[Chevelle-list] 64 Chevelle Centerlink trivia

2007-05-18 Thread chevelle292wagon
I'm rebuilding the front end of my 64SS.
The centerlink has a bad joint so is one of the main reasons.
Checking my stash of good used centerlinks I knew I had to check for 13/16" or
7/8" diameter to ID which one I could use. (13/16" = 1st design, 7/8" = 2nd
design)
My understanding was the 13/16" used the idler and pitman arm with the smaller
hole to match smaller stud size,
and the 7/8" centerlink uses larger studs to mount to idler and pitman arms.
So now I have a 13/16" and a 7/8' link which both use the smaller sized studs.
Hadn't seen that before.
I bet that would cause a bunch of confusion at the parts store.
Just thought you'd want to know! : )

Pelle- I hadn’t seen any response to your request, so here’s my thoughts.
Keep your existing heads, open them up to 2.19/1.88 valves if you haven’t
already. Match them to the manifold and do some touch-up work in the bowls.
I’d suggest using a hydraulic roller cam with about 230 degrees of duration at
.050. This would give you a very powerful street car with manners enough that
it could be driven anywhere. I would expect torque numbers to be about 500 and
honest HP at about 375-400.

  What would you do if…

  I preferred keep my 399382071..oval...OPEN...402, 113cc chamber,
255/114 ports heads

My holley 800 cfm carb, my Edelbrock RPM Performer manifold and my Mallory HEI

  What cam would you choose?

What else do I have to do?

If I have to change the heads, what casting would you choose?

In the end I’d like to get an engine in the 400-450 bhp range!

  Is that possible?

Due to a tight budget right now I have to try to keep as much as possible

of the engine! I’m about to replace the lifters due to a faulty lifter so I
thought

I’d do a little budget “tune up” at the same time.

  Best regards Pelle
