I also cut the line above the intake added a sort run of rubber an inline 
filter and then another short run of rubber to the split for the double pumper. 
I blew the line off the steel after sitting over the winter. To solve this I 
used a flare tool to put a small swell on the end of the steel lines,

I ran into the same problem with my smallblock 69.  I also have an Edlebrock 
carb. and what I did was cut the one end off at the height of the intake 
manifold.  I ran 3/8ths braided fuel line hose from there to the fuel filter 
which fits in a bracket that mounts on the carb. base ( homemade).  From there 
I ran an other piece of  3/8ths braided fuel line to the banjo fitting on the 
side of the carb.  I have had no problems with either the steel fuel line 
coming loose or any leakage to date.  When you take the old fuel line off of 
the fuel pump you will have some fuel run out of the pump, but it shouldn't be 
any large amount. I usually use my oil change pan with good results in 
situations like this.

I have a '71 Malibu 350 with a stock fuel pump and Edelbrock carb. I 
need to replace the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb. I've been 
told that that line should be steel, especially the part the runs behind 
the alternator/fan. I bought a stock, pre-bent, steel  fuel line, but of 
course it does not fit correctly to the Edelbrock carb. I'd like to 
install the steel fuel line to the fuel pump, cut the nut off the end

Don't worry about it. Mine has been that way for years. I did have to  
buy a banjo fitting for the carb, but you don't need anything to  
support the fuel line. Just make the steel part of the line taller  
than the manifold so that the rubber part doesn't end up lying on the  
engine (friction  heat).
