[Chevelle-list] Alternator Issue
Hello All, I was replacing my alternator with a new one on my 71 SS 402, and got everything hooked up and when I attempted to insert the longbolt that threads into the engine block, the bolt was too large for the new alternator hole. So i figured the the parts store gave me the wrong alternator, but after trying several different ones at several different auto supply stores, they are all identical and my bolt is too big. Siince obviously using a smaller bolt is not an option (since it threads into the engine block), should i just have the alternator hole machined out since there is no thread in that portion of the alternator? Thanks, Tabius Use your PC to make calls at very low rates
Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Issue
Hello, That Is a Option But First And Formost Make Sure You Have The Right Altenator, You Won't Be The First Nor The Last To Get The Wrong Part. Even If The Book Show"s The Same Number The Printed Number In The Book Could Be Wron. Is There A Chance To Check With Another Parts Supple Place?? Have Them Pull One Off The Shelf And See If Your Bolt Fits.I Am Willing To Bet That Something Is Wrong.Either You Don't Have The Engine You Think You Have Or The Parts Supple House Has The Number Goofed Up Something Isn't Right. You have To Check All Things Out Before Ya Mess With Enlarging The Hole As You Won't Be Able To Take It Back. And If It Isn't For Your Car How Do You Know What Is Is?? How Many Amps Etc. Just Do Alittle Investigation Is What I Am Suggesting. It Don't Cost Anything And You Will Be Sure You Got The Real McCoy!! Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust, mufflers?
Thanks for input on the exhaust,I just don't want something that sounds like a Mustang. I am looking at the flowmaster american thunder setup or the jeggs exhaust, not sure yet, thanks again
Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Issue
Thanks Kevin. I did try other supply houses and all of the alternators are identical but the hole is too small. My car is numbers matching so it is definately a 402. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Issue
If I had a matching numbers car, I would have the original alternator rebuilt. Larry (Z)
Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Issue
3/8" bolt should be standard on your car. If it is larger someone possibly stripped the whole and went one larger. Moroso makes one for the small block, right side mount, short water pump. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting
If you hve abig block I believe the part # 63840 will work on either side. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting
Not the best looking in my opinion but Alan Grove components makes brackets for a short pump big block that mounts the alternator on the passenger side. Check http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/B.B.Short_Pump.htm One mounts the alternator pretty high and may not fit under the hood and one is a low profile that mounts the alternator about mid-carb height. They are priced online at $70 and $85 respectively. If neither of those fits the bill, I have some ideas on how you could build your own very similar to this: http://dalesplace.com/misc/march/alt2.jpg http://dalesplace.com/misc/march/alt5.jpg Take some work and probably cost about the same as the ones above but itd be different. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting
Id almost bet it would put the alternator fan pulley too far out from the block to align with the water pump pulley. The two standoffs as Moroso calls them that space the alternator away from the head and block are 5 and 3 respectively. Tim- It would have come stock on the driver's side. Why are you trying to relocate it? Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting
Devin, clearance has been a mother foxtrot, due to valve covers and placement, ideally if it fell on the passenger side my worries would be answered, still sortin the puzzle out Thanks for the input - Original Message - From: Devin To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2006 8:21 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting Tim- It would have come stock on the driver's side.
