My 1965 Malibu SS-350 went to the muffler shop to diagnose a ticking noise in
the right muffler. When put on the rack it was obvious the ticking (while
idling in drive) can also be heard along the pipe forward of the muffler all
the way to the manifold.

I guessed, particularly since the idle is not perfect, was that I was hearing a
badly leaking exhaust valve. A compression check on the 2-4-6-8 bank shows
135, 140, 130, 140. This seems too good to have a significant valve leak.

It has a new GMPP Crate Engine with 500 miles since installation and the tick
has been there since initial startup.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

Sounds like you have a draw somewhere.  9 times out of 10 the
alternator is the culprit.  Even though it's a new one, doesn't mean it
couldn't have a bad part in it.

We’ve been doing some talk about the beehives and watching the

has been around a long time and makes great quality products.

Are you running solid rollers?

Mainly because I've always wanted a Jesel
shaft rocker system, along with the added stability at high rpm.  The cost
was also a factor.  The Jesel system was $699 compared to $417 for their
Hi-tech stainless rockers plus $240 or more for stud girdlers.  It seemed
like the Jesel SS system was the better way to go.  The only down side to
the shaft system is it's harder to adjust the valves.  The springs that
came with the AFR heads were a perfect match to my roller cam
and lightweight Schubeck lifters.

[Chevelle-list] 68 SS ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

2006-05-21 Thread dgage
A couple of days ago I installed a single wire alternator. My old one was
a stock 3 wire. Now when I go out to start my car the battery is totally
dead. When I charge it up and drive it, the gen light is on. It's very
diem and hard to see. I bought the painless wire kit which was just one
wire from the alternator to the positive side of the battery. My auto
gauge volt gauge is reading just a little under 14 volts when I'm driving
the car.So I'm thinking the battery should be getting a charge. Anybody
have any Ideas? Thanks ahead of time for any help.Dennis

Clint,

Where can you see a picture of Arizen seats? I'm looking for something
different, but comfortable for my Chevelle, but have found nothing I like.
If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate any leads you can
give!

When did you get the Arizen seats,Herb? I bought a pair of their black
leather units almost a year ago and still haven't gotten around to
installing them. Keith Anderson has a pair in his 70 El Camino and that's
where I got the idea.

Hey Herb,

I'd be very interested in all the stuff you've ended up with..Like what radiator you ended up with, which set of headers, etc. Maybe you've already done that some time back. I always enjoy learning from everybody on the list, your information would be very helpful.

Thanks,   Tom P

Re: [Chevelle-list] suspension

2006-05-21 Thread Roger Smithies

I've had them on the '66 for just over a
year.  They were part of a magazine-induced total Edelbrock suspension
upgrade.

They're certainly better than the ones that I had
... but the final result was nothing close to what the article promised.  I
don't think it's Edelbrock's fault and certainly all the pieces are fine, but it
wasn't cheap and I ended up feeling a bit suckered.

I think you're doing it smarter than me
Jimmy.  You're talking to a few people first.

I was wondering if anyone has used
Edelbrocks Inertia Active Shocks (IAS). The chevelle steers like a boat and
I'm trying to get a list of suspension parts together for next fall, so next
spring it will steer like a go-kart :O) almost. and to do
it without having to rob a bank.To all that are going to Chevellabration

Re: [Chevelle-list] Control Arm Bushings

2006-05-21 Thread Herb Lumpp

Jerry,

If you want bushings with very smooth
action, call Global West and order some of their Del-a-lum bushing for your
stock control arms.  They're a solid aluminum bushing with a nylon
sleeve and are greasable.  There's zero deflection and they move very
smoothly.  Very good stuff.

It is time to replace the original control arm bushings on my 70 SS and I
  would appreciate some help-

What type of bushings should I buy and is there a special technique or
tools required for replacing these bushings?  First time for me to
  do this.

Also, need to replace the shocks -- what do you suggest?

Car has the original LS5 engine, factory A/C and 4 speed.

Your help and experience are greatly appreciated.
