Re: [Chevelle-list] coil springs continued

2008-06-14 Thread Jim H. Thompson
The holes are there to drain rain water. But people use them for reference.
Use the indentation. I have been told that the springs will walk and place
themselves once you start driving. Try just placing the spring in there
without the shock and raising the lower arm with a jack. Keep it loose
enough that you can spin the spring around by hand and see if it clicks in
place.

there is an indentation in the lower control arm that the end of the coil
spring would fit in nicely but it would cover both weep holes. today I
looked in the assembly manual (that I couldnt find yesterday) and it said
that one hole has to be left uncovered/open and in the illustration it looks
like the end of the spring falls inbetween the two holes. does anyone have
practicle experience with this. is it possible the indentation in the
control arm has nothing to do with the spring ? I'm tempted to let the
spring sit in the indentation and drill two more holes on the opposit side

Why go out on your own?- When the engineers who wrote the book & built
the car want the end of the spring between the 2 holes. I installed mine IAW
the Assembly Manual & haven't had a problem.

If you are installing a special application spring, you might want to call
the vender/manufacturer and hear what they say, otherwise with a stock
replacement spring I'd install it IAW the Assembly Manual.

Hello:you can take a long piece of threaded rod, what ever size will fit
through the upper hole where the shock would mount, this is usually at least
1/2"threaded rod can work.Usuing a plate that will stop against the lower
control arm,you can use the threaded rod to act as your spring
installer. This works really good and is very safe.Always inspect the
threaded rod for stress before using it again for safety sake.

If any doubt about your compressor, it wouldn't hurt to use a safety chain
as well.
When I was gathering info about doing mine, many guys suggested it.
I'd rather be lucky than good any day. Thank God I was lucky.

you should be very careful and compress the spring
shorter than the what it takes to thread the bottom
spindle bolt and nut on. Then you un wind the
compressor. Are the springs the same as the old ones?

2006-12-03 Thread Ron Griffith
Having rebuilt the chassis on my '71 El Camino while it was stripped for a
frame-off, I wasn't looking forward to doing the same on the '67 convertible
I'm working on. On the 70 mile drive home from the powder coater I had an
epiphany. I simply backed the trailer into my shop, loosened the ratcheting
straps that were holding the frame on the trailer, jacked the trailer up,
placed jack stands under it, then reinstalled the ratcheting cables. The frame
was now held down with straps and I was able to jack the control arms and rear
end up an down just as I would've with the body on and the engine installed.
Handy working height, too. I found that it was easier to do without the spring
compressor, although I did throw a chain around the springs for safety sake.
Worked Great!

Hi Mack,

The springs are lowered and about 4 years old. They have a poly (?) coating
that is still intact. The reason I took them out is because I have a Global
West negative roll front suspension and it requires a specific spring. The
GW stuff combined with the weight of a big block made the front end just a
little bit too low.

I'm sure with a small block and a standard front suspension setup they
should work just fine.
