Re: [Chevelle-list] spark plugs

2006-07-25 Thread Devin
John- The question is, what year are your heads? Chevy went to the small
"peanut" plugs in about 1970. I would suggest you buy the plugs appropriate
for your heads and them gap them for the HEI, being about .050.

[Chevelle-list] Door weatherstrip

2006-07-25 Thread Kevin Riel
I put new door weatherstrip on my '68 El Camino. I bought it from Year One.
This 'Camino has been in my family since it was brand new, so I know the
history behind the door adjustments, etc.
At any rate, with the old weatherstrip (originals) the doors sealed fine.
Now with the new weatherstrip, water leaks inside in fair quantities when
washing the car, and there is a LOT of wind noise when going down the road.
I was able to move the striker posts in a bit, and that helped, but I can
still see day light when I look up between the doors and the roof. I know I
installed them correctly. Has anyone else had this problem, and are there
any fixes? Something to expand the weatherstrip to make it seal tighter?
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Chevelle-list] off-frame

2006-07-25 Thread Larry Shouse
I think you're all set. The only problem I had was the nut welded into the
cross brace in the body by the back edge of the door broke loose inside as I
was tightening the bolt from underneath. I had to cut a square shaped
opening in the floor over the nut location so I could weld the nut back
down, then close the hoe and weld it closed. I had to do that to both sides.
It really sucked having to do that on the pristine freshly reworked and
painted floor...

much easier to get the body mount bolts out with an impact gun. I know
that my compressor is probably not high enough cfm (I think it's 3.0

I do need to have some welding done on the body. There is a body mount
tower on the front left corner that is rotted around the bottom where
the mount bolts to it. I also need to have a crack in the left rear
frame rail welded. It cracked at the body mount location. Somebody
welded a piece of heavy band iron to the bottom and it is holding it
from falling off, but the crack goes all the way to the top and it is
not fixed properly. There is also a lot of rust on the frame back
there, so I would like to be able to wire wheel & Corroseal it. I
painted the trunk pans above and below this past weekend and the stuff
was extremely easy to use. I also chose Corroseal over the others
because it is water based and non-toxic.

John,

In my case, the doors were on but the interior was completely out. In
hindsight, taking the doors off would have made it much easier. If you can
take the body off in the garage or someplace like that where you can leave
it on blocks while you work on the chassis, you can take your time and do it
right. I would suggest though that if you are considering doing bodywork
under the car while the chassis is out of the way, I would make sure
whatever you use to support the 4x4s are solid and stable.

As to being light enough for two guys to lift, it wasn't a problem for two
guys to lift ONE END AT A TIME. I was quite surprised how easy the job was.

Good luck John.

2006-07-25 Thread Larry Shouse

I installed one on a '61 Buick Invicta, and the distributor did need
to be removed. You have to install the unit and then shim it to an
optimal distance. Make sure you get a full 12v to it so that you get
the benefit of the extra power. But it ran great as soon as it was
installed.

I have one on the 72 ElC that is a microswitch above the accelerator,
activate by putting foot under accel pedal and lifting up slightly, have
another one hooked up to the horn - turn key to start and push horn -
once started then the horn will activate, uses 2 double throw relays for
the circuit. Course one can always use the old standby - turn park
lites on and step on brake pedal.

Brad Waller wrote:

Grounding out the ignition is a great technique. You can use the cigarette
lighter as a hidden switch, or a switch under the carpet in a place you can
find unobtrusively and easily. Also, a great idea is to fake wire up a kill
switch in plain sight to throw any joy rider off the track.

If you have an electric fuel pump you can put in a switch for that (as
well). The great thing about an electric fuel pump kill is that they can go
a few blocks before the car dies. At that point they will likely just
abandon the car as it will be too visible in the middle of the road.

I installed an under dash powered antenna. It is stuck under the dash just
above the glove box area in my 66. My 66 is not on the road yet so I can't
comment on reception driving down the road. I can tell you that with the car
parked inside a metal building 20 miles west of Orlando, I can pick up Orlando
stations just fine on FM, and I can even get Tampa stations too, which are 80
to 90 miles away. In this building, AM reception is marginal.

I'll disconnect the pumps to see
what happens!
I'll buy an assortment of acc
pump nozzles too.
I've got a feeling that it's
running a bit too lean!?
No black smoke
puffs!

  Pelle,
The problem could be the acc pump is making it too rich (too
big a shot) or too lean (not enough). Does the exhaust shoot a puff of
black smoke when you nail the throttle? The easiest way to test this is to
disable the pump and see if the hesitation get better or worse. I've only
been studying up on QJets, so I don't know how to tell you to do this, but
if the car runs better without the pump, then it's too much of a shot, and
you should go down a shooter size and test it again.

Pelle, Check out this website for a list of really great tuning articles for both Holley and Qjet. The Author of the carb tuning papers, Lars Grimsrud is a regular on corvetteforum.com. Most of the articles are relevant to C2 and C3 corvettes, but the ones on tuning, timing, and vacuum are some of the best I've ever seen. He really knows how to troubleshoot and explain the technical stuff.http://69.253.166.197/page1/page65/page65.htmlHope this helps.--ShawnOn Jul 25, 2006, at 3:52 AM, Pelle Andersson wrote:Good idea! The distiributor is a Mallory 8548201.
The carb is a Holley 6213 (4165) 800 CFM DP with vacuum primary.
The shooters got 37 stamped on them so I assume they are 0.037?
The acc pump diaphragms are 30cc.

What distributer do you have?  Is the vacuum hooked up direct full
time or ported?  Also, what type carb; is it double pump or vacuum
secondary?  Another possible concern may be the size of the pump
"shooter" in the primary side of carb.

Hi again!

I turned the distr 180 degrees & installed i by the book!
I've adjusted the ignition back & forth & finally decided that
10 degrees was best!
The hesitation is much shorter now & the engine comes with full
power after it
picks up again, but it still hesitates :-/

I tried that & it got marginally better!
I have adjusted the fuel bowl level "by the book"
Since my dist is 180 degrees "off" I have to fix that first
so I can use a lamp to adjust the ignition!

  I'll be back

Try advancing the timing about 4 degrees.
