[Chevelle-List] Another VIN Question
Thanks to all who helped with the last question. Ended up the guy had really lost the cowl tag... easy replacement. I just received another email from another Chevelle owner..(please see below). Thanks in advance for your help. Donnie Gates --- HI, My name is Bill, and I recently bought a '70 SS clone from a guy I have known for 25 years (he had the car that long too). When I bought the car, it never occured to me to check the VIN tag in the dash. I have now discovered that the tag is gone. He said the tag was lost when the car was in the body shop, and they replaced the windshield. I have since learned that many people have problems with the tag when they replace the windshield. Nevertheless, I am now trying to verify the car to the title. It is a Canadian car (according to the title VIN, which does not have an alpha charachter in it). Anyway, I have looked in the places suggested by local law enforcement veterans, but I have not had any luck. I figured that perhaps someone in your club who has done a frame-off has laid eyes on such "hidden" numbers, and could direct me. It would be helpful to have an exact location and number size. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Donnie, Ask the gentleman if he has removed the heater core cover (hopefully not an air car !) to check for the numbers ? How about the numbers on the engine pad - the last six (?) numbers of the VIN match the title ? Also, if it is a Canadian Chevelle, I believe they (GM of Canada) can supply information as to how the car was originally ordered. Not sure how much that will help since it was cloned as an "SS". If you need to find out about Canadian Cars check with The Canadian Classic Chevelle Beaumonts. They searched out my 66 and the 69 I just finished.They will get back to you. Bill Call General Motors Communication center in Oshawa Ontario,@1-800 263-3777 and ask for the Historical data department.The fellow who does all the research on Canadian built cars,and Americanbuilt cars that sold in Canada brand new is George Zapora.you give him the Vin number and your Visa number and if your car was built here ,in about four weeks after you talk to him you are one happy guy when the post man delivers a big envelope to you.It is amazing the stuff they have kept on old micro feesh on our cars.The last time I had one done it cost about $45 Canadian,so about $30 US.If the 1-800 number does not work in the States then ask the long Distant Operator to give you General motors of Canada Limited on 1908 Colonel Sam Drive,Oshawa Ontario's phone Number. Too bad the US didn't see fit to keep track of all the Chevelle related info...they could be making a fortune sending out the info to collectors and restorers..The last year they counted Super Sport Elkys was in 197812,027 of them [the just stripes and wheels models, yes, but they did have the same motor as the Z/28 (LM-1...170 hp) available].
