You know, Herb, I think you described what I'm after,
a nice sound that I can live with in a daily driver.
--and sweetie won't object to riding in - ;)
This is a 283 and w/ 2 barrel and single exhaust and when it's time I'll go to a
factory style dual to complement the edelbrock intake and small four barrel.
Thanks.

2004-04-24 Thread Herb Lumpp
Hi Pete,

When I first put my Vette together, I used 2.5" Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers.
They sounded very good and had a nice rumble without sounding tinny but at
the time were too quiet for my taste. I ended up switching to a pair of two
chamber Flowmasters, which by the way, I getting tired of.

On the other hand, I have 3.5" in/3" out Spin Tech truck/rv mufflers on my
El Camino. Even though these mufflers are pretty loud, I love how my Elky
sounds.

Let's say you wanted the sound of an early 60's 327 w/ factory duals.
What would you use?
To my ears Flowmaster is out.
So are glass packs.
Maybe a pair of the quiet turbo mufflers you see in Summit or Jeg's?

heard it's not quite what I want.
Not a glass pack fan either.
My thinking is tainted by tinkering on inline sixes as there are some combinations on

Just a thought on mufflers...

In my distant youth, glass packs were all the rage. To my ear, the Super
Turbos on my C3 Vette have more the glass pack kind of sound than the
Flowmasters -- sort of warm and snappy. Flowmasters sound great, but they
have a colder, more hollow sound than the STs. More "high-tech," if you
will.

That said, Flowmasters on F*rd engines sound different to me than
Flowmasters on Chebbies. Could this be because of the different firing
order?

I have a Flowmaster 17120 system on my El Camino, and like it. I haven't had
a chance to do any side-by-side comparisons though because the car is not on
the road yet. I have the original 50 series mufflers (not the Delta Flows),
which are not as loud as the 30s.

Chad,

Flowmasters are not just for MustangsI have them on my Chevelle, and alot of my Chevy buddies have them on thier cars. Its like saying that K&N is only for Mustangs, or only for Chevelles. They are universalJust like tires.

He is definitly not looking for "loud"! He wants a nice rumble to it to
identify that its a muscle car at best and it needs to be quiet enough that
if you're on the highway, you can listen to the radio comfortly. Its
somewhat like - a nice idle, but when you jump on it, its gonna rumble.
BTW - Performace never hurts. Got anything in mind for that?

The one thing I was not considering is flowmasters. I thought they were
more of a strictly mustang type thing. The mustangs running around with the
flowmasters sound real good though. Like Adam W. said - dynomax, I was
really considering them, heard they are a good company. Whatcha think?

Are you after sound or performance? "Loud" doesn't always equal "good"...

A very popular setup is a 2.5" system with the x-style crossover and Dynomax Super
Turbo mufflers. Muffler testing by Jim and Tom Hand has shown that Pontiacs perform
extremely well with the Super Turbos. I can't answer your question about headers but

Flowmaster makes a nice kit for A bodies with 2.5 inch pipes and Flowmaster
30s. The sound is not quiet if that is what you are looking for. It has a
throaty idle and gets loud above 4000 RPM. Got mine on Summit Racing for
about $400 total.

Best practice is to "match" the pipe size with the volumetric efficiency of
the engine. But I think a 2.5 inch size with crossover would work great with
a chief 400 with street headers.

My dad has a 1969 GTO with a 400 that has a mild cam in it. Him and I were
wondering which kinds of headers and mufflers sound real good on that car?
