Re: [Chevelle-list] JUNK Sanderson headers

2007-05-23 Thread Brad Waller
I had Hookers for my small block and they were too low. I ground off
the bottom bolt from the collector after a few years. I replaced them
with Hedman intermediates and they fit and worked pretty well. Plugs
are not too much trouble - for headers. I did need to swap my first set
for another due to a leak at the flange, but Hedman was great about
giving me a replacement set without first removing the old set.

Passenger side is fine on mine, just the two on the driver side. As long as
(collectively) they've been making headers for these cars, you'd think they
could extend the tube out away from the head another inch to allow a plug
socket in there. It's not like there isn't room.

Re: [Chevelle-list] JUNK Sanderson headers

2007-05-23 Thread Chuck Hanson
Hey Mike,
Try the Hedman Elite shorties. PN: 500-68618 I put 'em on my '72 "Silver
Bullet" wagon (502w/Richmond five-speed) and they worked great... cleared
the clutch linkage and gave me plenty of ground clearance. The tubing was
heavy 14-gauge and the head flange was a full 3/8-inch thick, so no warpage,
plus they come already ceramic-coated. Plug clearance, as I recall was
pretty good, but then I think with most BBC headers (regardless of the
manufacturer) it's not as problematic as with the SBC applications. Seems I
paid about $300 for the set. HTH!

Agreed. When bolting a 350 GMPP crate motor in my '65 SS the original cast
manifolds were the easiest thing to use, particularly for mounting the
original alternator and A/C compressor. When I was 21 years old and wanted
the fastest car in my neighborhood, headers would be mandatory, but since I
was 21 in 1965 it is less important now.

Re: [Chevelle-list] JUNK Sanderson headers

2007-05-23 Thread Mike Holleman
Dale, I haven't used Dougs on a small block, so I don't know. My 327 in my
Elky has Hooker super comps and the spark plugs are fairly easy. Two plugs
are behind tubes, so a wrench has to be used instead of a socket. Once I
break them loose I can get them in and out with my fingers. On a 502 I just
installed in a 66 Chevelle I used Dougs with no issues with the plugs.

2007-05-23 Thread Mike Holleman
Matt, I'm the one that recommended Doug's. I can't compare them to Hedmans
but they fit much better than Hookers and fit much tighter under the car as
well. The last two sets I used on Abodys had the lowest point above the
crossmember. The last set of Hookers I used dropped well below the
crossmember. And frankly Dougs quality was clearly better than Hookers.

In your experience, which headers have the best fit? Hedmans? Someone
else said Doug's fit good? My main concern is ground clearance.

Ill fit and poor welds. We swapped headers with them on a Nova and the

I have the BB3 intermediates. I'd say, don't bother. Just return
them.

Mike H. I have a BBC Chevelle with manual trans, and I want the
'shorty'/intermediate headers. Hedman and Sanderson are the only 2
headers I know of that will fit.Oops, make that "Hedman is the only
ones I think will will fit".

Re: [Chevelle-list] Engine noise!

2007-05-23 Thread Pelle Andersson
Honestly! I don’t know!

I bought the car 2003 & didn’t notice anything then!

But in 2004 I started to hear this noise & since then it only got

worse until #8 practically stopped working.

I was a little bit surprised to find out that the lifters where mechanical!?

Anyway, I’m changing them to hyd flats, or rollers if I can raise the money?

The damage in #8 cylinder is probably due to an old water leak?

Could not find any signs of water leaks in the head gasket so I

guess they just ignored it when they changed the head gaskets.

OUCH! How many miles, OOPS kilometers, does that cam have on it?

Sorry for not being clear, I just assumed everyone knew ;-)
I've discussed this matter back and forth at another Swedish forum &
mixed it up!
