Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
I had my'71done by a professional, andthe sail panelsare coming loose anyhow. I wonder if GM used some sort of "miracle" adhesive back in the day ? BTW, good looking engine, Dan ! Larry I had some left over from the restoration that I performed on my Chevelle - they were original and looked a little used. I cleaned them up as well as I could but they just didn't look right so I got new material and tried to glue that on usung the 77 spray adhesive. I had to cut the darts as well to get it to form smoothly around the edges, etc. After one summer - they started to bubble a little, I ordered pre-done ones and those are in now - they are starting to bubble as well. I'll have to try something new. I think I'll have them recovered by a professional interior/trim business - maybe a thicker backer board will work. Bob, 71Chevelle SS Sbbut will be a 454 soon. Considering mine is far from original and I prefer a 69 or 70 style, the 70 would be the easy fix! The question is how much will the conversion cost. I’m dropping in a blown 468 in the car so it should move along.
Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
Bob, I didn't cover my sail panels, I bought them pre-covered. But I can offer you some advice based on my experience with adhesives. Some of this has already been said. You are going to want to use contact adhesive. The best bond would be with a liquid contact brushed on both surfaces. Porous material like fabric and board require two coats. Apply the first and allow it to dry. Apply the second and allow it to become tacky (does not stick to a clean finger) then press them together. Acid brushes work great for small areas. If you have done it right, you wont be able to pull it back off. Properly dried contact wont stick to anything but other contact coated surfaces. This will only be good for the back side as it will soak through the fabric. If you are concerned about the front side, I would recommend a 3M spray contact. Leave the fabric oversized. I would apply a coat to the board, a very light coat to the fabric and then a second coat on the board. Again wait till it becomes tacky (does not stick to a clean finger) and assemble. You might want a second set of hands because when it touches its stuck. Then you could start trimming, cutting darts, wrapping around the edges, etc. Unfortunatly the spray stuff is not going to work as well on the back side so the best results would be had by buying both the liquid and the spray. I have a quart of the liquid if its worth the road trip. Also have extra fabric if it doesn't turn out as you expected the first time. Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
I bought my sails pre covered also. however I thought I was supposed to fold the material over the edges and glue it. The original panels I took off were glued. So after doing this I thought I was ready to install. It was then that I realized the panels were not the same length as the originals. Now Iam not sure what to do. The panels I bought were from Legendary Auto Interiorsand they are not long enough to go from the rear side window molding to the bottom corner of the rear window. It leaves me with a void at the rear window, just before the molding. Any body have any ideas. And thank you all for all your help. Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
is there enough material there to add a little piece of cardboard the same thickness and then wrap the material around it?? maybe you could put some masking tape over the seam on the front before you put the material over it?? Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
That might work on the other one. The one that I allready trimmed and glued I dont think there is enough material. I'll try it on the next one though. [Chevelle-List] Sail Panels
In the process of ordering new sail panels from John for my 69SS. Todays new car sail panels are usually plastic. I take it that my 69 panels are hard board cover by headliner material. The ones present on my car now are warped and unattached. Can someone tell me how they are attached, it there is molding that goes around them? If anyone could forward me a photo of theirs I would be grateful. Craig
Re: [Chevelle-List] Sail Panels
Craig if you are talking about the back headliner pieces the fabric is tucked under the back window rubber and the side window. There is also a push in clip in the center of the panel. It is the same style that holds the door panels on. RE: [Chevelle-List] Sail Panels
It is the board in the C-pillar under the headliner. You can see a picture of a pair of them at: http://www.oldcarnetwork.com/Merchant2/graphics/gmparts/SPB6465.jpg John Nasta Old Car Network http://oldcarnetwork.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Don Sent: Friday, February 22, 2002 5:16 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Sail Panels I know this is a stupid question but... what is a sail panel?
