payment for a 66 GTO...Never saw it again..I guess you have to find someone to
go look at the car for you...

Well not to answer your question, but I have had my stock 350 eng and my

So, I finally got to REALLY dive into disassembling my car this past
weekend

First, I gotta say that it wasn't until this weekend that I REALLY
understood what I was missing from my life. I think I'm just the kind of
guy who needs to be playing with cars to feel complete. Its not like I
really know that much. If anything, it is the fact that I *don't* know
everything that makes it so much fun.

But that's not why I'm writing this post. I want to rant a little about
what

a major clusterf**k my car is. Not that it bothers me, because I wanted a
POS to work on, but rather that the previous owner was such an idiot.

Some of the priceless examples of auto-mechanic genius:
- Apparently, the transmission kickdown cable, vacuum advance, and fuel
return lines serve no purpose, because they were unhooked completely
- Positive battery cables should be replaced with Monster Cable brand
speaker wire.
- If you don't know where a wire goes, just cap it off with a wire nut and
stick it where it won't get in the way (of the dangling kickdown cable)

The list could go on. Honestly, it doesn't bother me to have inherited
such
a mess, I'm just dumbfounded that people could be so completely careless.
If

you're not going to do it right, just don't do it at all. After this
weekend, I honestly feel like I liberated my car from certain doom.

Isn't that what having an "old car" is all about?
Having fun with it.I have the best time with my 71 convt..top down, tunes

that is a rush..can't get better than the high 13's but I don't want to break

If I wanted something that was as nice as some of

for a trophy, but, and that is a BIG BUT, it happened too many times on
Saturday to be a fluke. Those folks are driving the values up on just about
every collector car and insurance is about protecting your investment, (aren't
you glad you own a Chevelle). Of course you don't have to insure your car for
that much. It is good to have documentation (BJ actual sales) if you do want
to insure your car for the max. That's how I use their results. On a side
note, it seemed that the Street Rods were down thru Saturday. Anybody else
pick up on that or did I miss the $100K + sales?

They said tonight that they only take 1 out of 3 cars to sell at the BJ
auction so that would mean that what you see for sale is the real cream of
the crop, either rare or 100 point cars. It appears to me that some of
the custom cars that have sold ($80k) are probably very good deals. If I
owned a Z-28 or 66 Chevelle with less that 12k miles I'm not sure what
kind of money I would expect for it, but I probably would not sell it
anyway. If I had a lot of extra cash to invest in a toy I would be there

They said tonight that they only take 1 out of 3 cars to sell at the BJ
auction so that would mean that what you see for sale is the real cream of
the crop, either rare or 100 point cars. It appears to me that some of the
custom cars that have sold ($80k) are probably very good deals. If I owned
a Z-28 or 66 Chevelle with less that 12k miles I'm not sure what kind of
money I would expect for it, but I probably would not sell it anyway. If I
had a lot of extra cash to invest in a toy I would be there bidding too, but
I don't so I'm just watching TV.

I agree on the point that the market is going crazy. I thought last night
was nuts ($205k for a z28?)..but when you think about it, certain cars

like

that Z28 or the '66 Chevelle are very rare finds, so what is the real

value?

I've seen it posted here before that it's whatever someone will pay for

it.

Not sure that's the way I'd go looking for an investment, but most of

those

guys aren't worried about that. It does bother me

As far as a 340 Cuda not being a performance car, I'll assume you've never
driven a 340 car or maybe you did and it wasn't running right. It's like
saying a small block 327 Chevelle isn't one. That little motor gets up and
goes. It doesn't have to have a Hemi to be a performance/muscle car.

I really have mixed emotions about what is happening with the classic

car market. On one hand it's really great to see guys make good money

selling their cars, but I just think the rich crowd has gone way

overboard. These guys have priced the middle class blue collar car

collect/DRIVER (like me) out of the market. These guys even paid 61 Gs

for a 340 ci 71 Cuda. It was nice, but not even a performance car

except for a 4 sp. The real /hot rods/ just seemed to break even. My

65 SS will never make it to

BJ, but then again I drive it when I can, and even bang a few 6000 rpm

shifts.

  Hello -

I've just subscribed to this list, and I want to introduce myself before I
start posting.

My name is Karl and I just (as in this afternoon) purchased a 71 Chevelle.

I've had fast, (mostly) old cars all my life, starting with a 70 Camaro when
I was in high school.

I've also had a 77 Z/28 and 76 Stingray.

I had a son in 98 and the (now ex) wife pressured me into getting rid of my
Z/28 and get a minivan needless to say, things didn't last very long with
her.

Since 1998, I've been driving more "practical" vehicles and my living
arrangements weren't really conducive to having an old car to work on.

The (new) wife and I bought a house a few months ago and, thanks to the side
money I've been earning making web sites, I've been able to afford a project
car.

The Chevelle I just bought was owned by the neighbor of my babysitter. The
guy's had it since 2001 and "always planned on working on it" but never did.

It is somewhat of a basket case. There's rust in all the stereotypical
places, the interior is a mess, they tried putting on a cowl induction scoop
with pop rivets, and all sorts of small issues.

The two main problems are the roof is completely rusted underneath the vinyl
top. The whole roof will need to be transplanted. The second issue is the
steering column must be completely screwed up, because you basically have to
"hot wire" the car to drive it.

For the price I paid, I'm psyched to have it. The point, to me, of owning
an old car is to work on it. I'm not the kind of guy who wants to have the
car already done for him. To me, the joy comes from knowing I'm eventually
going to touch every nut and bolt on this car.

I plan on doing the "resto-rod" thing - making it look mostly stock, except
for a few upgrades to the interior such as seats and dash stuff.

All best are off for the drive train, suspension, and breaks though.

Anyway, enough babbling from me. I'm very glad to have found this list.

Last, can someone tell me something about my car from this VIN?

Herb,

I saw a neat item on a friends Harley. He doesnt use his bike much so he
also keep a

tender on it while parked.
He uses a small connector like the ones or RC cars, one on the bike and one
on the

tender, and then he just plugs it in.
You could put it where you want and avoid to pop the hood all the time.

André

 Larry,

I have an alarm on my Vette because at one time it was my daily
transportation. Now that I don't drive it too often, the alarm drains the
battery so I have to keep a battery tender hooked up all the time. It's a
pita and I don't think it would stop a thief if he really wanted it. I
guess since it's a '76 it's probably pretty safe! g

Hi Jim: I've heard what everyone said I agree with
  most. I've got a pretty healthy 327 in a 65 SSwith a M-20 4 speed,
  a 12 bolt 3.73 gears. I'm runningCoker 75 series redline
tires about 28 inches high. It's great in town, the suburbs
back roads. On the highway at 60-65 I'm taching 3000-3200 rpms
people are blowing me off the road. I try to drive non-highway as much
as possible. I also drag race it a few time a season. The future
  mayinclude a 5 or 6 speed. It's mainly a show car a
cruiser. The max its been on the road is 100 miles one way. The
Flowmasters are singing all the way!! It's noisy!

If you plan little or no highway use will be driving mostly in town
around, with an occasional trip to the drags, you could get away with
the 4.56. If you plan to cruise put it on the road stay
away. Go with the 3.55-3.73. The 3.73 is about the
mostversitile and that'sstretching it. Use the ratio that
will best fit what your plans arefor the car. Be realistic.
Witha 4.56 you may have to trailer to some events as necessary. I
enjoy driving my car am not interested in burning out my engine
prematurely. Those 5 6 speeds with the .8 .6 gears are
looking better every year!! Good luck with your decision Happy
  Cruising!!!

don't you? 4th gear is 1:1 just like 3rd is 1:1 in the

go on a cruise and not have the engine whine that high at cruise speed. But your
car,ya can do what floats your boat.

I agree. I've got 3.42s and I'm changing them out this
  winter for 4.10s...

Yep I know that, just think the 3:73's will give
it more zip through first and second, that is if I still want to
race.
Thanks

You do realize that a 4 speed will not change the engine
speed don't you? 4th gear is 1:1 just like 3rd is 1:1 in the
automatic. You'll have to get a 5 speed to have an
  overdrive.BillLAt 08:29 AM 11/2/2005, you wrote:
  I was
using the stock 3:21..350 with auto..then I had the engine built to
around 425 hp and installed a 3:73 so I could drag race every so
often..I was thinking of going back to the 3:21 cuz I get tired of
hearing the engine whine but now I am thinking of switching to a 4 sp so
the gears I have in it will be fine.Ron

Re: [Chevelle-list] Winter project

2005-11-01 Thread Ron Menchey

Looks like a good project Dave.On your website, the
70 you painted, what color red is it? I am redoing my 71 convt this winter and am
looking at reds...I am leaning towards a 05 Corvette metallic red with lite gray
real flame ghost flames. Also I am collecting parts to switch the auto over to a
4 speed.

Re: [Chevelle-list] dakota digital

2005-10-22 Thread Ron Menchey

I have had Dokota digital gages in my 39 chev
street rod for over 15 yrs with no problems...only thing is..I am getting tired
of them and I think I am going to go back to a real nice set of gages...But I
also think if they make a set for your 60 or my 71 to fit in the original dash
,they might look nice.

Sweet,I have two quotes for the paint on my 71
convt.both have bee right around $4500,I am going with the second guy cuz he is
going to strip it down to bare metal and because he has a chevelle.I am going
with a 05 Corvette red with silver ghost flames.
A little info on my 71
71 Malibu convt
350 cu in
auto
bench seats
front disc brakes
posi rear

I was told that it is a low numbered car,not many
with those options, don't know if it is true or not
I had the engine built,now has around 425 hp,new
gears and posi unit, bucket seats, old style cragars, the bumpers were not too good
so I painted them, but am getting new ones for this repaint.I am also collecting
the parts to change the auto to a 4 sp...I am tired of not having a
4sp.
Well thats about it.Great site, lots of good
info.
