Well, I know the intake is gone. He says it now has
a 2 barrel on it. But I'm going to check it out. Stranger things have happened.
Who know why people do things? It may not be a 327/350. But it may turn out to
be something desireable.
Or a 327/210. We'll see.

Ifthe suffix codes arenot correct for your 66 (and,
since there were no L79s that I or anyone elsecan find), the date code
is a kind of a moot point isn't it? Not arguing, just asking
  g. Whether he "looked" up the numbers or not, I'd want to tear
the engine apart and find out what heads, what cam/lifters, etc. are
used. The 327/350 also probably had a different intake and carb than are
on it now - just guessing here. So to say it's a "350hp" engine is sort
of a guess. It's like all the LS-6 powered cars out there with different
cams, roller rockers, Edelbrock intakes and Edelbrock or Holley carbs,
etc. It may have about the same equipment as the LS6, but to say it is
  one is kind of fudging.

What I'm saying is, if it doesn't have the original (or GM
equivalent) parts in it and on it, it's not a 327/350 anymore. If it's
coded "HCH" it might be worth something to a Corvette or Impala guy to be
  "correct".

With an engine date of July 9, 1966, that's pretty late in the
model year - you must have a very late production 66.

I'm looking at a 327 engine to buy. The seller
says it's a 327/350. The block code is 3968174 and the heads are 3860462. I
can't find these numbers anywhere. The deck is stamped HCH. I can find HC but
not HCH. I haven't looked at the motor yet. This is info he gave me over the
phone. If it is a 327/350 it will be mine. He's asking $1500 or best. Can
anyone one help me with the casting numbers? Mfg date on it is 7/9/1966.
  Correct for my '66.
  Thanks

My Chevelle book shows the L79 350 hp available in
65 Chevelle then L79 325 hp available in 67 to 68 but not for 66.
I don't think the engine spec changed they just
lowered it to 325 hp so as not to compete with SS 396

I've heard of 65's with L79's but have never seen
one,Wayne. I've ridden in a Z16 Chevelle,before. Chevy made more than a few 66
Chevy II's with the 350hp L79 engine. I even owned one in 1974-75. However, 67
Chevy II's with the 325hp L79 engine are rare beyond belief. Have never seen or
heard of a documented car. I'm certainly no authority, though.

Sounds like one of those "what-if" cars,,like a 71
LS6. I always thought the highest hp 327 available in 1968 was 275hp. Corvettes
were available with 350hp 350's in 1968.

1965 was the glamor year for the L 79. it was the only year in the chevelle that a dual snorkel chrome air cleaner was offered. 65 also was unique as it is the only year L 79 was available with the SS package. you will find only Malibu (2 DR hardtops and posts) from 66-68 with the L 79. it is really hard to find much info after 65 because Super Sports seem to get most of the attention and research. i think the 66-68 L 79 basically was forgotten because of 396. the only difference between the 327 /365 (corvette) and the 327 /350 HP (chevelle -corvette) was the 365 HP had a solid lifter cam. the 365 HP (375 with injection) was only offered in the corvette. the L 79 was the largest HP small block ever offered in a chevelle (there is rumor that a 360 HP 327 was built at limited production in 64 but none have ever been proven to exist though there have been some clones built). by the way in 68 the L 79 was dropped to 325 HP.

Somewhere I too read that after 65 the HP on the L 79 was lowered to 325 HP but I couldn't find that info today. I did find that in 2 of 4 books that they don't show a L 79 in 1966 for CHEVELLES but two of my books do. the engine specs are the same for both 350 and 325 HP.
