RE: [Chevelle-List] 6 cyl. motors

2002-05-13 Thread Mabs, Kenneth

one of my friends from the suburbs of chicago runs a v6 under the hood in
his 86 camaro. he has set national records with this engine and is one of
the fastest 6 cyl. around. he recently ran 8.89 at 155.6 in the 1/4 mile.
whoever said "nothing can replace cubic inches" i say go for it. its neat
to see the looks on peoples face when they see a six under his hood

Hey, my friend did the same thing with his 56 Chevy. Sounds
like a small block and runs with the best of them!!Little weird whe you
pop the hood and see a 6!! but hey, if everyone ran the same thing, it'd be

I remember some 6 cyl. Pontiacs that were pretty quick years ago.
I don't see anything wrong with it. I personally wouldn't do it, but

RE: [Chevelle-List] 6 cyl. motors

2002-05-13 Thread Robert B. King

In the early seventies, I used to watch this 67 deuce at the drag strip. He
was running H/MP (modified production) at the time. The car was a little 2
door sedan with a 292 truck six, trips on a tunnel ram, cam, headers and
some compression. It sounded a little bit odd after hearing tons of open
header big-block cars, but the damn thing always made the trip down the
quarter in the very low twelve second range with the front wheels of the
ground in two gears. I saw him run an 11.97 once. The car was
appropriately named Preparation H.

This sounds like a perfect project to put a turbocharger / mini-blower on!
I think a turbocharger for a automatic car, and maybe a blower for a stick
shift. Another fun idea would be to go with three Weber side drafts. You
know that with a IR (Independent Runner) manifold that the throttle response
is supposed to be fantastic. I know this seems hard to believe but, this
combo is known for its good low to mid-range torque. Three two barrels
would look VERY cool, and I think with a I-6 it solves a difficult
manifolding problem. See lots of people want to slap on that Holley four
barrel, like the V8 guys. The old single four barrel works great on a V6,
or a V8, but the distance between the cylinders is much different on a I-6.
If you try to run a single carb, it is a long distance to cylinders one and
six, and a very short distance to cylinders three and four. The answer is
multiple carbs, a warmed up rod cam, and some ten to one pistons!

I think you can still get parts for a 250
& make pretty decent hp but am not sure about the 194. I doubt you
could make 250hp & keep it streetable/dependable though.  I think a
healthy 6 would be different & pretty cool though.

GM was experimenting with turbocharging on the straight six in the early
1970's and was making good power with it. With today's technology a turbo and
intercooler can make a lot of HP. Pontiac had an overhead cam straight six
with a 4 BB carb on it. It made a good handling car because of the reduced
weight over the front wheels.

Hey!

I have a 250 ci 6-cyl in my 67. It still has the Powerglide, though,
so it's not fast by any means. A trans swap is in the works, but
I've done some things to the engine already. It's my daily driver.

Clifford Performance seems to be the easiest place to get parts, and
their website (www.cliffordperformance.com) is filled with useful
stuff. They have a series of buildups using their parts from
magazines, and they say 1 horse per cube is reachable.
I bought a 4-bbl intake and headers from them. I'm running an
Edelbrock 1404 carb, and have no complaints with it. The Clifford
headers seem really long, however, and if your front end is sagging
or lowered you might have header-speedbump issues. A
Crane-points-replacement box, coil, and MSD box were all good
investments too.

Next is a cam swap. :-)

Does this help?

Dave.

One of the biggest names I remember in 6-cyl horsepower is Clifford
Performance - http://www.cliffordperformance.com/
Everything you need to make a 6-cyl come alive to the tune of (their words) a
40% horsepower gain at the rear wheels.  The only reference I have is the
190hp 230cid for 67 so I sort of doubt 250hp is reasonable with a 194 but
it could still be a sleeper.

BTW, I normally pass on Shock Wave intro pages but this one is really
nice.
