Re: [Chevelle-list] Spark plug wires
Thanks Herb. You're right, I go to Old Town about once a month and see maybe 300 cars each visit, and have only seen one other big block with that style. The one I saw looked chrome instead of polished aluminum.. I'm happy with the way the engine turned out. My Chilton's repair manual says it can be done. - With trans out some steps may not apply. 1. Disconnect battery ground 2. Remove - air cleaner, dipstick, distributor cap, radiator shroud & upper mounting panel. 3. Place heavy cardboard between radiator and fan. 4. Disconnect engine ground straps. 5. Disconnect accelerator control cable. 6. Drain oil. 7. Remove driveshaft and plug rear of trans. 8. Remove starter 9. Disconnect trans linkage 10. Disconnect speedometer cable and back-up switch 11. Manual trans - disconnect clutch cordon shaft at frame. Auto trans - disconnect cooler lines, detent cable, rod or switch wire, and modulator pipe. 12. Remove crossmember bolts. Jack up engine and move crossmember rearward. 13. Remove crossover or dual exhaust pipes. 14. Remove: flywheel housing cover, transmission, flywheel housing and throw-out bearing, front engine mounts through bolts. 15. Raise rear of engine approximated 4 inches. Support engine by hoist. 16. Raise front of engine approximately 4 inches and insert 2 in. blocks under front engine mounts. 17. Rotate crankshaft until timing mark on torsional damper is at 6:00 o'clock position. 18. [Chevelle-list] Package Tray - 66 Chevelle
Can someone tell me what the proper "look and feel" is for the area behind the rear seat back, where the speaker holes are? If I'm not mistaken, that area is covered by cardboard, or some other compressed paper or sawdust kind of thing right? What I'd like to do is make it look original, but use better materials. Any thoughts? Thanks, Larry Shouse
Re: [Chevelle-list] Oil Pan removal on a 69
Folks, I have replaced the pan gasket on a '68/454 with a 1 piece gasket without even loosening the motor mounts, and with the Turbo 400 in place. As I recall, I did remove the flex plate dust cover. I was able to drop the pan enough (1/2" or 1"?) to remove the old gasket, being careful not to drop any of it in the pan. I then worked the 1-piece over the crossmember, around the pan and up into place. Hope this helps, Fred On May, 25 2006, at 10:24 PM, Dan Mascheck wrote: I have a 454, that has a rear seal leak, and I was told by a local mechanic it was too hard to drop the pan without lifting the engine, so...we're going to pull mine, and I have new ceramic coated headers and I pray I don't nick them! Re: [Chevelle-list] Oil Pan removal on a 69
No, It is not possible to get the pan out with the motor bolted in place..even w/o a trans and flexplate attached. You can however unbolt the motor mounts and lift th eengine a few inches to get it done. You will not need to remove radiator hoses etc...but depending on exhaust you may bhave to loosen that.
