Re: [Chevelle-list] Wheel hop.

2007-07-09 Thread Dave Benjamin
I just changed rear end gears to 336 and with the posi. I had wheel hop real
bad. I did have adjustable upper control arms and took them out 5 turns and
wheel hop was gone.

I used Lakewood bars on won car but it made the ride stiff all the time.
Good for launch, not nice for cruising.

I just installed a Tremec 5 speed into my 68 SS. I switched
from a TH 400. The problem That I have now is bad wheel hop.
I never had it with the 400. I have boxed my lower control
arms and installed urethane bushings. Plus I have airlift
drag bags in my coils and Monroe coil shocks. I'm thinking
that I might have to get a set of traction bars, but I don't
want to loose the stock look. Have any of you guys used
traction bars or adjustable upper control arms to fix a
problem like this? The only thing that I can think of, that
might have changed in this switch over is the pinion angle.
Thanks ahead of time for any helpDennis

Dale, It is an inch shorter. With all the mods for the brackets, I will
definitely take your advice and see if I can swap it for the correct year.

Thanks for the Chevellestuff link info.

Casting number 3875745N shows it to be a 66 12-bolt rear. CO is 3.31
w/metallic brakes and Positraction. It's 1 to 2 inches narrower than a
68-72 rear and should have a different spring perch arrangement; lower
coil

is larger and a plate bolts it in place as opposed to it sitting on a 'top
hat'. Honestly, it's worth more to a 66 owner looking for a good rear end
as they're getting harder and harder to find. Any 68-72 Chevrolet rear
should bolt right in.

Re: [Chevelle-list] STARTER

2007-07-09 Thread Jim H. Thompson
Do you know if the starter bolts are straight across from each other or are
they offset? Do you have the nose bracket that bolts to the front of the
starter? Are you using GM starter bolts? All of these must be correct in
order to have a smooth operating starter. E-mail me off the list and I can
send pictures of what you need.

I have a 65 Chevelle, 327 4 speed, and having trouble with the starter
engaging the flywheel. It starts most of the time, but every once in a while
the gear will hit the flywheel and not engage. We have shimmed the starter
and doesn't seem to help. We have changed the shim several trying different
settings with no change in the problem.

At first we thought it was electrical problem, changed the switch, new
cables and even redid the wiring to starter, no help. It is getting full 12
volts to starter.

Does any one have any ideas as to what I can do to fix the problem?

Thanks Darrell

Re: [Chevelle-list] Re STARTER

2007-07-09 Thread Jim H. Thompson
Try the old trick of using a screw driver or tire iron across the starter
terminal and the battery cable. If it turns over your got the juice but it
is not being delivered. The wiring and switch is not the issue of getting
the mini starter to work. Usual issue is battery cables, especially if you
have replaced the ends. Replace both battery cables and make sure the block
and your dash/ignition switch is properly grounded. All else fails do what
GM did. You need a late model alternator and a modern relay for the starter.

Got in touch with Power-Master this morning, they said the starter should
work with both the 153 &168 tooth flywheel. The tech told us that either the
battery was not at full charge or we needed a relay, like Pelle suggested.
Trying that now and will let you all know how it works. This was another
tech, decided to ask another as the first didn't seem to know.

It is a bad solenoid. 100% sure.

I had a similar/the same problem & used a relay between the starter &
ignition switch!

The problem in my case was that the ignition key switch didn't manage to
deliver

all the current needed by the starter solenoid!

Make a temporary solution with a relay & a simple button in to the coupé

to see if you have the same problem as i had?

Blå till starter= Blue to starter

Röd från tändlås= Red from ignition key switch

It's in the ignition key circuit you should do these mods.

The starter works fine and no whinnying, that part is fine. The problem is
that at times the gear on the starter comes out and hits the flywheel and
will not engage the gears on the flywheel, I didn't make myself clear. Most
of the time it has no problem, but at times it will not engage the
flywheel. At first I thought it was the solenoid but when watching from
under the car I saw the problem. Even tried beveling the gears on the
leading edge a little more on the starter, hoping it would help engage.

Thanks, Darrell

Re: [Chevelle-list] Fwd: GM 8.875 C-Clip Eliminator 9200

2007-07-09 Thread BAINEY, WALTER
I don't have specifics but I run Moser axles in my car and hope to help. It's
been 12-15yrs so things are fuzzy.

1. I don't remember thread locker but would use high heat/high strength. I
heated my retainer rings with a torch and dropped them down the shaft and into
place.

2. I used the axle shaft bolt holes for the backing plate. Did you cut the
axle housing off and remove the 4 bolt holes? If you didn't the holes /bearing
retainer will line up and work.

Any help with Moser C-Clip Eliminators?

I have sent two messages to Moser Engineering about this and haven't heard back
yet - I'm pressed for time with this customer... Here is a copy of my message
to Moser - has anyone here solved the same issue?

I have two issues with the installation of C-Clip Eliminator kit 9200 on a GM
12-bolt 8.875 axle that need to be resolved before I can continue.

1.) The instruction sheet mentioned adding threadlocker to the axle shaft where
it will be pressed to the bearing. What threadlocker do you recommend? A
Loctite 200 series threadlocker or 600 series for shaft bonding?

2.) The axle has no backing plates, there is a rear disc brake conversion that
bolts to the opposite side of the housing flange. I was hoping you have come
across this before and had spacers on hand. I included a drawing of what I
sent to our fabricator - I hope my measurements are close. Can you either
verify if my hole dimensions are correct or forward me a detailed machining
drawing of the housing end?

Thank you for your help,
:D
