I had my'71done by a professional, andthe sail panelsare coming loose anyhow. I wonder if GM used some sort of "miracle" adhesive back in the day ? BTW, good looking engine, Dan ! Larry I had some left over from the restoration that I performed on my Chevelle - they were original and looked a little used. I cleaned them up as well as I could but they just didn't look right so I got new material and tried to glue that on usung the 77 spray adhesive. I had to cut the darts as well to get it to form smoothly around the edges, etc. After one summer - they started to bubble a little, I ordered pre-done ones and those are in now - they are starting to bubble as well. I'll have to try something new. I think I'll have them recovered by a professional interior/trim business - maybe a thicker backer board will work. Bob, 71Chevelle SS Sbbut will be a 454 soon. Considering mine is far from original and I prefer a 69 or 70 style, the 70 would be the easy fix! The question is how much will the conversion cost. I’m dropping in a blown 468 in the car so it should move along.
Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
Bob, I didn't cover my sail panels, I bought them pre-covered. But I can offer you some advice based on my experience with adhesives. Some of this has already been said. You are going to want to use contact adhesive. The best bond would be with a liquid contact brushed on both surfaces. Porous material like fabric and board require two coats. Apply the first and allow it to dry. Apply the second and allow it to become tacky (does not stick to a clean finger) then press them together. Acid brushes work great for small areas. If you have done it right, you wont be able to pull it back off. Properly dried contact wont stick to anything but other contact coated surfaces. This will only be good for the back side as it will soak through the fabric. If you are concerned about the front side, I would recommend a 3M spray contact. Leave the fabric oversized. I would apply a coat to the board, a very light coat to the fabric and then a second coat on the board. Again wait till it becomes tacky (does not stick to a clean finger) and assemble. You might want a second set of hands because when it touches its stuck. Then you could start trimming, cutting darts, wrapping around the edges, etc. Unfortunatly the spray stuff is not going to work as well on the back side so the best results would be had by buying both the liquid and the spray. I have a quart of the liquid if its worth the road trip. Also have extra fabric if it doesn't turn out as you expected the first time. DanIt is a mistake to allow any mechanical object to realize you are in a hurry.http://www.freewebs.com/chevelles1970/ Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2008 05:04:49 -0800From: lhickmanf...@yahoo.comto: chevelle-l...@chevelles.netsubject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels I had my '71 done by a professional, and the sail panels are coming loose anyhow. With any kind of contact cement it's important to spray both sides and let it dry a few minutes until it's tacky rather than wet (the Super 77 can says to bond when it is aggressively tacky). Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away, keep it moving and don't spray too much. If your headliner material is porous it can ooze out the other side and it is hard to get off. Maybe it's a symptom of the fact that I park outdoors in all kinds of weather, but mine fall down at least once a year, meaning that the material separates from the bo ards. I have tried 3M Headliner Adhesive as well as Super 77. Maybe some day I'll just buy the pre-done ones and get it over with. [Chevelle-list] O/T Urgent Action Alert: Oppose Federal Vehicle Scrappage Program

(http://www.aol.com/?optin=new-dpicid=aolcom40vanityncid=emlcntaolcom0025) ---BeginMessage--- To view this email as a web page, please follow this link Oppose Federal Cash for Clunkers Program Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea. The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated. Contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi IMMEDIATELY To Oppose Cash for Clunkers!Call: 202/225-0100Click here to send an electronic message: http://speaker.house.gov/contact/ __ Talking Points Oppose the Use of U.S. Taxpayer Dollars for Cash for Clunkers I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a Cash for Clunkers provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the countrys air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved. Cash for Clunkers programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage. Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions. Cash for Clunkers programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money. Cash for Clunkers ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc. We hope we can count on you to reject Cash for Clunkers. [Chevelle-list] Muscle Car Review: 69SS396 Chevelle vs. Yenko
Every time I think I've cleaned out my Chevelle coffers, I turn around another item I forgot I had comes to light. Today while I was looking for something on a shelf, I came across a Sept. 25, 2007 Muscle Car Review magazine whose feature article and cover, compares a stick SS396 to a Yenko (and includes some NICE photos too). Not sure if anyone is interested in having it (it's in MINT shape). If so, I'll take any reasonable offer for it. Jim -09-RT-Challenger- H.
