The number "1" is for Chevrolet Division but I don't think that
was used until 1968 when partial VINs were mandated by federal law. As
I said, I've never seen a 67 engine with the preceding "1" for the
division.

The number on the block pad sounds correct for the vehicle. I
don't know what the original 1 in front of the 7 is on the pad. Usually
just 7 for model year the a and the last 6 of the vin. You should also
have some other letters and numbers on the pad. Will tell you where
engine made, date engine made and then letters which tell what engine hp
and if built with a auto or 4 spd trans.

I recently purchased a numbers matching 67 Chevelle SS - My
question is the VIN number on the car should match exactly the engine
block number. Is that correct? The engine number is 17A152662 and the
car VIN is 138177a152662I am missing a 7 in the engine block number
versus the VIN on the body. Any thoughts from you experts?

Yea, I recently sent out an email about the site. It's a lot of fun and
there are chalenges that you can do against other car entousiasts. Like
Melanie said we have a Chevelle only tournament going on right now and need
more people in it. I takes 16 to get started and everyone votes on which car
they like better and it goes down two by two til there is one winner. Check
it out. My name on the site is Dan O. There are forums there to.

Jerry,

Not really. Unless you can find out who built the engine
last, if the block was decked and if they protected the stampings while
being decked. Otherwise all you can do is check to see if block casting
#'s match for your year, this # is stamped on the back of the block.
Check to see if block casting date relates to build date of car. This
date is stamped on rear of block on top next to where bell housing
bolts. Also your head numbers would help to tell. If they check out to
be original chances are your whole engine is. Also Intake manifold #'s.
Get on Chevelle.net and you can find all sorts of #'s and where to look.
Good Luck. I am assuming you are talking big block as a '67 SS has to
have a big block.

Jerry,

Actually it will only need to be the last 6 digits
that need to match the VIN#. You are a #'s match as long as it has not
been a restamp.
