Re: [Chevelle-list] crossmember for 70 ss auto.
You must have the wrong crossmember. They should line up metal to metal. --Original Message-- From: Amber Andre Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Chevelle List ReplyTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReplyTo: Chevelle List Sent: Aug 13, 2008 8:56 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] crossmember for 70 ss auto. the cross member that I have isn't long enough to go from the bolt holes on the right to bolt holes on the left.Is this correct?Or do the ends fit into a rubber pocket with a metal bracket on top? Re: [Chevelle-list] Crossmember
The location of the crossmember depends on what transmission you have. TH400's are longer, therefore the crossmember has to be further back. Also bear in mind that EC frames are different than 2 door coupes. The EC frame is boxed and is 4 inches longer in the middle than a 2 door. The bolts to go in, what you call upside down. Tom

I was reading through my restoration book tonight in the process of reinstalling my crossmember. The diagram in my book shows that for the two door coupe, the crossmember bolts to the front two holes in the frame not the back two that are used for elkys. It also looks like you install the bolts in "upside down" with lock washer, regular washer and then nut. I am just wanting to make sure that I am looking at the pics right. If someone can either confirm or correct me on this that would be great! Thanks Ryan A.C.E.S. #07184

When I converted my 65 from a 4 speed to a th 400 I just had to move the crossmember back a couple inches. Its been a long time but I do remember having to drill at least two of the four holes. Larry

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Tom, I believe you are correct about the crossmembers being interchangeable between the different transmissions for the '68 thru '72 Chevelles. But, he was referring to a '66 or '67. They are a "slightly different breed" when it comes to interchangeability of parts. This from a guy (ME !) that has never owned any other year than a 1968. Come to think of it, this is the only Chevelle I have ever owned. Proud owner since 1983. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List When I installed the TH400 in my 70, all I had to do is move the crossmember back to the next set of holes. They were predrilled in the frame from the factory. By the way it was an original TH350 car, but the guy I got it from had a 4 speed in it. All the crossmembers are the same Powerglide, TH350, TH400, and 4 speed. Tom - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [Chevelle-List] crossmember woes
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I thought the crossmember for the TH350 and TH400 were the same(?) So said the trans guy who replaced my old TH350 with a TH400. All he did was turn the crossmember around, and I think he even used the same mounting holes on the frame. I'm using a polyurethane safety-interlock trans mount, and it fits in there fine. > > If chevelles follow camaros, and I bet that they do , the x-members > are different. [Chevelle-List] crossmember woes
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List When I bought my 67, the guy had replaced the PG with a TH 350. I went to put my new TH 400 in today, and I have run into a problem I need some help on. There isn't enough room between the crossmember mounting surface and the mounting surface on the trans. to fit the trans. mount. I need about another 3/4 inch. The mount is a duplicate of the old one from a local trans supply house. If I jack the engine/trans higher it hits the shifter linkage where it comes out the floor. Are 350 crossmembers different than 400's? My only solution is to remove and reweld the crossmember mounting surface lower on the crossmember. Any ideas, suggestions would help.
