Re: [Chevelle-list] Wandering Malibu

2010-03-27 Thread Terry S Hodges
Insufficient caster causes wander, road shock, and a light feeling in
the steering. Excessive positive caster can cause hard steering,
shimmy, and tire wear in extreme cases. Unequal caster causes the
vehicle to pull or lead toward the side having the least positive
caster.

A small amount of toe-in is required for optimum vehicle handling and
to prevent steering "wander".

Hey Dennis,

A friend of mine had the same problem with his 66 Malibu after we left the Nashville Speedway last year at Chevellabration. We stopped  and ate at the Sonic, thirty minutes later, the car wouldn't start. He believes now he has located the problem with it being the resistor wire that he is using to fire his HEI coil. He isn't sure yet, but before he heads out Thursday from Louisville, he is going to replace this wire. Just my two cents.

I would contact YEARONE. Since they just recently put out the "BURT REYNOLDS" Edition Trans Am..They just migt be the one's to buy something like this to. Send an EMAIL to a Trans AM of America Club. There has to be someone out there to buy it. If you had a GM box that once contained a Stripe kit for a Chevelle, don't you think someone here  on the list would like it to put it in their trunk for part of their display?

Just my two cents !

Re: [Chevelle-list] fuel gauge

2008-03-22 Thread Terry S Hodges

Here is a pic of a Temp Gauge from lectric limited Faq pagesI couldn't find a fuel gauge. I usually do my searches by Googling IMAGES instead of web searches. That way you can see what your looking for !

Below is a diagram of how a typical temperature gauge should be wired.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Electric fans

2008-03-18 Thread Terry S Hodges

Thanks Mike, I was wondering how accurate the temp sensor from the manifold would be versus the temp sensor in the head. Then I read the article on Ron Francis's Wiring webpage and it made me wonder what kind of variance there would be from advertised verses actual. I know I could have call each and every dealer out there, but getting "RETAIL" info versus "REAL-TIME" info helps me out a lot. Thanks again for those who responded.

I think there was one response where one individual uses a sensor probe in the radiator. Is there any variance between when your fans click on based on your temp gauges verses the advertised kickon/kickoff temp of the probe ??

Just curious. I hate doing things twice. I know when I get to Nashville and start looking around, I am going to see something I had wished I had done.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Electric fans

2008-03-17 Thread Terry S Hodges

Thanks Herb, What temp sensor do you have installed in the manifold ? On at 195, off 175 etc ? Did you have to compensate the 15 degrees variance as stated on the Ron Francis Wiring webpage ? I tried to look at your photos but you have  to log in to view.

Thanks again

Re: [Chevelle-list] Electric fans

2008-03-17 Thread Terry S Hodges

I appreciate your response. What I am looking for what other people are doing that do have electric fans. Sensor probe in Radiator VS Temp. Sensor in Manifold VS Temp Sensor in Heads (working around headers) also if anyone uses the Variable Speed Controllers offered by SPAL and other companies that would control the seperately Dual Fan setups based on Temp. What I would really like to know if anyone has the Temp gauge in the manifold if they experience the 15 degree variance that Ron Francis Wiring states on their webpage. I know if you wrap the sending unit in teflon tape you will get a soft reading. Just wanted to know of everyone's setup.

Thanks again

[Chevelle-list] Electric fans

2008-03-17 Thread Terry S Hodges

I  need some advice on choosing an electric fan. I am still running the old style Clutch set up.

I have 1968 Chevelle with 454\425 GM Crate 4 speed. No accessories to drain my Powermaster Alternator #8002 Idle 75 amps, output Hwy speed 102 amps. I am updating the Forward lamp harness and engine harness so I can switch from the 1 wire setup to a 12CSI hook up that the new harness incorporates. I have also  ordered a bunch of stuff from MadElectrical to assist in getting things hooked up with new headlights and other parts.(relays, headlight relays etc)

My questions is this. I want to install a Dual 13-inch fan setup. What I have been reading is that these fans draw about 40 amps idling. Does anyone on the list use any of the Variable speed Controllers that are offered. If you use a temp sensor, is it plugged into your cylinder head, or the intake manifold. I was reading  on Ron Francis's webpage that if you use the Intake Manifold fitting, you have to allow for a 15 degree difference. I really don't want to change the upper radiator hose outlet from the Intake, and the only other option is to use the probes that slide between the fins. I will be running 235\60r15 tires, with 3:55 gears., I usually drive my car to Chevellabration from Louisville Ky with no problems of overheating  while driving or sitting still.(not even during the country cruises)...I just feel like making a change.

If any of  you guys use the various setups, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance

you can go to the post office and see if it is legitimate or not when they run
