Re: [Chevelle-list] OT - Used "new" car warranty

2006-05-04 Thread Doug Hart

Sorry, GM is 36 months or 36000 miles on
pickups for their manufacturer’s new car warranty on Chevrolets.  There
are some exceptions, emission systems in particular.

The
75k powertrain warranty is provided by Joe Gibb Performance above and beyond the
standard GM 36k warranty.  There's no charge for the JGP warranty because
it's part of the package when you buy one of their performance enhanced
trucks.

The
guy that bought my truck called and asked if I could sign a paper that would
transfer the warranty so I guess he and his dealer figured out what needed to be
done.

Herb,

If it were my truck, I would be calling GM direct and asking questions about
their warranty and get the absolute skinny on what to do and how to do it AND
who to report if someone is trying to rip somebody off.

I don't mean you, I mean the guy who owns the truck!! It's his problem after
all, right?

Ok, I got three replies (all pasted below), two of which talk about a
transfer fee, and one says the warranty stays with the vehicle provided it
has less than 36k miles. My, or I should say "his" truck has a little over
27k miles, so the warranty should still be valid, not even counting the 75k
powertrain warranty provided by Joe Gibb Performance.

Maybe the fee/no fee is dealer or state specific? Either way, thanks for
the info, I'll wait to see if the guy calls me back.

Not much help but here are a couple ideas
On our 04 Malibu Maxx the dealer set up the paperwork for us. We had
to pay a fee to have the warranty transferred.

On my Silverado GM sent me paperwork to BUY extended warranty plans.
I would contact the dealer to get the contact info for the warranty
transfer folks.

I am a General Motors dealer. The new car warranty should last 36 months or
36,000 miles whichever happens first. If either of these has been reached
then in theory the new car warranty is over. If neither has been reached
then the warranty is in effect. The new owner has no responsibility for
transferring the warranty. The warranty stays with the vehicle.

The new owner needs to do the transfer of warranty. There will be a charge
to him for this process.

The old owner only needs to provide the information about the warranty for
the new owner.

It's not a problem and the new owner should have done the transfer at the
time the vehicle was presented at the dealership. They should have guided
him in the transfer. Not sure why they didn't unless the new owner expects
you to pay for transfer!

This has been done at my dealership with no problem and the warranty was
performed and new owner sent on his way.
