Re: [Chevelle-list] Cold primary on #8 :-(
Pelle, to check for an external vacuum leak use Carb cleaner and spray around the gasket between manifold and head. If you have an external leak the RPMs will increase. If you have an internal leak you may not notice anything. Internal leaks will have oil deposits on spark plugs and severe leak will show blue smoke out the tail pipe, if true dual exhaust the smoke will be out the pipe on the leaking bank. This leak will be from the intake gasket. Dual plane manifolds usually will pare off with 1 4 6 7 runners and 2 3 5 8 runners. 5 & 8 are the rear runners and if you have a vacuum leak at 8, 5 will have a somewhat lean mixture. 2 & 3 will be far enough from the leak that they will not be affected, as 5 would be. Re: [Chevelle-list] Cold primary on #8 :-(
The first thing I did when I noticed it was to hook up the strobe & it detects “pulse”. I also swapped the ignition wire & plug with #7, but no change” The spark plug isn’t exactly fouled but a tad darker than the other plugs, indicating that It fires but maybe not under the right condidions? I’ll do a comp test this weekend! BTW. Are the lifters mechanical or hydraulic on a 1971 402 2-bolt? Haven’t been that deep into the engine yet & I’m at work at the moment so I cannot check. I must admit, I was in Wichita Falls way back while I was at college at A&M. We had some seed production at Monday, TX and we would stop by and grab a bite to eat in Wichita. I graduated in 73, so you know it’s been some time! I am partial to the Upper Gulf Coast, and like to go to Houston for entertainment or shopping. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to live there, and since we have so much improvement on the Hi-ways…traffic can be horrible! I just like living on this river bottom. Don’t get me wrong. I'm still planning out what I want to do with it, and one of the things I'm considering is cold air induction. I'd like to do something like the Rudisill cowl plenum through the firewall so I don't have to get a new hood, but I don't like the looks of the duct hanging off the side. I'd rather go straight back from the air cleaner to the firewall using something like the Ramair box, which is an air cleaner with a 17" x 3" duct coming straight off the back. There doesn't appear to be much on the firewall directly behind the air cleaner on a 66 except the distributor and a wiring duct. However, when I looked at the center of the firewall on the 66, I noticed that the cowl space on the dash side doesn't have enough room for a 17" x 3" hole without cutting into the driving compartment. I certainly don't want my engine sucking air from there. When I look at the location of the sheet metal under the dash area that forms the bottom of the cowl area, it looks like it could be cut out and moved down to accommodate the 17" x 3" duct hole without interfering with the heating ducts or other under-dash items. But I can't be sure with the car torn apart. Interestingly, the offending sheet metal moves down as you move away from the center of the firewall, making room for a cowl duct on the right side of the car (where the Rudisill duct goes). So I'm looking for some opinions from the list, especially those that have a 66 Elky or Chevelle. 1) Is there some reason why you couldn't move the sheet metal that forms the bottom of the cowl area down to make room for a 17" x 3" hole through the firewall? (a structural reason, or interference with things in the dash area) 2) Is this too much trouble to keep the engine compartment clean and have cold air? The car is already torn apart, so now is the time to do it. I apologize if the explanation of the problem is not clear. Tom Tomlinson '71 Malibu '66 El Camino

Re:[Chevelle-list] Cold Air Induction on a 66
Hey Tom. I like your idea of keping things clean. I dont know much about moving that firewall metal around, but you could just make the hole of another shape. If what you need to get enough air is 17x3" (51sq.in. of area) you would have the same amount of air using a hole which is eg 20,5x2,5" or 25,5x2" I would not go very narrow (like 0,5" or 1") because there is something about the airflow along the wall etc. I'm not an expert but its for sure possible to read in a book somewhere. of course you would need to modify the duct as well, but that should not be a problem I think ??. I dont know if this is doable at all but you could always consider it. [Chevelle-list] Cold Air Induction on a 66
I've got a 66 El Camino that I bought in pieces (rolling chassis + parts) last year.
