i am going to have to disagree with the fact that small block 400 did not
come in Chevelles. i have seen several that have. They were available in
70-73 Chevelles. The casting number is 3951511, the same engine was also in

I have a mid '80s book called 1953-1975 Chevrolet A Book of Numbers
and it was part of The Ridgecrest Series sold by Crank'en Hope of
Blairsville PA. According to this book (which is by no means the
be-all end-all of documentation):

CZX 1970 Chevelle 400/265, 2-bbl, MT.
CRH 1970 Chevelle 400/265, 2-bbl, TH350.
CLK 1971 Chevelle 400/255, TH350, no carburetor given.
CAJ 1971 Chevelle 400/255, MT, no carburetor given.

Codes for 1972+ don't list the HP or carburetion so I've not listed them
here as I can't tell if it's the SBC 400 or BBC 396/402.

It's an interesting question. Wasn't the Chevelle 400 an actual submodel
or model sometime in the early '70s?

ever heard since it doesn't have the flapper that the other
 carbs do).

Did you remove it? My 1406s (1 on the truck, 1 parts carb) have
counterweighted secondary air valves that sit above the secondary throttle
blades. The valve is apparently sensitive to engine vacuum but
non-tuneable unless grinding metal off the weights is an option.

The engines actually displaced 402 cubic inches but the SS396 was such
a recognizable name, GM kept it. The 402 came in to being in late '69 I
think replacing the ~real~ 396 cubic inch engine.

was told today I needed a new carburetor for 70 Chevelle, (396 Big Block)
guys did not want to rebuild stock one.
Recommended a Holley 450, need to replace fuel line with flex line.

450? Or did you miss the 7 on the keypad? ;^)

What's wrong with the existing carb that it requires a rebuild?

How important is it to keep it stock? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The nice thing about carbs is that most of the time the swap can be
easily reversed in the future if necessary. Save the original line
from the pump to the carb along with the carb and any other related
pieces. If a stock appearance is needed in the future you'll have all
the stuff needed to do it.

Anyone know how or why the transmission linkage in this 64 Malibu SS, with
what appears to be a 75-77 350 Truck engine, has the Park all the way to the
back instead of to the front? Was this some kind of set up for racing?

Reverse valve body? I'm not familiar with them but have heard
that they're used in racing applications...

If the engine came out of a 75-77 Truck as you say, then this engine has
been doing some car hoping over the year. The guy I bought the car off of
pulled the engine from a 74 Nova. So lets see, the engine started out in a
75-77 Truck, and sometime there after was placed into a 74 Nova...and now in
the 64 Malibu SS Conv. Well, it's consistent, it likes the 4's...and looks
like it prefers the classic muscle cars.

Rare is the older smallblock that's spent its life in only 1 or 2
vehicles. ;^) Since this one's a truck engine perhaps it'll turn
out to be a 4-bolt block; if you decide to sell it it'd certainly
work in your favor.

Its a 454 out of a 1985 light duty truck. Its not a wild 454, rather mild.

I would think that the factory-spec'd AC plugs or a set 1 step colder
should be OK. Are you having fouling problems? Or just trouble finding
a set?

The engine casting number is 3970010, it should be a 350. I will get
the engine id code later. Thanks

Unless it's a '69 302, in which case your friend should take his luck and
go buy a bunch of lottery tickets! ;^)

454, what plugs do you use on that engine??? I have a 454 and cannt

Is it a stock 454 from a given year? If not, what type of mods have
been done? The usual approach is to start with the factory recommendation
and work colder

[Chevelle-List] Bumpers: Chrome vs. fiberglass

Need to know your views on replacing chrome bumpers with fiberglass bumpers.
Was thinking of replacing the bumpers on my 66 Chevelle with fiberglass
bumpers from Unlimited Products. The bumpers I have some dings and saw a
Chevelle with fiberglass bumpers. Thought it looked good and matches the car

Are they solid fiberglass or fiberglass-over-steel? Will they perform their
duties as well as the standard chrome-over-steel bumpers? If you're not
sacrificing protection and it's a street-driven car then it sounds like
an interesting approach. But if safety and protection would be compromised
then I'd stick with the chrome...

are they straightcut across the bottom bolts or are they cut in between
each pair of bolt holes?
if they are cut in then they are light weight casting and are prone to
warpage and cracks

Thanks, Rob. The engine they're on is 53 miles away so I can't check
them just now, but I will next weekend. It's just an ordinary 350 for
my truck but before it goes in I'd like to make a few mild improvements.

[Chevelle-List] Measuring a coil's resistance

2002-05-17 Thread Interplanet Janet

From: Michael Ishee [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 18:05:30 -0500

again here is an update. I finally got an ohm meter and measured the coil
resistance the best i could with the lack of knowledge i had about the
machine and the process in conjunction with the horrible instructions. All

Uh, *whose* horrible instructions? Since I believe I might've been the
only one who offered any instructions, is this directed at me? I really
hope you're referring to the instructions that came with the meter...ever
heard the old saw about flies, honey, and vinegar?

Don't try to start the car when measuring the resistance. Leave the ignition
off. Take 1 ohmmeter lead and touch it to the + terminal. Take the other
ohmmeter lead and touch it to the - terminal. Now each lead is in contact
with a coil terminal at the same time. Look at the ohmmeter and note the
readout. I just measured my Accel Supercoil and came up with almost 0
resistance. Unfortunately I don't have a stock coil on hand to compare
it to. If Pertronix has a website they might have some further information
about measuring a coil's resistance. IIRC when I tried their Ignitor
ignition a few years back a coil that measured less than something like
1.2 ohms needed a ballast resistor installed in the ignition circuit.

BTW, you can get a decent multimeter at Radio Shack for under $30. It's
a handy thing to have and a worthwhile investment.
