. (I'm in L.A.)
