Hey guys,
This has probably been asked before, if so I missed it, but if I have
the catalytic converter taken off of my elky, will that negatively
change the performance of the engine?
Remember, 305,4bbl with all the stock emissions crap.

I guess sometimes things are better left alone.
I want original, but I like the 350 option.
Don't think any time soon the 305 will break, it's been pampered, at least
since I've had it.
I'm not much of a mechanic, so I'm a little apprehensive when it comes to
swapping power plants.
Especially with all the emissions crap they have on this thing.

I just thought maybe, just maybe, I could get some performance out of what
I already have without replacing the engine.
I want to keep it original, but I'm contemplating getting a used 350 out

What I really want is two El Caminos, or one El Camino and one Chevelle.
One built and one stock..dream on right
Thanks for the input,

I agree Craig, but you need someone who would be willing to compile the
list and archive it for anyone who requests, unless it's for trying to
sell them something. Gotta be careful of spammers getting a list like
that.
Probably should be done off list to the person getting the info, then
offered to list members only.
What the hell I'd do it if everyone just sends their name, email
address, home town and whether they deal in parts or not, off list I can
keep it here.

I had a friend that rolled his 69 Charger the day after he successfully
ran from the police the night before.
He never drove like that again because after he got his license back, he
was scared to death to drive fast anymore.
My respect goes out to the guys that have to deal with accidents on a
daily basis and can still go to work the next day. Its gotta be hard
thinking you won't make someone slow down and think, before they kill
someone else, or themselves.

[Chevelle-List] Terms

2002-07-18 Thread Paul O'Brien

Here are somer terms used that I got off a Mercury list I'm on for my
sons car.
If you don't know what they mean, its a lesson in car lingo.
If you already do, you are ahead of me by a few years.
I didn't know these a few years ago.

Shaved=the taking off of all chrome pieces, door
handles,molding, etc,etc.
Decked=the taking off of chrome on trunk
Nosed=the taking off of chrome on hood
Frenched=the recessing of different parts like headlights,
taillights, lic. plate box, ant., etc.
Chopped=taking out inches of roof pillars to drop the top down,
door frames, window glass, windsheild will all need to be cut down or
reformed.
Channeled=dropping the floor over the frame rails.
Nosed, Decked and Shaved mean the same thing. When using Shaved
to describe your car Nosed and Decked are extra words.

[Chevelle-List] Right/Privilege?

2002-07-18 Thread Paul O'Brien

When I was 16 it was a privilege to drive. My dad gave me his old car, a 65
Dodge Polara wagon with a 383 v-8,185,000 miles on it and a spun bearing. I
worked at a shoe store for $1.35 an hour and spent all of my spare time
rebuilding that engine so I could drive. I paid for my own gas, insurance,
repairs, oil. tires, etc, etc.
I thought it was a privilege to drive and I got crazy too. I was also envious
of the guys that had hot rods like brand new Chevelles with 454's in them and
55, 56, and 57 Chevy's. Now most of the kids around here have newer and better
cars than I do and don't even work. That's not only ridiculous, but bullsh-t.
It is a privilege to be able to drive, but when abused the ones that give the
privilege, have the right and responsibility to revoke that privilege.
Whether you feel right, or privilege, respect the opportunity. (getting down
off of soap box)

Re: [Chevelle-List] Stop Static

2002-07-16 Thread Paul O'Brien

I guess this isn't something you think about, Thanks
I saw a photo of a Brand new truck, burned to a crisp at a gas station/towing
place.
The guy said the owner just got it a few days before and tried filling a
plastic gas can in the back.
When he saw flames he tried to get the can out and dropped it in front of the
truck...result, a toasted truck.
The guy was lucky he didn't burn up too. Did make a mess of his jacket though.

I had stocks put on mine, they aren't loud, but they have a low throat rumble
to them that makes the 305 sound larger than it is without rapping all the way
down the street. I like Flowmasters better than glass packs, they have a great
sound. I think glass packs make an engine sound like a ricer. 2 cents worth.

[Chevelle-List] Temp?

2002-07-15 Thread Paul O'Brien

What is a normal running temp for a 305, (ya know the lawn mower
engine)?
Are the stock gauges usually correct or close?
I just got back from a hour and a half trip, running at 70 mph plus the
whole way and it seemed it never went much over 150°. It's about 90°
outside today, so it doesn't seem right.

Also stopped to see an 87 Connie, they wanted $4500.
It has 132,000 miles on her, but it seems to run and look pretty good.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Insurance woes

2002-07-09 Thread Paul O'Brien

Hey Kelly,
Try to get in touch with the Insurance Commission, they will move then.
Insurance companies in general have become so arrogant it's ridiculous.
They expect you to pay the premiums, but not expect to pay on claims.
If they don't make enough money on the stock market, they raise your
premiums to cover the losses.
We are all in the wrong business. Always being screwed and forced to
keep paying.

[Chevelle-List] 79-454 Elky

2002-07-03 Thread Paul O'Brien

Hey Guys, I just ran into a 79 El Camino Black/Silver
454,not bad overall...$1450.
The engine is out right now.
He started to work on it and had too many projects to finish.
It says it was originally from Oregon.
If you're interested let me know, I'll get you photos and a phone
number.

Re: [Chevelle-List] i love muscle cars

2002-06-27 Thread Paul O'Brien

I thought they were. I remember seeing some 69 Chevelles in the early 70's
with 307's.
My wife (then girlfriend ) wanted a yellow Chevelle with a 307, but
her dad wouldn't co-sign for a 16 year old.
She had a 65 Impala SS, convertible with a 327.

Yes, my 69
has a 307.  It's not as bad as the late 70's early 80's 305.
It can light up the tires :-).  Thats the first thing i did when i
started it up in the garage, lil powerbrake action.

Some Chevelles had 307's too didn't they?
Were they as lame as a 305?

The
305 was a V-6 six offered in GMC pick-ups, light duty dumps and school
buses from 1960 through 1967. The 305 was a big block and was bored out
to 351, 371 ... up to a 471 cu. GM also had a 702 V-12 which was two 351's
melded together. The 307 V-8 was offered in Chevy's from 1969 through 1975.

 Put
about a dozen dryer anti-static sheets in the car; under the seat, over
the visor, on the seats, etc. for a week. That really helps with strange
smells.

Some people are easily discouraged when they get an attitude from older
folks.
Maybe they would rather have them drive foreign cars and junk the
classics.
I say talk to the younger people, you might even learn something.
Now I've spent 4 cents.

[Chevelle-List] Belvidere Show

2002-06-14 Thread Paul O'Brien

There is a show at the Winnebago County Fair Grounds, Sunday in
Belvidere, Illinois.
I know some of you won't be able to make it, but others might.
If you are going to be there, let me know.
I'd like to meet some of the people on the list.
I'll have my El Camino and my son's Mercury there.
I'll try to get some photos to share.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Points or Participant Voting

2002-06-13 Thread Paul O'Brien

I think it should be different voting for different awards.
For example participant trophys should be judged by participants.
They are the ones that know most about the cars.
There should be catagories for both.
I sound like a politician.
Clique voting hurts the reputation of the show and
the hobby as well.
