Re: [Chevelle-list] 283 balancer?

2007-11-26 Thread Jim H. Thompson
That is the balancer. Small compared to newer engines.

Check this site for a run down.

I just looked at ebay there were several listed with photos.

I have modified several 283 in the past. To do as much as you have indicated
a cam swap is just a step away. I also suggest looking for a set of
reconditioned 305 heads. They are cheap but let you run unleaded gas. More
HP and better mileage.

Waste of time. Same balancer used on 283,327,307. You have a

Jim,
Thanks for the post.
The thing is, with the 283-2 barrel engines, there was no balancer.
It just has a hub to provide a place to bolt the pulleys to.
(The 4 barrel 283s, 327s, and the sixes all had actual balancers.)
Hard to imagine this seemed like a good idea to Chevrolet engineers; the
accountants probably liked it though.
Not sure what years or models had this setup.

btw: This engine only has 35,000 miles on it.(99% sure that's for real)
I'm just planning on cleaning it up, replace the valve seals, and do the
usual tune-up items.
Since the exhaust is rusty, its the right time to do the duals.
Then might as well put the 4 barrel on it too.

Re: [Chevelle-list] A new El Camino?????

2007-11-26 Thread bad66chevelle454

I thought the SSR wasnt that bad looking. The ass end for me, was the ugly
part. Could of used a little improvement. If I remember right, they were almost
as much as a Corvetteif I had that extra money lying around, I would buy a
Corvette any day over a SSR...but that's just me. I will say this new El Camino
is awesome looking and way better looking than the SSR, in my opinion.

I liked the Prowler...it was a really good idea, but they should of stuffed a
V-8 in there! I bet they would of sold a ton more if they was a V-8 in there.
Can you imagine? Plymouth Prowler with a Hemi or something like that?

They didn't sell that many 'cause they didn't build that many!

They didn't sell to many 'cause they build that many! I don't recall seeing
more than one setting on anybody's lot for any extended period of time. SSR's
still bring a good dollar setting on a used car lot and, IMO, look damn good.

Did you also think the Plymouth Prowler was a flop? They were expensive and had
great styling and also were limited in availability. But, they were under
powered with a V-6 engine. Didn't bother the sales or the resale value one bit.
I would say the major flop award from the last 5 years goes to Ford for the
Thunderbird resurrection. A bunch were built and they sat on dealers' lots for
a long time.

SSR was probably a flop becasue it was too slow, a little too expensive
(for its slowness), and not as useful as a pickup...they actually may be worth
something someday though since they didn't sell too many.

I'd buy one of the Australian Elky's iff they bring it in as an SS El Camino
with over 400 hp LS3 and 6 speed, and a functional cowl induction hood ...the
rear roof line should come back a little further though (imo)... and they need
to make sure the bed can haul 4x8 sheets of plywood (at least on top of wheel
wells).

GM oughta run with it as an El Camino, probably easy as hell to plaster the
Malibu front end on it, they are a bunch of dimwits if they don't bring back
the SS El Camino...the accesories/options they could come up with alone culd
probably get GM back in the black ...along with the new Camaro

I would not buy it as a Pontiac though... just wouldn't be something right
about it being a Pontiac

Like I said, IMO, the SSR was a flop. I think it was just a little too
expensive. I dont think it was the ugliest thing, but I didnt really go "wow
thats so cool." This new Elky I think looks way better than the SSR. Just seems
like the SSR was a rich man's play toy yah know. Be interesting to see if it
does come out though.

I’d have to disagree with the SSR being a flop.  I doubt it was ever intended
to be a bread-and-butter production unit with its convertible hard top.  Front
end looks too much like a Toyota and I’m not excited by the useless quarter
windows, but one never knows…

While it does look awesomehasnt GM learned? People dont want these
car/trucks. Look at the SSRin my opinion a total flop. That could be
because of the price, but still. I just hope GM doesnt fold under. In my
opinion, I want either a car, or a truck, not both.

I bought a Global West upper Control Arm kit from NPD.com. It included
the ball joints. At the same time I bought the 12" rotors (with 4 3/4
bolt pattern) for a 1990 1LE camaro. I used spindles & backing plate from
the caprice. If you google "tall spindle swap" you will find more info
& opinions about the swap. If you are on a budget (who isn't) you can use
the Buick rotors & calipers. And the master cylinder/booster is probably
doable, but you may have to fab a mounting bracket.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle Sheet Metal

2007-11-26 Thread Trooper
Tamaraz is a distributor just like NPD, OPG, Groundup. They do not
manufacture there own sheetmetal. Goodmark is a manufacture/distributor as
is Dynacorn. In all reality Golden Legion is probably manufacturing both of
these guys sheetmetal.
In answer to your question all these distributors are selling basically
the same parts. No one distributor has any better parts than the other.

I am looking for some sheet metal for my 1970
Chevelle. Has anyone had any experience dealing with
Tamaraz on Ebay? They've got some great prices, but I
hope the quality is as good as GoodmarkIndustries.
Their rating was +99% good

Bumpers were $146.95
Quarter Skins $159.95
Fenders $238.00

Thanks
