[Chevelle-List] Fan clutch or not

2003-03-06 Thread Keith Cooper

My 71 Chevelle is overheating in this Bike Week traffic
here in the nice warm sunny Daytona Beach. The temperature is going to 200
degrees in stop and go traffic. The engine block thermostat is working. It come
on right at 180 degrees. I am thinking about changing the fan blade clutch. They
come with and without the thermo unit on fan clutches. Should I get a fan clutch
with or without the thermostat unit??

Keith,

If 200 is all it gets to, I wouldn't be too worried
about it. In stop and go, 200 is not bad at all, if it
was creeping up to 215 on a regular basis I might
think about changing something, if 200 is
uncomfortable for you, try a lower thermostat first, a
lot less expensive!

200 degrees is nothing to worry about. When it starts going over 215-220, then be worried. My overheating point is 230. My 454 runs at 185-190 in the heat humidity of NJ. It has a 180 stat and a stock 7 blade clutch fan with a stock 4 core radiator. My 350 in my 86 Cutlass is the same way.

If the stat is already a 180 which is may or may not be, I can only go down
to a 160 right?? There is nothing between a 160 and a 180 stat is there??
I have been told that a 160 stat would never close and would alway be open
which would cause it to over heat. The water would never stay in the
radiator enough to cool?

No Keith.. There is no step between 180 and 160 that I know of... And you
right about the 160 just staying OPEN
and not letting the Radiator. time to Cool the fluids...
If infact.on a hot Day in Traffic and you only see 200 Deg. F.. Shezz I
don't think I would do anthing.. Just make sure the Rad is clean and flowing
free.
the cluth on the fan ( if you have one) is operational.. and as a LAST
resort and you car is not a 100% orginail type car.. get a High Flow Water
Pump.
like Steward of Weieand . This exchanges coolent faster thus closes the
stat. faster = more time to STAY in the radiator...

RE: [Chevelle-List] Fan clutch or not

2003-03-06 Thread Dale McIntosh
Check out http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cooling-system8.htm. There are
a lot of urban legends, old wifes tales, etc. about what a thermostat
does, how it does it, and why not elimitate one altogether (works
sometimes but not a good idea). The thermostat's job is to HEAT the
engine, not cool it. Once the DESIRED operating temp is reached (via
the rating of the stat) it's simply taking up space (so-to-speak).
You're correct about the temperatures available, for our cars there are
160, 180, and 192/195 (depending on who makes it).

I put a PRC aluminum radiator in my 67 SS to help cool it down. With
the standard 3-core w/shroud and 160 stat, it ran 180-190 on the
highway. Stopping at a toll both, the temp would climb very quickly to
210-220 range. Obviously not enough air flow or coolant flow. With the
aluminum radiator (same stat and no shroud) and Vintage Air (off) it
runs 150-160 on the highway and slowly creeps up to 190-200 at a toll
both. With the air on, it'll run 170-180 on the highway and creep up to
200-220 at a toll both. With the old raditor, it would take some time
to cool back down. With the aluminum one, it cools back down to
'normal' temp in a few car lengths.

If a 160 stat never closed (as you've been told), the coolant would
continue to flow normally. Unless you've got a high pressure water
pump, you're not going to be forcing the water through the radiator
faster than it's capability to cool it. Naturally, if you don't have
the capacity or capability to cool the water (system clogged, radiator
too small, etc.) it's not going to run cool with any degree stat.

Do you think I need to get the one with the thermal control which is like
stock or the non-thermal control which will be engaged always?

I like to use a clutch fan to reduce noise. I usually use a 5 blade fan.
Never had a problem. It's important to either: a) have a shroud or
b)make
sure the fan is relatively close to the rad to get the pull affect of air
 through the cores.

I would try a NEW clutch. Just my 2 cents worth.

Keith, I would go with the thermal. The non-thermal
is constant but only turns at 60 to 70% of you water pump pulley speed. How
about a bigger fan? 5 or 6 blade? You could also go with a bigger water pump.
Bigger as in more coolant being pumped. Like a Flow-Kooler. There a several
around that look stock. Nothing worse than having to worry about overheating in
traffic oron acruise.

Well, the fan clutch off the 77 truck stopped the noise,
but now the car overheats at idle. The car will run 200 degree if you let it
sit at idle. When you get going down the road it drops to 185. I guess that I
need to go buy a new fan clutch. I can buy a new clutch without or with
the thermal control. Without the thermal control, the fan will run all the
time. What do you think, with or without the thermal?

I use the thermal ones. They come on when they need to (providing they are
working properly), and release at highway speeds, saving fuel and preventing
HP loss from a solid fan.
