I had the same problem on my van last summer, I can bet a beer that it is the hei module, mine started, run really raw with loads of bing and bangs. I changed plugs and wires and cap and coil and everything except the module, when I finally changed the module I could put all the new parts back in the boxes and the car started as a new one. Herb, That is a good point; but don't stop there. About a week ago my wife and I drove the Vette to visit her sister. Round trip was about 260 miles. It ran just fine all the way there and all the way home. Once we were home, I pulled up to the driveway so my wife could move her truck out of the way (the Vette sleeps inside the garage). As she was getting out, the engine sputtered and died. I turned the key and it cranked a little longer than normal but finally started back up. It sounded a little rougher but it was running. I pulled it into the garage and shut it off. Yesterday I fiddled around with it and got it running by slowly moving the distributor until it fired. It seemed to be running ok, I even went and got gas. Sure enough, the movers show up this morning and I go to move the Vette and the damn thing won't start! It'll turn over forever but it just won't start. I pulled the #1 plug and checked my timing about a dozen times, I pulled the valve covers and the valve train appears to be working properly, I even went to Autozone and got another distributor just to see if that was the problem, no dice. This is really irritating considering it was running just fine before the little road trip! The only other thing I can think of is the ignition switch is bad. I installed a new one a few years back for some reason (I still have the original). Even if the ignition switch was bad that wouldn't explain why it died the way it did. Am I missing something? Any suggestions? Thanks guys (and gal)... cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES #3509http://web.tampabay.rr.com/herbsworld/index.htm

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Before you go crazy working on it, try a new set of spark plugs. It is inexpensive and I have seen that get many sick engines started. There can still be something wrong with it but new plugs sometimes gets them started so you can find the other problem. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [Chevelle-List] Ignition woes (Vette, kinda long)
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List If the timing chain moved, the engine will probably "sound" a little different while cranking it over. Also, from your sequence of events, it sounds like the car was idling (or at least low-speed/low-load) when it died. You didn't mention what kind of distributor you had. I had an incident a couple years ago with my HEI and an Accel Super Coil, which was less than a month old at the time. One of the coil's wire's insulation crumbled off inside the cap and it started grounding out internally. I was driving the car on a long-ish trip and during the drive back it started running poorly. I finally pulled off on the side of the road to check it out and it wouldn't fire again. (when I say running poorly, the engine was needing a full 1/4 throttle just to maintain 55 MPH on flat land). Swapping the coil fixed it. If you doubt the ignition switch, that should be easy enough to bypass with some aligator clips for testing purposes. Run power directly to the coil from the battery, and crank the engine over. Remember, the car was running fine right before things went south, so the likelihood that it's something major is low. Maybe it's also possible your mechanical pump just happened to die and that getting it to start while fiddling with the timing was a stroke of good luck? Ya gotta have fuel and spark, so I'd check those things first. -Dave, [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of 396guy Sent: Monday, February 18, 2002 9:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Ignition woes (Vette, kinda long) Timing chain slip maybe? Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Herb, what kind of shape is the coil in? Is it an HEI or points ignition? I had a coil go bad on my '72 Blazer and the major symptom was a weak spark - how does the spark look if you ground a plug to the intake? Brad O. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List It's getting spark and fuel, it just won't start. It's possible the timing chain jumped a tooth, but the engine has less than 5000 miles on it and I used a double row timing chain and gears so I want to check all other possibilities first. cYa- Herb Lumpp 1966 El Camino ACES #3509 http://web.tampabay.rr.com/herbsworld/index.htm - Original Message - From: "George Hernandez" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, February 18, 2002 8:00 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Ignition woes (Vette, kinda long) > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > Here's a couple you can look at. Spark-check the coil to spark plugs make sure you are getting a spark to the piston. Fuel-make sure you are getting fuel to the carb.
