John,
Thank you for the reply and I really like your 70 chevelle. I think I have
finally made up my mind to go with the 3.31's. I would trade a really hard
launch for being able to drive it down the interstate to work and the
combination sounds really good.

Thanks again
Ryan

Ryan, I am running 3.31 gears in my 12 bolt behind a TH 400. The final
drive is 1:1 and I have 27" tall tires, 255/60 15's, and I am turning up
around 2800 at 65 MPH. The car launches real well and I can smoke a tire
or two when I want to. Just my input.

Have any of you guys rebuilt your 12 bolt carriers? What kit did you
buy and where did you buy it? Are you happy with the kit? I've seen a
couple kit that replace the clutches and that is about it. Shouldnt
more of the guts be replaced while you have it apart?
Any help would be appreciated.

Also...anybody out there running 3.55 ring and pinion in the rearend? I
think that is the set that I am going to buy but wanted some feed back
on them. A buddy has 3.73 and it winds out on the interstate. I know
tire size, tranny, etc... all make a difference but just wanted some
quick ideas.

Thanks
Ryan

Ryan, with 25 ¾" high tires I would go with 3:55 gears, your tires are not very
tall so you don't want a 3:73 gear!!! A 26" tall tire with 3:55 is about the
same as 28" tall tire with 3:73!! Just my 2 cents!

The tires I am using are on 15" rims and are 25 3/4" diameter. Unfortunately,
to get me back on the road for now I am just going to plug the Saginaw 4 speed
back into it then maybe later (hopefully) stick a muncie in it. That is if I
can get my hands on one somewhere. I thought I read somewhere that the Muncie
and Saginaw are both a 1:1 final drive so hopefully what works good with the
Saginaw for a while will work just as good with the Muncie. I would like to be
able to run it down the interstate to work everyonce in a while but I also dont
want a pooch either. If I get the urge to smoke a tire or two I want to be
able to. Not that anybody here on the list knows what that is like!! I was
considering the ring and pinion install kit from Jegs with 3:31's. I think
that might get me about where I would like to be. Thanks EVERYBODY for all the
replies and opinions. This list has been a life saver.

Thanks again

Ryan

What size rear tires do you plan to run? What transmission?

Ryan, I'm running a 3.55 rear with a 700r4. Works real well with the OD. You
will not see a big difference between a 3.73 and 3.55. If you are running a non
OD trannie and highway driving is a major concern, consider a 3.08 or there
about. It would keep your 65 MPH R's below 3,000.

I tried the 3.55 in my 66 with 454 but with the richmond 5 speed I felt like
I was having to shift to soon. I'm now running 3.08's.

I guess the voice of reason should tell me that I
need to just bite the bullet and rebuild it.  Your rightbetter to do it
now while it is easy than have to do it later.

That's an Eaton carrier and I would at least put
new clutches and springs in it before I installed it. It would be a real
disappointment if you found you had to after you got it all set up. I don't know
of any way to test them out of the car.

The carrier that I am thinking about
rebuildingis an original GM 12 bolt posi.  I know they have rebuild kits
but I hate to do that if it is not necessary.

Ryan-
Mine is a bit worn and I did some checking into it recently and found that no
parts were available.  I had several places tell me that my only option is
to replace the unit.  I may shim mine up and calling it good enough.
There's really no way to tell if it's any good while it's on the bench.

I
recently purchased a used posi carrier.  It seems that all the guts are in
good shape.  However, before I install it in the rearend I was wondering
if there was some sort of a test I could do on it to check the clutches
etc   right now it is just the carrier no ring gear or anything
on it.  Any advice would be appreciated
